Web-posted Apr. 29, 12:40: PM Rally to advocate positive immigration reform By Pablo Candia Dodge City Daily Globe

Dodge City’s Latino community will participate in a two-day event Sunday and Monday to advocate positive immigration reform and defend immigrant worker rights.

The first part of the event has been named "A Day of Unity" and will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday, and "A Day of Action” will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday. The Regional Latino Affairs Council of Southwest Kansas will promote these activities in Wright Park.

Organizers said they want to have a positive movement without attitudes that might be interpreted as confrontational.

"Sunday, April 30, will provide an opportunity for us to unite without having to worry about how it will affect our jobs, our paychecks, or our children’s education,” said a press release from the council. “We want to show our actions are aimed at legislators and not our people, community, businesses, school system or local economy.”

On Sunday, participants in the Wright Park event will receive updated information on the immigration reform bill that is being debated in the U.S. Senate. Also they will receive educational information on how the process to get citizenship works and how to participate more in the community.

A history of immigrants and three testimonials from Latinos in the process of legalization will also be offered. Two musical groups, "Decision" and "Diferencia," will contribute to celebrate the event.

Monday’s “Day of Action” is intended to encourage Latino immigrants to become more involved with the community by doing volunteer work.

Organizers said they are encouraging Latinos to go to work and send their children to school on Monday under the slogan "Positive action for positive change." They said Monday’s activities will be mostly for those Latino workers who have permission of their employers to take Monday off. Cargill Meat Solutions and National Beef will both close for Monday’s rally.

The activity will start with a tree dedication in Wright Park to symbolize that Latino immigrants also have their roots in southwest Kansas. Afterwards, the participants will be organized into groups to do volunteer work at parks, hospital, nursing homes and help the elderly, schools and the local Mexican American Ministries office. Organizers are encouraging Latino immigrants to wear white shirts during the events and carry American flags to show peace and unity, and to let others know they are also part of America.

The two-day activities, organizers said, are not exclusively for Latino immigrants, and the whole community is invited. Participants are encouraged to take lunches with them for Monday’s activity.

According to the organizers, CBS Evening News staff phoned them to indicate an interest in coming to Dodge City to cover the events.

No one is organizing those who would be the the counter protesters. The Lefist anti-American organizers are focused on using and inciting Mexicans in any way they can to weaken the U.S.

ICE should set up checkpoints at the entrance to the parking lots of these plants early Tuesday morning with no advance notice.

hehe, when I worked there in the 90s La Migra would call a month ahead to let us know when they would be in town.

On the day of the check, a few feds would drink coffee with management while half the plant called in sick...this is just a big silly game.

I used to work in Dodge City, actually an 8 county area centered on Ford County. At the time a lot of the workers were Vietnamese or Cambodian. Lots of Mexicans too, also quite a few regular Americans.

Dodge wasn't that bad back then but clearly was a worse place to live than Garden City which also had a large meat packing plant.

I recall a former Dodge resident posted on this site that Dodge had passed what he called the "tipping point". Basically said it had gone too far to save.

I used to live in Wichita. Moved to Haysville, just (literally) down the street. My old neighborhood in Wichita is currently being taken over by Mexicans. When I moved in 10 years ago, enrollment at my children's school was 78% White, 12% Black, 5% Asian, 3% Latino and 2% Other. When we moved out last year, it was 49% White, 35% Latino, 10% Black, 4% Asian and 2% Other. (I got these stats off our school district's website) I am sure it is higher for Latino's this year. Mexicans are displacing all races at a quick rate, not just Whites. When we moved onto my block, there was one hispanic family, and they were assimilated. (They spoke perfect English and Heck, THEIR KIDS EVEN WENT TO PRIVATE SCHOOL!) When we sold our house (To a Mexican family that didn't even speak English!) Our block was over 1/2 Latino. This was becoming true for the entire neighborhood. I moved because I was worried my home value would go down in coming years. Got out while I could. Moved to Haysville. I am not a bigot, but these people moving in did not speak English nor did they share the same culture. Glad I live in a neighborhood now where that is no longer the case. Coincidentally, the school district here is 95% White and that includes the fact that some students that go to school here actually live in the Wichita city limits.

More likely didn't want to draw attention to themselves by trying to operate with just 10% of their workforce showing up.

I'm speechless after reading your post. It's obvious I'm ignorant of the massive influx of Mexicans to Kansas since I lived out of state for so long. Now I'm back and I'm shocked. I know they amass in all the states just to grow but I wasn't aware of the quantity here.

Dodge is a done deal...The flight of the middle class over the last decade is astounding, and I can't say I blame them.

When the taxes of the few go to support the many, the few with the money and brains to escape usually do.

It's a perfect storm.
Many blue collar industries, places that built farm implements, etc. either went under or moved out of the region in the last decade.(Many, coincidently, to Mexico)

Those jobs that have remained in SW Kansas are showing wage deflation, as there is always an illegal willing to work for less in Dodge City, be it construction, transport, factory work.
Guys who once supported a family on 40,000 are now told to make do with 29,000. If they can find a job...
Meanwhile their taxes for the new schools and hospitals and jails to support the "immigrants" keep going up.

Now add in the fact that young people are forced to flee to the cities because the small towns and rural areas have no jobs. To keep what few jobs remain the local gov't cuts sweetheart deals with the big meat plants to keep them in the city.

Then combine the fact that family farmers are in no position to compete with the Agribusiness giants, the big corporations who get the bulk of the benefit of public assistance and subsidies.

Meanwhile taxes and government regulations stifle the small businessman in the small Kansas town. That, combined with the growth and power of National chain stores has served to deplete the region of local stores and shops from clothes to auto repair.

In the end you have a town full of illegals who send their kids to public school and the emergency room. The streets and bridges are crumbling, the jails are full, and no one in court "halba ingles", while the cops are grossly understaffed.

This is all paid for by the few saps lucky enough to still have a job at Wal-Mart...hehe.

"I am not a bigot . . . "

Never apologize for what you are not. You will not deflect calumny, and your denial merely lends currency to undeserved slander. Sincerity makes no impression on bad intentions.

I did some work in a meat processing plant in rural America recently. In a town of 3500 people, there was a plant that employed 1500 workers (most immigrants). The plant was understaffed but couldn't hire any more because the town was at it's effective carrying-capacity of immigrants. There was an identical plant, from the same company, 6 miles down the road in the next town of 3500 with the same issues.....and another one 20 miles away.

I worked in a poultry plant in the 1970's. At that time 75% of the employees were black. I watched the place empty out the other day, and didn't see anything but Latinos.

Around 95 a huge wave of illegals came in.
The plants expanded. Wages went from around 15/hour in the 80s to 10/hour in the mid 90s.
That's when I worked there. Today wages are around 7/hour.

There are two meat packing plants in DC employing around 2-3000 each. In a town of 25-30,000. half the plant workforce is straight from Mexico-Nortenos mostly.
A Quarter is Guatemalen/Salvadoran and the remainder Anglos or Mexican-Americans in management.

Since the human tsunami first appeared in 95 we have built 4 new schools and 2 new jails, with a declining tax base because anyone who can flee has fled...hehe.

It's a friggin nightmare. I got out of there with college-same with some of my relatives. The old relatives are stuck there living in Tijuana, Kansas.

George Bush wants this for all of America.

Pray and work for his defeat.

I drove through Liberal Ks. Last year and it looked like 80 to 90% Hispanic.

Another shocker was Mojave Ca. It looks like 95-100% Arab.

:)Easy Does It:)

It's similar in other parts of the country. Yakima, Washington is now about 40-50% Mexican. There have been gang shootings in some dinky little Idaho farm towns. In the neighborhood I lived in back in California, it was 50% Mexican 10 years ago. Now it's 90% and the remaining non-Mexicans are mostly old with no kids. In Watsonville, California the public schools are very near 100%.

One thing that shocked me down in Carson, California was that in and around the Carson Mall there were no coffee places and no bookstores.

Believe it or not, the GOP's own website is now split into an English one at http://www.rnc.org and a Spanish one at "http://www.rnc.org/Espanol/

This is ridiculous. If someone wants to participate in our political system, they need to be fluent in English.
