6 Middle Schoolers Arrested After Planning Massacre

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Police said a group of seventh-graders hatched an elaborate plan to cut off power and telephone service to their middle school, slay classmates and faculty with guns and knives, then escape from their small Alaska town.

The arrest Saturday of six students in North Pole, a town of 1,600 people about 14 miles southeast of Fairbanks, marks the nation's second breakup of an alleged Columbine-style school attack this week. Five Kansas teenagers suspected of planning a shooting rampage at their high school were arrested Thursday, the seventh anniversary of the massacre in suburban Colorado.

The Alaskan seventh-graders had been picked on by other students and wanted to seek revenge, Police Chief Paul Lindhag said. They also disliked staff and students, he said.

The students had planned to disable North Pole Middle School's power and telephone systems, allotting time to kill their victims and flee from town, Lindhag said.

A parent alerted police of rumors of an attack, Lindhag said. He would not elaborate on the case, or what kind of documented evidence led to the arrests.

"These are the ones who had major roles in this," Lindhag said. "All our information came through our interviews."

This country is rotting and becoming a cesspool.

It doesn't matter who holds power, Rep. or Dem.

The culture is dying and basically dead.

Evidently, dangerous terrorists have gotten lose in the 7th grade.

Shall we send in Homeland Security? Will President Bush call an emergency cabinet meeting? Has anyone alerted the FBI?

If they were ever picked on, then maybe this is part of it....

They are now accused of witchcraft, virtually, despite that they have done nothing.

I agree. And whenever somebody suggests even a small step toward curtailing the rot, somebody else immediately hollers that his liberty is endangered. Happens all the time around here, among many other places.

Perhaps I'm wearing my tinfoil hat a bit too tight these days--but when I heard of the kids in KS, and now these in AK, one of the first thoughts to run through my head was--I wonder who is behind this.

Does anyone else think there is the remote possibility that some gun grabbing group is trying to find a group of gullible kids to pull off another Columbine?

Lordy, I hope I'm not becoming one of those folks who see conspiracy everywhere!

"The boys, ages 16 to 18, will stay in custody through the weekend while prosecutors decide whether to file charges, a judge ruled Saturday."

Wait a minute. What kind of 7th graders are 16-18? What the heck is going on in public schools.

I was wondering when this would arrive on FR. It has been in the national news all day and in the Alaska news since the middle of last week. It is not a total shock, not even a partial shock. This is not a utopia, although those who haven't been here and hung around for a while tend to think it is that or an ignorant backwoods.

I would not put it past them. They really want the guns bad. They have no chance now politically so they might NEED another event such as this to say "Mr and Mrs America turn them all in"

But then again.. who knows.

All the kids are macho, and it runs right through high school.

"The boys, ages 16 to 18, will stay in custody through the weekend while prosecutors decide whether to file charges, a judge ruled Saturday."

The prior sentence in the article makes clear they were referring to the other plot, in the Kansas high school
