Bush Says Massive Deportation Is Not Realistic(Ike did it, so can Bush!)

President Bush in Irvine today called for a rational, temporary guest worker program and said that attempting to deport as many as 12 million undocumented workers illegally in the United States was a policy that was not going to work.

Bush capped a four-day trip to California with a visit to the Orange County Business Council, made up of 300 businesses, where he gave his most detailed comments on immigration since a bipartisan compromise in the Senate fell apart more than two weeks ago.

Congress returned to Washington today from its holiday recess with immigration policy one of the key unresolved issues on its agenda.

"We cannot lose sight of that we are talking about human beings that need to be treated with respect," Bush told the group, adding, "Massive deportation of human beings is not going to work."

As he has before, Bush tried to temper his call for tough enforcement.

"You can be a nation of law and a compassionate nation at the same time," he said.

At first he said the guest worker program would last 3 to 6 years then they'd have to go home.

And how do we enforce that?

Massive deportations are not necessary.

Fine the employers so it hurts.

Cut off the welfare, medical treatment and availability of schools

Children born to illegals don't get citizenship.

Poof, they'll all go home by themselves

So "Massive Deportation" is not possible? How about "Moderate Deportation", "Significant Deportation", or "Minimal Deportation"?

That's what I'd like to know - if "we can't possibly deport all 11 million illegal aliens", then how many "can" we deport? 8 million? 4 million? 1 million? 600 thousand? 150 thousand? 20 thousand? 5 thousand? 800? 250? 46? 2?

No - I think I know the answer - ZERO.

Here's how this is going to play out:

The Senate will pass a weak, watered-down bill, with some money designated for "border security", a vague plan to "study" the impact of a guest worker program, and minimal references to enforcing existing laws. The House will reconcile with a few things, but the main result will be an increase in H1-B and agricultural visas, about $5 Billion for additional border security, and maybe 50 miles of "improved fencing" around cities and Organ pipe national monument.

I'm all for compassion but not the President's definition of compassion.

His idea is to give something that belongs to me, to someone elase because he feels sorry for THEM.

And how do we enforce that?

We don't but Bush didn't want to come out and say "earned legalization" or amnesty so he gave us that line. No one believed it that I know of.

Ugh.

Look, it does you no good to recite what crimes they've committed if the current method of prosecuting those crimes is too cumbersome. Check out this link to a U.S. Circuit Court decision in which an illegal appealed his conviction under 8 U.S.C. 1326.

http://www.ilw.com/immigdaily/cases/2001,1130-Vasquez-Appellee.pdf#search='8%20u.s.c.%201326'

That's a decision by a U.S. Court of Appeals. There are only 15 such courts, one step below SCOTUS. Do you have any idea of the time it would take to process every one of those illegals through the court system under the current law?

There is a huge difference between the substantive content of a law -- what is criminalized -- and the procedure established by the law for enforcement. You're focusing on the former and ignoring the latter.

First things first. If you have a levee breakage you first fix the hole in the levee and then pump out the water later. And then after the hole is patched you don't pump out all of the water at one time you do it slowly over a period of time. And that's how this should be done. The critical thing is to fix the hole immediately and not allow that effort to be bogged down and held hostage to the arguments over how you deal with the water already in.

Too bad he is not HALF as caring and compassionate about the Americans who elected him, thinking that he would put the future of the nation first rather than his standing with his buddy Fox.

You could be right, I just don't see a massive blanket amnesty ever going through again. Too much opposition.

Agree. New proposed Border Patrol recitation of rights to captured Mexican nationals--not "illegal immigrants"--defecating on our country: "You have the right to pat your stomach while rubbing your head. Or vice versa, I decide which is right, while you recite the American Pledge of Allegiance verbatim, accent-free, and then maybe I won't bust a cap in your . . . You've got 4 seconds, Go!"

Soooo, there are 240 million of US and 12 million of them. We outnumber them 20:1. What is the problem? Lack of will in the Casa Blanca.

tax money orders sent to Mexico.

They'll take themselves home, just like they got here: one at a time.

Exactly...those guys will run south so fast...several other things, arrest enough employers...jobs will dry up and they'll be NO reason for the illegals to stay...we'll have a huge exit south...also NO WELFARE--here in Texas they're called LONE STAR CARDS...medicaid is stopping July 1st.
