Betrayed Conservatives
Logic Times ^ | 04-29-06 | Dan Hallagan

The Left’s hatred of George W. Bush has no rival...

...or so it once seemed. But not so fast. There is a new breed of GWB hater: the Betrayed Conservative, a creature of surprisingly intense emotions for a member of the rational Right. The Betrayed Conservative is good news and bad news for the conservative movement. The good news is that there are vocal, passionate conservatives out there – large numbers of them – unwilling to accept anything less than sound conservative policy out of Washington. They are angry and active and have imposed some measure of discipline on that exasperating collection of spineless Republicans in the nation’s capital. At the drop of a bad Supreme Court nominee or immigration bill, the Betrayed Conservative explodes with the sort of colorful epithets that would make Al Franken blush. And make no mistake, Bush is their whipping boy, and they rarely stop at forty lashes.

The bad news is that Betrayed Conservatives are a political disaster. Betrayal involves a breach of confidence, but in the history of American conservative politics there has never been any confidence to breach, never been a reliable tradition of conservative policy in Washington implemented by principled public servants. Such animals have rarely walked the halls of the Capitol Building, and when they appear, they are hunted down by both the rabid Left and vacillating Right with the viciousness of ritual murder. Such creatures of principle – Newt Gingrich for example – threaten all pure politicians.

The RINO"s will not do the correct thing, and somehow it's my fault?

Don't abandon taxes, abortion, guns, etc.. No offense, but it is foolish to be a one-issue voter.

If many of the 'conservatives' in government, and many private citizens who consider themselves conservatives have been educated by the public school system, then it's not surprising that some of what they've learned influences their thinking.

For example, how many people are genuinely aware of the impact that "social constructionism" has had on divorcing public policy from reality? If one doesn't understand it, it's difficult to combat the effects of it.

So the long and short of it is, I agree!

Yes - I agree. Chances a Dem would hear a Repub or Conservative POV is prolly close to nil. We have a better chance with those of our own "flock", but when they prove themselves a weasel-wuss, it's time to throw them out.

"I'll never be able to understand the mindset of someone who would actually vote on something as important as who will become our President, on one, single, pet issue."

I don't guess the invasion has made it to Alaska yet, but don't worry it will before long. Then you will understand.

The most disastrous thing for conservatives is for the most part they not get involved with the efforts needed to convince a majority of the voters to their positions. They have no sales skills and refuse to learn them. They spout their ideological positions which centrists reject. Then after massive defeats they console themselves by thinking the problem was their failure to get their message out.

You are an island of sanity in a sea of hyenic barking.

Inevitably, in my 54 years, I've noticed that those who insist on all or nothing usually get nothing.

Logic Times? No signs of logic evident to me.

For starters, few conservatives are GWB haters. This seems to be the typical projection that liberals use. Some conservatives see GWB as being faithful to his less than conservative political philosophy, similar to his fathers. Many conservatives are disappointed in GWB when he takes positions that are not only not conservative but are against the beliefs of most Americans, conservatives and moderates, such as his position on the invasion of illegal aliens. Neither of these groups hate the President. This is something that liberals, and some FReepers, do not seem able to understand. True conservatives are guided by their beliefs and intellect, not their feelings. They do not hate everyone that they may fight against.

The central premise of this liberal screed appears to be that there is a group of "betrayed conservatives" who emotionally destroy other "less than pure conservatives". This is ludicrous. Conservatives I know supported Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay when they supported conservative issues. Liberals, including the MSM and squishy Republicans, are the groups who wanted to destroy these conservatives and the record of this is obvious for anyone with eyes.

The tone of this article is similar to many posts I have seen on FR i.e. anyone not agreeing with the President or the latest RNC position is a "basher" or "hater" and is only aiding "Hillary" or the Democrats in their quest to get into office and destroy the Country. I have often wondered if these posts are from liberals who want to pit all non-liberals against each other. It seems that these posts are often emotional and "shrill", another projection this article uses. Even when conservative posters are logical, factual and respectful, they are called names and accused of all sort of heinous behavior. This definitely has the stench of emotional liberalism.
This article, and similar posts, never seem to have any solution other than keep voting for the Republicans who have proven they are against conservative principles. They never explain how this could possibly help get the Country back on track, but only "scream" that to do otherwise is to betray Republicans and insure total destruction by the Democrats. Fear-mongering, another liberal tactic.

Although I have often responded to these type of posts, maybe I am just being gamed. Maybe, like the author of this article, liberals are just trying to get us to buy into their alternative universe where logic is emotion, principles are naive foolishness and conservatives are the problem.
I think I will be more selective in who I post to,....nah, that would away take too much of the fun!

The purists' hatred for Bush could kill the conservative movement...and put 'rats in power for a generation.

Nah, the illegal amnesty program will take care of that handily without Conservatives' help.

President Bush isn't running for any office.

It IS Time for conservatives to act up or we're gonna end up with President McCain, and that worries me more than Nancy Pelosi.

Conservative have LOTS of good reasons to be unhappy with the Bush Administration -- And the main one is that they seem to have lost their focus. Furthermore, not a week goes by that they don't make another silly mis-step.

Ditto. Secure the borders then we can get back to fighting over other issues. Leave them open and we won't even have a country anymore in which to have a political fight.

Those so worried about Conservatives abandoning RINO's and "R's" losing "control" ought to busy themselves by pushing, pulling, or slapping those RINO "lawmakers" into shape for more conservative principles.

Yep. Because of these people we may get Speaker Pelosi

No, not because of "these" people we will get Speaker Pelosi. We will likely get that dried up c**t because our Republican'ts have failed us. Including Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus (now pronounced "hay-zoos") W. Bush, the false prophet.

The only way to restore true conservatism to the Republican Party is thrugh attrition, and you can't have attrition without holding office. We were out of power for a long time. We have gotten many things we wanted. I know there is a long way to go, and the way to get there is by conditioning the country to ever-increasing modalities of conservatism based on solid American values, traditions, and constitutional principles. In a country where American history and the constitution are no longer taught in school, surely you can see that this restoration process will take a generation or more. We didn't get to the situation we are in overnight. It took about forty years. It will take almost that long to undo it, and we can't do that if we're out of power. No, the answer is to elect slightly ever-increasingly conservative candidates and take all steps possible to help them succeed. Then, if they don't play ball, we replace them with somebody more conservative. But meanwhile, we also have to elect candidates with highly sophisticated political skills who can teach and lead the American people to that shining city on the hill by making them WANT the peace, prosperity and civility that goes hand-in-hand with conservatism. That is what will bring Republican power to our legislative bodies. When the people like, trust and follow the nation's leader, that leader can usher in his own party to greater power via his shirttail. We have never had a good enough grip on the senate after winning it back in '94 to accomplish what needs to be done to continue the conservative revolution. The leadership there has been weak and contrary all along.

Yes, we can certainly "clean house" but I hope and pray we can do it without tearing the house down.

I think a great idea for securing the border which would resonate with the public is to create a volunteer border guard just as we created a volunteer armed forces. You could raise a large force fast because a lot of patriotic Americans believe this to be the proper cause.

Where did I ever use the word "pet issue".

I simply said it is mind boggling that some on the right (obviously you) simply cannot give an inch in understand that good people can come to differing ideas on what are the best solutions to this complex, 40 year in the making problem.

Furthermore to revert back to the Roman empire as an excuse to neither admit the above....or to clear one's conscience for helping put the ilk of what is the Democrat party today into the majority of Congress ...is simply not a good enough excuse (furthermore Roman had a whole list of reasons it fell outside of poor immigration policies)

The reality is there are times (plenty of times) in history when it is fine to step away from one's political party....this is simply not one of those times. We are in the middle of a world war! (that too many American's want to ignore)....we have a major opposition party (Democrats today) like we have never had in history. A party that is completely anti-American, anti-American success and obsessed with power.

Lastly our soldiers deserve better then to have this anti-American party become a majority back home while they are off fighting.
