The Washington Times ^ | 5/1/2006 | Patrice Hill

Immigrant labor -- both legal and illegal -- has been an important force propelling U.S. economic growth for years.

Growth in the native population has been in decline since the 1970s, so immigrant workers have filled in, providing half of the growth in the U.S. labor force since 1990.

Utterly rediculous of the Washington Times to suddenly give the "other" side of the story prominent front-page coverage—PARTICULARLY on the day of their protest?

I mean, what were they thinking? That suddenly they'd get a bunch of non-English-speaking yahoos to buy a copy?

Immigrant workers, like all American workers, not only contribute their labor but further propel growth

Once again completely band utterly missing the point (or, more likely, ignoring it). It's not, and never has been, about immigration, it's about ILLEGAL immigration!

"While the role of immigrants in the U.S. economy already is substantial, it promises to be even more important in the future as baby boomers retire and the number of American workers shrinks more rapidly."

While this is a no-brainer, it does not address the problem of illegal immigration undermining the rule of law. We can streamline the legal process to make legal immigration smoother for those who play by the rules and want to access opportunity. That being said, we still need to crack down on illegal immigration.

I completely agree. Immigrants to propel the economy. My grandparents and my mother are immigrants from Malta who came here and did pretty well....LEGALLLY.

Apparently the MSM has no concept of the word ILLEGAL though and cannot possibly see, in their small, biased "minds", how criminals are a detriment to our nation.

Of course they are causing "growth" in the labor force. They work for half pay in cash! These are not jobs that were created, they were downgraded.

"Periods of high immigration have been associated with periods of high economic growth in the United States."

This statement reverses cause and effect.

"Growth in the native population has been in decline since the 1970s"

I am getting really sick of hearing this as a justification for illegal immigration. If the native population has declined, abortion has to be a factor. So in effect, illegal immigrants replace our own aborted children. That's both stupid and immoral.

I would agree, but most on this forum would not. Most on this forum don't want to acknowledge the positives that all immigrants provide to our economy. We need an immigration policy that weeds out the criminals and leeches, and allows a larger number of immigrants who want to work to come here legally. 40 million abortions has not help America's demographics.

It certainly does.

If a large pool of poor, uneducated workers was the key to economic success, then Mexico, Bangladesh, Sudan, et al would be economic super-powers.

Innovation is what fuels economic growth and cheap labor delays innovation.

"How Immigrants Make the Economy Grow"

For some reason that article heading reminds me of something called "the mushroom treatment":
citizens, native-born and naturalized, like mushrooms should be kept in the dark and fed s***.

"Nothing Gringo Day." Incredible . . . .

Given how textile plants , meat processing plants , and other employers have happily replaced thousands of native workers with imported workers, legal and otherwise, I am inclined to think that abortion is a very small factor in the "need" for illegal aliens. It's not a lack of native workers, it's a desire to avoid payroll taxes ,to pay lower wages, and maybe to regulations such as OSHA's covering employees.

Why do liberals think population growth is bad UNLESS it is for OTHER people, ie. illegal immigrants?
