Opposites attract
Sacramento Bee ^ | 4/23/6 | Gina Kim

Opposites attract He's a Republican, she's a Democrat. Or vice versa. They might not agree when it comes to politics, but these couples have found love on the 'other side.'

It's hard enough choking down forkfuls of Caesar salad during a political skirmish with friends. Try waking up next to the "other side."

Politics divides our country and sometimes our bedrooms, too.

But a bipartisan relationship isn't necessarily destined for disaster. Just look at Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic scion Maria Shriver, who celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary Wednesday.

And, according to state voter registration records, almost 10 percent of households in Sacramento County have at least one Democrat and one Republican, although that includes spouses as well as roommates, parents, children and unmarried partners.

"If it works for the governor and his wife, it's good enough for us," says Drisha Leggitt-Luhdorff, a lifelong Democrat who married a lifelong Republican in September.

Passionate politics

Leggitt-Luhdorff, 43, swore she would never cross the political aisle when it came to dating, but couldn't help herself when she met Mark Luhdorff, a certified public accountant.

"He's gorgeous, he's funny, he's smart and unfortunately he's a Republican," says Leggitt-Luhdorff, who owns a public relations company. "Three out of four isn't bad."

The couple, who now split their time between homes in Elk Grove and Roseville, worked together on the board of directors for the Sacramento Philharmonic. It wasn't until after a few dates that their political affiliations were revealed.

"And then all of a sudden we found that we got into these really deep and very interesting discussions over things like philosophy and why we think our parties took the positions they did and why we took the positions we did," Leggitt-Luhdorff says.

Well, what choice does a Democrat woman have? It isn't like she is going to find any marriageable men in her party. ;)

He may be a Republican, but real CONSERVATIVES don't hyphenate, and they don't marry chicks who do. Do they? I wouldn't have married a hyphenater.

Such couples leave politics at the bedroom door. You can make a marriage work even when you have differences as long as you both respect each other. Sometimes opposites do attract, if the chemistry's there.

"Arnold" is hardly a good candidate to pose as a Republican. He's a RINO!

EGADS!

no way would I want to date a lib man...let alone marry

NO WAY!

ugh! I kid you not.. one guy (claimed to be an 'independent') stopped talking to me for weeks.... then told me that he felt "attacked" by a converstaion we had....

it was over gun control... I said "Taking away the rights of law abiders to have guns to protect themselves adds to the problem, it doesn't solve it."

that was an "attack"

and he couldn't bring himself to talk to me about what was bothering him ofr weeks... this was also the "break-up" conversation...

I was dumped over this....lucky ME! LOL!

I couldn't do it! When the infatuation cools the philosophical storms will rise.

If you make it personal, no relationship is going to last. If you're going to argue about things be passionate and if you don't come to a meeting of the minds, agree to disagree and say I still love you. Sometimes that's all you can do, if you perceive that person is your mate. None of us are perfect.

Actually, REAL conservatives don't give a rat's patootie about what other people call themselves. You're thinking of the busy-body conservatives. They're an ancient breed, but on the resurgence lately.

You're right. My mother is a Democrat and my father is a Republican and they have been happily married for 28 years now.

Shudder. Shudder, shudder, shudder.

I met my beloved fiance right here on FreeRepublic! I can't imagine being with some liberal girly-man nor can I figure out how good conservative guys can be happy with some liberal feel-good chick.

LOL! that is the whole problem.. it wasn't an argument at all...not even a debate....

it was in passing conversation....

he is a good guy.... very good guy... just not my type....

my point is that I like MANLY MEN....no reason to bend into a pretzel to appease a man's ego.. he can disagree all he likes.. no reason for me to feel "attacked" over disagreeing...no reason for him to feel "attacked"

if I can't have a converstaion without being scared of disagreeing with him I am not interested.....

silly...

Well since you presumably don't care what others call you, I don't mind telling you you're an idiot.

I honestly believe that Democrats are fools, with great cognizance problems....there's no way I'd marry one, since I have enough idiots in my life anyhow.
