Rep. Tom Tancredo: Boycott is a Bust
NewsMax ^ | 2 May 2006

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., a longtime opponent of illegal immigration, says the May 1 Latino worker boycott is "a bust” when it comes to changing public opinion in America.

Tancredo, appearing on Fox News Channel, said the waving of Mexican flags, the chanting of "Today We March, Tomorrow We Vote,” and the in-your-face flaunting of U.S. immigration law will not win many converts outside of large Latino strongholds.

"When the average American looks out on the streets and sees people demanding ‘rights’ ... even though the protesters illegally snuck into our country, it doesn’t play well in Peoria,” Tancredo said. "I don’t think it’s working in favor of the illegals, but I hope they keep it up.”

Tancredo said Americans who may have initially been sympathetic to the plight of families who genuinely wish to come to America by legal means will be turned off by the antics of illegal alien protesters.

"I think some of my [congressional] colleagues in New York and California may be influenced by them, but generally speaking, most of the people I talk to say ‘don’t give in to them; don’t give in to the mobs,’” Tancredo said.

The congressman said most of the e-mails and phone calls he receives from constituents say he and his fellow congressmen should not "give them anything close to amnesty.” Most, he said, have asked Tancredo to persuade the House of Representatives and Senate to stick to the House bill and stricter enforcement of the U.S. borders.

Booyah! Tancredo nails it. More rope! Give them more rope!

Unfortunately it matters not what we think/do, it matters what the politicians think/do. Apparently they go and do whatever they want in spite of who elected them.

This is the issue of the next two elections

Wanna bet? Illegal immigration won't even be THE issue for 2006.

Gas prices are the number one concern today. Immigration is third on the list, but it's way behind gas prices and the economy.

It's easy to get the wrong idea because practically everybody has switched from flout to flaunt, including professional writers who are supposed to set a better example. It's like a lost cause.

There was a thread about this issue last week. It said he would not run as a third-party candidate.

One poll said the issue most important to Americans is gasoline--terrorism and illegals were down on the list.

Same observation here. I made it a point to run errands/spend money today, and there were plenty of Hispanic shoppers out.

Somebody ought to publish a listing prior to this fall's elections, a website perhaps (or does one exist), with all the candidates positions on the border issue.

In most parts of the country, outside of certain deep-blue jurisdictions, the appearance of these semi-militant marches leaves the impression that the protestors have successfully "jumped the shark". They certainly looked like a bunch of loons from this middle-southern perspective.

Basically he made a comment and introduced resolutions saying that no aid what so ever should be given to Louisiana because the govt was so awful. Fair enough. But after his few days of interviews he never interacted with even the Louisiana Republicans to find another solution. In fact he pretty much quit talking about it and we were off his radar screen. I thought that was not very "Presidential" like.

I don't think the boycott was a bust.

I think it helped turn opinions against the illegal aliens (AKA undocumented workers, immigrants).

Ah, hahaha, listen to this...

I just called Papa John's, they answered and I said: "I'm thinking about ordering a pizza, do you have or support illegal aliens there...?"

Young gringo girl said "ah, no".

I said "Ok, I'll order a Pizza then".

She was speechless the whole time until she said the amount and was stunned after that...

HE HE HE HE HE HE

If Tom runs in 08 this is really going to get interesting. I just hope it does not put Hillary in the White House. Tom expresses what I feel.

No kidding. If he gets the nomination, we might have a nominee worth voting for.

You know, I'd always thought Tancredo was a bit of a wingnut.

But sometimes, a wingnut is precisely what we need.

"Representative Tancredo is a great example of the party values we need to return to. I hope he throws his hat into the ring in 2008."

Yeah, and if he is snubbed by the GOP I hope to heck he runs as an INDEPENDENT.

And please, nobody reply to my post with the "throwing your vote away" crap. It seems we've thrown our votes away on the GOP for years. (I've vote Republican since I voted for Nixon in l968.) We've had control of both Houses of Congress forever and for the last five years, both Houses and the White House. And, what in the heck have we gotten for it except two Conservative Supreme Court Justices; which is a big plus?

Lots of folks in 1992 said the same thing about Perot, and we got Hillary's hubby.

Bush said he would continue the Reagan revolution, he didn't, else he would have got re-elected.
