Hispanic Leaders Call for Censure of CNN Host Lou Dobbs
Press Release ^ | None

Posted on 04/26/2006 3:41:33 PM PDT by HEMICRASHBOX

WASHINGTON, April 26, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Hispanic Institute, a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., called upon CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton to censure CNN News Anchor Lou Dobbs for what the organization describes as outrageous and incendiary language in his reporting on immigration policy and the debate on that issue in congress. Gus West, a member of the Board of Directors of The Hispanic Institute said, ``We are specifically calling upon the management of CNN to censure Mr. Dobbs because it is obvious CNN is allowing him to sacrifice the notion of objective and balanced reporting for sensationalism and ratings increases. At a time when a balanced and thoughtful debate is required to address the security of our borders, and how we deal with individuals that come to this country seeking a better life, Mr. Dobbs's inflammatory rhetoric does not contribute to a solution.''

As part of its mission, The Hispanic Institute seeks to educate policy makers and the general public, on the economic contributions of Hispanics to the United States.

The Hispanic Institute released the following editorial to the media:

Enough is enough. Over the past three years, CNN has, through its commentator Lou Dobbs, transformed a serious domestic/economic issue into a rant against international terrorism.

Yes, we believe immigration reform is needed. We believe it is an issue that can and should be debated, discussed, and dissected. We do not however, believe that Mr. Dobbs's use of incendiary language when describing the situation or the people involved is productive.

He describes border crossings by people in search of work as an "invasion" that leads to an "environment of lawlessness and anarchy". He somehow ties the "illegal alien crisis" to drugs and terror. Further, he describes the people and organizations who disagree with him as an "obscene alliance of corporate supremacists, desperate labor unions, and ethnocentric Latino activists." He even agreed with the head of a Political Action Committee when she suggested the Catholic Church is advocating the breaking of the law.

Beyond the inflammatory words and phrases, Mr. Dobbs continually uses inaccuracies and incomplete information. During one show he states "people are flooding across the border carrying dangerous diseases." Dangerous diseases! This is irresponsible. On another show he claimed that illegal immigrants were "clogging up the federal prisons" but by the end of the show his own reporter, Bill Tucker, stated that there was "no way of telling whether they are illegal or not." Finally, his numbers keep growing. On each show he uses different figures for the number of undocumented people in this country. He has used eight million, ten million, twelve million, and then reported that Bear Stearns says that there are twenty million in the country.

Again, as we have said an open and honest debate is required here. But if you study the Dobbs Show guest list you will see a preponderance of anti-immigration advocates, and extremist politicians. The ratio of these versus his so-called "obscene alliance" is well over two to one. It is time to be fair. It is time to be honest.

To paraphrase Joseph Lash, "Have you no sense of decency sir? At long last have you no sense of decency!"

We want to add our voice to the symphony of voices that call on Mr. Dobbs and CNN to be fair, honest, and accurate in the presentation of this issue.

The Hispanic Institute is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. The Hispanic Institute provides an effective education forum for an informed and empowered Hispanic America.

It's not that it's "outrageous and incendiary language". It's that it's "outrageous and incendiary truth" that hurts these poor little sensitive dears.

Benjamin points out that most immigrants are not screened for TB before arriving in the United States."

And ALL illegal aliens aren't screened for it.

Well if they dislike him so much for stating the truth...on CNN no less, guess I'll have to start making it a point to watch him. :-)

Well, all I can say is, if you find the truth "inflammatory," it isn't the speaker who has a problem.

Hmmm...if they actually try and boycott him, that may be one of the few things that will actually get me to tune into CNN...for that show only.

That is exactly what I have done. When he gets off on other subjects, I go back to Fox ... but on THIS issue, he is almost a "lone voice" out there and I support his efforts. Lou Dobbs has actually "earned" some respect from me ... question is, will the folks running for congress in November also earn it?

I do... for the most part more interesting than Brit -- not that I don't like and respect Brit, I do, but Lou isn't parsing his words or the facts and The Beltway Boys are so out of it when it comes to what we all really think about illegal immigration it isn't even funny.

I've been trying to figure that one out. They're located supposedly in D.C., according to their website at this address

The Hispanic Institute
227 Massachusetts Avenue, NE
Washington, DC
www.thehispanicinstitute.info

According to their Mission Statement, "The Hispanic Institute provides an effective education forum for an informed and empowered Hispanic America." If they are not-for-profit, it is not listed with the federal government's Publication 78 (Search for Charities).

"There were no exempt organizations found matching the search values you entered. Please refine your search and try again." http://www.irs.gov/index.html

Aren't not-for-profit orgnizations exempt from being taxed (but not exempt from filing returns)?

Lou Dobbs is frank by European standards. I don't think you can talk like that on German TV for instance.

It does make sense though what he says, and it may indicate that CNN likes to trump for the illegals but keeps him on so that the white listeners don't dump the network. Double Play?

It's drug-resistant TB, too. Back in the good old days when we had control of immigration, we screened immigrants for TB and turned them back if they tested positive. Now we have to worry about TB, bubonic plague, dysentery, etc. And how much we will have to pay in taxes to treat millions of illegals with virulent, Third World diseases? The USA is seeing a decline in its quality of life as our cities and suburbs become more crowded with people whose educational level is equivalent to high school dropouts. We're seeing an increase in drug trafficking across the southern border. And nothing is being done about it.

Welcome to America, we have something called freedom of speech here. If you came here legally, you might know that.

"obscene alliance of corporate supremacists, desperate labor unions, and ethnocentric Latino activists."

Excellent. Needs to be repeated daily. I'd proably add psycophantic politicians to the mix as well.

I am a Hispanic...or Latino... I am not a Mexican.. - LABELS, labels - I'm legal.. moreover I am a U.S. citizen (only)since I don't believe in "dual" citizenship!...

I am also a Republican mostly because I care about social issues ever since the Rat party became the party of the perverts. So it's kind of difficult to discern what group are they really talking about, without really knowing how are the LABELS being used in this instance...Because as far as I know, I don't have "Hispanic Leader," LOL

Welcome to the new US of A: if some corrupt group (mooslimb or sp'ic) finds what you say "offensive" (read "TRUE") they and their friends the ACLU will use "justice" to shut you up.
