Wow what a witch, glad she's out of your life.

Women like that give the rest of us a bad name.

"All my life, I believed in Republican values -- individual responsibility and limited government."

No you didn't, not at all.

"it happened; I found myself with a small child, unemployed and disabled."

Do you suppose that's all part of a republican plot to smite you for the virgin birth, or is it, because your responsibility was limited to feelings?

"I turned to my church, and after years of regular tithes, suddenly I just wasn't their problem."

Looks like you never paid attnetion to what your church was about. It also looks like you think they owed you something and failed to cough up after all those years of paying premiums.

"My Republican friends? I was now a pariah to them. My only relief was to turn to government assistance for housing, food, and other needs and I was able to survive with dignity."

With dignity, right. That means you get to play the victim, shoot your mouth off and blame the evil GOP for your failures. What, no reps stepped forward to personally by you a house and condemn the rest of the world for not personally doing that?

"So chalk me up as one who no longer drinks the GOP koolaid."

You drank the DUmmies brew all your life and you haven't stopped. Now you can bitch off your soapbox and steal whatever you want at a polling place. That's how you keep a clear conscience, the world owes you whatever you want afterall. At least you didn't kill your kid, because they were a burden. Your "new" DUmmy buddies promote that.

Dignity living off other people's work. What a attitude!

Thanks for the factual reply. Just one more thing...you write, "This was a FAMILY shelter, no singles are eligible." Does that mean the recipients needed to be a man and woman who were both present, who were married to each other, and who had children?
Was a widow with children eligible? An abandoned wife with children? A mother whose husband was in prison?

I'm interested because I've done some assistance of poor women myself. There's always someone who falls through the cracks. Nobody wants to bend their rules, and yet sometimes there's a rule of six weeks maximum stay at a shelter and six months on the waiting list for housing. Or the welfare agency needs to try to offset their expenditures by seeking to obtain support from the homicidal stalker who is only too happy to hear from them where his victim is.
The best helping hand, I have found, is one loving Christian's hand extended to one in distress. There is only one rule in such an encounter. And only One in authority to account to.
That's not to say organizations do no good, of course they do a great deal of good. And by far, more than the rule-bound governments at any level.

My x found her true love, all the money in every bank account, and everything in my house was gone one day when I came home from work... The good news is I replaced everything and she don't have a pot to pi$$ in or a window to throw it out of.

Gosh, that reminds me of a woman I helped out 2 years ago. Except she didn't have a pot to pi$$ in when I got there. No functional toilet for a year. She was weighing in at 68 pounds because her husband was spending her welfare money on bigger, younger women. I helped her raid every phony bank account he had (and they were all phony), take everything but the paint off the walls, and get herself gone before he got home from what he was pleased to call "work." (Bilking widows and collecting identities.)
All I really gave her, aside from my free time, was the rental of the van, a half-duplex that cost me $700, and a shotgun.
(So what happened to her? Among other things she now has three working bathrooms, pays taxes and eats regularly.)

No, You could have single mom's, single dad's or a MARRIED couple.

"Was a widow with children eligible? An abandoned wife with children? A mother whose husband was in prison? "

Yes.

"Nobody wants to bend their rules, and yet sometimes there's a rule of six weeks maximum stay at a shelter and six months on the waiting list for housing."

They had a certain amount of time they could stay but I don't remember what it was. There were other shelters that would take people in when we were full. We only had four bedrooms at the shelter I worked at but it was enough to drive me crazy at times. Some of the people we had didn't have a lot of social skills and were difficult to handle. They didn't seem to understand the concept of "rules" and I have been cursed at when I requested they take out the trash or some other small chore.

We had lots of volunteers for temporary work but it was hard to get people to stay overnight, it was just too tough for them. The shelter was in a very bad neighborhood (I know, I was raised there) and there were lots of opportunities to buy drugs and alchohol.

...you're poor, but still have a computer.

Not only that, but this person chooses to continue to pay monthly charges for her ISP, a clearly discretionary expense. Now, I'm not sure if she's under some kind of contract and she has to continue paying, but...
