Betrayed Conservatives
Logic Times ^ | 04-29-06 | Dan Hallagan

The Left’s hatred of George W. Bush has no rival...

...or so it once seemed. But not so fast. There is a new breed of GWB hater: the Betrayed Conservative, a creature of surprisingly intense emotions for a member of the rational Right. The Betrayed Conservative is good news and bad news for the conservative movement. The good news is that there are vocal, passionate conservatives out there – large numbers of them – unwilling to accept anything less than sound conservative policy out of Washington. They are angry and active and have imposed some measure of discipline on that exasperating collection of spineless Republicans in the nation’s capital. At the drop of a bad Supreme Court nominee or immigration bill, the Betrayed Conservative explodes with the sort of colorful epithets that would make Al Franken blush. And make no mistake, Bush is their whipping boy, and they rarely stop at forty lashes.

The bad news is that Betrayed Conservatives are a political disaster. Betrayal involves a breach of confidence, but in the history of American conservative politics there has never been any confidence to breach, never been a reliable tradition of conservative policy in Washington implemented by principled public servants. Such animals have rarely walked the halls of the Capitol Building, and when they appear, they are hunted down by both the rabid Left and vacillating Right with the viciousness of ritual murder. Such creatures of principle – Newt Gingrich for example – threaten all pure politicians.

---The only offices you will "REPO" with this strategy are conservative seats. The so-called RINO's will sail to re-election.---

How do you figure?

So, let me get this straight.

Conservatives elect leaders, expecting them to fulfill their promises to affect conservative governance.

Said leaders then signally fail to affect that program, making their constituency angry.

But when said betrayal leads to political instability, the fault is found with the betrayed parties.

Have I got it about right?

"Yes, the President made a comment about not wanting vilantes, and that made perfect sense to me."

That made perfect sense to you? How, pray tell can that be. You contradict this comment with your praise of the Minutemen in your own post. I'm one of those one issue voters as of today. I've had it. Just sent this e-mail in reply to one from the RNC:

Pubs are going to lose in the mid-terms and perhaps in 2008 because of their own stupidity. The immigration issue is of top importance to the Republican base, but our elitist Pubs (mostly in the Senate) continue to push for a "guest worker" program (amnesty) when almost their entire base, and about 70% of the U.S. population at large, are against this, and are instead for strict border enforcement. I am a conservative Pub, who when younger actively worked in the Party as a precinct committeeman and election judge, to elect good conservative candidates, but I am at my rope's end with disgust at our Party over the immigration fiasco. The timing of bringing this immigration issue up right before the mid-term elections is suicidal to our party, and the illegal immigrant marches are turning ever more people against the demands of these illegals; I for one, am one of these people. I will vote for any presidential candidate in the 2008 election that is pro strict border enforcement only. I have just become a one issue voter, something I have never done before, but that is how important this is to me. I've had it with our porous borders where any terrorist can just stroll across it, and at our lawmakers who have consistently done nothing over the years, each side (Dem/Pub) for its own vested political interests. Meanwhile you politicians totally disregard that which is in the best interest of our country itself. With few exceptions, mostly the good guys in the House, although some of them could turn on us at any moment too, all politicians disgust me, and that includes our RINO, spineless Pubs in the Senate. I would no more contribute either by volunteering or with money right now to the Pub Party than I would vote for any Pub that is pro-amnesty. And don't tell me that bull about "it isn't amnesty" when it is. The illegals go to the back of the line my foot. Others who are legally attempting to enter our country have to wait IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY until they get their visas to come here. These illegals currently in our country GET TO WAIT RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD OLD SUCKER USA while waiting to get their inevitable permanent visa's. That ain't amnesty, buddies. Plus the billions we are spending on coddling these illegal aliens w/welfare and education benefits makes me sick. If you want to know why Presidente Jorge Bush's poll numbers are so low right now it is because he is losing his conservative Pub base bigtime. And, if you, Ken Mehlman, as leader of the RNC can't see this, then you are in the wrong job position. You wanted to hear from me, you have. My whole family, my friends, we all feel the same way and my friends' friends do too, from what they tell me. Multiply that out and you've got real problems, right here in River City. Wise up, RNC. You are losing your base.

don't let this one issue ruin the GOP for you.. I spoke at length a year and a half ago with both McConnell and Lewis (senator and congressmen from KY), who both have the President's ear..

things are in the works behind the scenes we don't know about. I don't even know all the details, but neither did they have all the details, or were not willing to give them out, but there are things being worked out that will solve all our (illegal imigrant) problems, answer everyone's demands.. we have to trust the President.

OH good. Then perhaps you'll tell us which of the conservatives you've been paid to work for have been elected?

The so-called RINO's will sail to re-election.

Ohio Republican primary for Senate.

RINO DeWine - 74%

Conservative challenger Pierce - 14%

IT's easy. Look at the map. The Rinos as you call them are clustered in the upper Midwest, west and east. There is NO WAY to unseat them in the primaries since those RINO's are as conservative as the left of center voters in those parts of the country will vote for, they sure as heck will not throw out Snowe to elect a Gingrich. So either we get Snowe or we get the democrat and that will hold true for the others. The only areas that the Dems have a real shot at gains are in the weaker red states. Probably Florida and some of the Southwestern states. If they can get all of the spiiting mad conservatives to sit at home or vote 3rd party they can knock off some of those non-rino seats by attrition. Hey knock yourself out and teach Bush and the GOP a lesson but, as I said, this country and it's demographic markup is not about to undergo a great conservative revival in 2008 because by that time we will be seeing the greatest demand for big government in our history.

"The purists' hatred for Bush could kill the conservative movement...and put 'rats in power for a generation."

I couldn't agree more. The paragraph below, well explains it:

"Here is where the naiveté of the Betrayed Conservative clumsily intervenes and, like a large, witless boy in a brawl, head down and arms swinging wildly, strikes friend and foe alike. By adding their shrill voice to the debate, the first accomplishment of the Betrayed Conservative is to immolate all Republicans, paradoxically jeopardizing the opportunity for conservative government because of their exasperation with liberal government. I have yet to witness a Betrayed Conservative differentiate between a solid Republican conservative fighting the good fight and a crying, squishy waste of life like George Voinovich. In letting emotion rule the day and failing to make distinctions, the Betrayed Conservative functions more like a typical liberal and, at the same time, serves them very well indeed."

He NAILS it. Simply a BRILLIANT article.

Why? Would that give you a reason to support elected leaders who continuously refuse to implement conservative policy?

This article is offensive BS, no matter how many elections I win or lose.

It's the attitude displayed by this piece that will destroy the GOP coalition faster than anything.

It's this attitude which has led us to this place of conservative dissatisfaction with its leaders.

What "is simply wrong" is not enforcing the law. Putting political exprediency above honoring the oath of office. You better take your hectoring to the leadership of the GOP before they assure their own destruction. What part of "illegal" doesn't register with you? Eisenhower was able to understand and act on it- too bad we have no men of his caliber left in this sadly diminished GOP.

My point is that there is nothing new under the sun. There are people like you, EV, who have been the "betrayed conservative" since President Bush was in the primaries.

There are "betrayed conservatives" who never win elections, and I think have been hoping to destroy the "GOP coalition" as you describe it.

This doens't look new to me. It looks like the same old song I've heard from the same quarters since 2000.

Fine, carry on if you think alternating between ignoring and insulting the conservative base of the GOP is such a grand longterm winning plan.

"The margin of victory for Republicans is coming more and more from those to the left of center. So that is where many Republicans including George Bush are moving."
At what point then is there no distinction between republican and democrat other than the name. ?
By Bush moving left all he does is keep all those who hate him still hating him and gathers MORE hatred from those conservative who helped get him in there and once supported him ..He accomplishes nothing and damages the party to boot.

If you think that you represent the "base" I would again point you toward your margin of victory. Tator's post really cuts you because it's so true. Political victories aren't all or nothing. They are marginal.

The fact that you can't see any progress speaks volumes.

Hogwash. Ike didn't have 50 years of civil rights legislation and Supreme Court law to stop him in his tracks. If you believe that some president known or unknown is going build your wall and round all of the illegals up ala Operation Wetback you are not even close to living in the real world. The demographic fact is that we are about to see the taxpayer vs tax recipient pyramid invert for the first time in our history with the retirement of the boomers. That is what is making the illegal immigration issue so tough. For good or ill taxpayers are going to have to be created and our birth rates are not sufficient to do it. You can cry principle all you want but the fact is that voters vote their self interests and small government is not in the interests of those that will be depending on it for all or part of their retirement income and most of their medical costs. Keep dreaming of the 1950's because it is going to get a lot worse.
