A passenger airplane flying from Armenia's capital, Yerevan, to the city of Sochi in southern Russia has crashed over the Black Sea, officials say.

The Airbus 320 plane from Armenian Airlines was carrying about 100 people, when it disappeared from radar screens about 0215 (2215GMT Tuesday).

Debris has been seen in the sea, about 6km (four miles) from the coast, says Russia's Emergencies Ministry.

News reports like this tend to get details wrong early on.

You're certainly right about that.

Here's an excerpt from the CNN.com article of October 4, 2001... (and you are correct - it was a Russian airliner flying out of Israel)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Knowledgeable U.S. officials said they have evidence the Russian airliner that crashed Thursday into the Black Sea was shot down by a Ukrainian surface-to-air missile fired during military exercises.

"We believe this was a tragic accident caused by a military exercise gone awry," said a US official.

The Sibir Airlines Tu-154 with 77 people aboard was en route from Israel to Siberia.

U.S. officials said the plane was downed by an SA-5 surface-to-air missile fired from a shore battery during the largest scale Ukrainian military exercises in some years.

The plane started its journey in Tel Aviv, Israel, bound for Novisibersk, Russia. Officials in Israel and Russia said they feared the crash could have been caused by terrorists. An Armenian pilot flying in the vicinity said he saw the plane explode in midair.

From the Airliners.net forum just now...

It is confirmed crashed... wreckage found.. doesn't look good...

-Wreckage from the plane was found not far from the shoreline, Beltsov said.

-He said preliminary information indicated there were 114 people aboard.

-Rescuers found parts of the plane about four miles from the shore, along with empty lifejackets — an indication that passengers had no time to put them on

And a bit more...

The rescuers were working in a driving rain, Russian news agencies reported, and Beltsov said weather conditions were poor at the time the plane went down.

It was an excerpt - the full article was rather lengthy. Thanks for your guidance.

SAD the stupid thread about a plane with a tire blown had a HUGE number of people posting. A plane crashes and kills 100 people and you can hear the crickets in here.

Drama anyone?

It's all about the video. If there isn't good video then it didn't (or isn't) happening as far as MSM is concerned. And all too often, even FReepers fall into letting the MSM define the news.

It also is because where the crash occurred. Crashes outside Western Europe, parts of Asia, or the United States don't get a lot of attention.
