President Bush in Irvine today called for a rational, temporary guest worker program and said that attempting to deport as many as 12 million undocumented workers illegally in the United States was a policy that was not going to work.
Bush capped a four-day trip to California with a visit to the Orange County Business Council, made up of 300 businesses, where he gave his most detailed comments on immigration since a bipartisan compromise in the Senate fell apart more than two weeks ago.
Congress returned to Washington today from its holiday recess with immigration policy one of the key unresolved issues on its agenda.
"We cannot lose sight of that we are talking about human beings that need to be treated with respect," Bush told the group, adding, "Massive deportation of human beings is not going to work."
As he has before, Bush tried to temper his call for tough enforcement.
"You can be a nation of law and a compassionate nation at the same time," he said.

** That kind of talk only bolsters the will of the illegals **
And that's EXACTLY what Bush wants.
A few months ago Lou Dobbs refered to DHS and their figure. There were 3.6 MILLION Visa overstays that they cannot find and under 100 agents in the entire country looking for them. The head of USIS has testified before congress that their agencies cannot handle another guest worker program.

Where is his compassion toward the law abiding citizens who are paying their taxes to pay for the educations that these people are stealing, the health care that they're stealing, the housing and food stamp assistance these people are stealing. Where is his compassion of the rest of us who are suffering from the strain of the infrastructure that we built being worn out by the illegals and their innumerable ninos.
I haven't gotten one of their questionnaire letters for a couple of months - but when I do, they will definitely get the same message from me.
Unbelievable - immigration and the borders not even mentioned!
Bush and the Republicans are offering us the false choice of deporting the criminals who cross our border. Mark Kirkorian's Center for Immigration Studies shows that simply stopping the illegal entries will whittle the problem down to manageable size in just a few years, and for a reasonable cost. Stop the illegals now, and then we can talk about other immigration issues. I called both my Repub senators today and told them if they sell out on this, they can kiss my vote goodbye forever. You can't have a serious war on terror and at the same time have uncontrolled borders. I was a big Dubya fan, but if I got a call now from a pollster, I'd say I was highly unhappy with him. This should cause his poll numbers to fall ever further. He's too weak for the job.
Right and those were trackable aliens but they're here to stay because the government refuses to enforce the law. Imagine a new guest worker program ten times bigger than the current one, it'll be a nightmare.
If he were smart, he would call for a national I.D. based on current valid documents and then set in motion an automatic deportation to Mexican border cities and have Fox agree to monitor those who were found here without a valid I.D. until such time as they can be cleared of any felonies and process them in turn for consideration for guest-worker status and send them back; that way, the uproar by ordinary U.S. citizens, who would rally against the I.D. part, would maintain the status quo without risking a policy at odds with the anti-immigrants.
Be prepared for Monday, what the media's not telling you......

And I've heard today that International Brotherhood of Teamsters WILL honor picket lines.
Looks like the country comes to a hault on May 1.
80% of Americans are very disturbed by illegal immigration. Congress just ignores the problem, hoping if they hide under their beds everything will soon die down. Our elected representatives have taken bribe money from lobbyists long enough. Bag men from corporate employers are sneaking around with bags of cash for pay offs. Congress wants to amend the law making amnesty possible for 18 - 20 million illegals. Amending the law will also allow the U.S. to continue ignoring the problem with border jumpers. Americans should be outraged. Instead, we just drive bleary eyed to work every day, watch mindless television and fall into our beds at night.
Are you folks as sick of this B.S. coming from Congress as I am?
Did anyone else have trouble making sense of the Operation Wetback details in the link?
Count me among those who support jail time for any employer who knowingly hires an ILLEGAL immigrant. If you remove the incentive for them to be here, they'll go back on their own.
The jobs will not dry up, they will find ways to get around any laws that are passed. There is such a thing as supply and demand and the demand for low paying labor outstrips the supply. You may as well try to empty the ocean with a bucket.

Enforce the the Law !
I think that's the 'show and tell' their trying to pull on us right now. Last I heard, it's just more of the same. Even the 1,000 from the other day were 'catch and release'. I want them to enforce the law by putting them on busses and sending them home. Then again, until a wall is built they'll be back tomorrow. In the meantime, our lawmakers are figuring out how best to appease them in order to prevent a civil war and gain their votes. Amazing.
If harsh penalties for employing illegals are enacted, and employers and businesses want to play Russian roulette with huge fines, I guess that is their call. Would you take the risk with your business, or the headache and expense of a court battle if you wanted fight a fine? I wouldn't.
Say it ain't so.
Enforcing the law IS compassion. Economists have determined that the difference in wealth between the US (and Australia, Canada, UK, Germany, Switzerland, etc.) and the third world is to 90% caused not by natural resources or productivity, but by the rule of law. Our very existence in a prosperous and free country is totally dependent on the rule of law. So, we have another President pissing all over enforcing the law. Thanks, I'm in debt and soon to be unemployed, thanks for the help Mr Compassionate Conservative.
I send one of these back to the RNC and Penna Gopers, each time a request comes in the mail:
