Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 300+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 117th place (with 1,038 active CPUs - 29,000 completed Work Units and more than 5,000,000 points).

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 16 folding threads)

I'm working on a 449 point unit. It's taking foever. But 440 points is worth the wait.

I find it interesting that as a group we have so many members that have access to so much horsepower.

Good news - after I cleaned up the registry (and deleted all cache & history files), FAH didn't have any problem downloading a new WU and going to work on it. So, I'm not going to replace the wininet.dll file, yet. I'll wait and see if things keep going ok.

BTW, there are some freeware/shareware & low cost registry cleaner programs available. Just google "registry cleaner"

I've had this problem on a couple of occasions recently as well.

I fixed it by wiping out the work directory, and all the files except for the original FAH504-Console.exe executable and the configuration file. Then I started up, and everything worked fine.

New QMD core coming out of Beta

I noticed these and read through the FAQ, here are a few of the details:

The QMD problems require 512MB to 1 GB of memeory to run, so you will need plenty of memory.

They apparently give you extra credit in the points department since these problems use more system resources.

Due to Stanford using an Intel compiler, these problems will run faster (2x reportedly) on Intel hardware with SSE2. Some AMD cpus have SSE2, but the Intel compiler doesn't take advantage of it. At first, I read that they were not giving these problems out to AMD computers, but it looks like they are as I found reports of frame times for an Athlon XP. More here QMD FAQ

So if you have an Intel CPU and lots of memory you should be able to rack up the points. You will need to configure the client to accept big WU's and use advanced methods.

I haven't tried these since all my Folder's have AMD CPU's, but I would be interested to hear if anyone else runs a QMD.
