Thirty-five years after Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kerry (D) appeared before a Senate committee to call for an end to the war in Vietnam, he defended that decision yesterday in a speech in his home town and linked it to his current insistence on an early drawdown of troops from Iraq.
Kerry, in remarks delivered in Boston's Faneuil Hall Marketplace, cast dissent in wartime as a patriotic act -- a response to Republican critics who insist that questioning the conduct of the war in Iraq emboldens America's enemies.
"I believed then, just as I believe now, that it is profoundly wrong to think that fighting for your country overseas and fighting for your country's ideals at home are contradictory or even separate duties," he said. "They are, in fact, two sides of the very same patriotic coin."
Yesterday's address was the latest move in Kerry's shadow presidential campaign, launched in the aftermath of his 2004 defeat by President Bush. In a series of speeches, guest columns and television appearances, Kerry has sought to right what many Democrats regard as the defects of that race by outlining a clear exit strategy for Iraq and vowing to fight back against GOP attacks on his and other Democrats' patriotism. Kerry's aggressive attitude is also aimed at wooing liberal voters for a potential presidential bid in 2008.
Beginning last fall, Kerry has advocated setting a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Recently, he said that if an Iraqi government is not formed by May 15, the United States should immediately withdraw its forces.
"If Iraqis aren't willing to build a unity government in the five months since the election, they're probably not willing to build one at all," Kerry said.

Not a surprise. Catholics can't use condoms. That explains the affinity for early withdrawl.
And you'd be proud of that would you? BTW, that worthless POS was rebuked posthomously for such actions by SCOTUS. But heck, let's round up anyone who disagrees with 'us' shall we?
Not so, oh lumpy lips. Your coin is a counterfeit. The two sides of the patriotic coin are action groups and support groups.
Response: Treason and sedition are patriotism. Up is down. Black is white.

What's really amazing is the fact that the morons in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts keep sending Hanoi Kerry and Chappy Kennedy back to the U.S. Senate. Treason, DUI, leaving the scene, vehicular manslaughter, perjury, and obstruction of justice are all qualifications to be a member of the Jackass Party.
ta-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa, went the the twin engines on John kill em all kerry's boat (real heros have nick names like that). LOL!
Considering that the kindest thing he was called by some papers was "Ape", reporters and publishers maybe should have figured that discretion is the better part of valor and left town for a few days.
Wish GW would do the same starting with Helen Thomas.
That reminds me of Wile E. Coyote's persist attitude.
4. Wrong!
5. Stupid!
6. Murdering Islamist sympathizer.
7. All of the above?
Yes!
Painting ones self orange to woo Florida voters..
That was great, wasn't it? And the drunken midnight press conference, those were the days. Thanks for the memory.
It still scares the hell out of me that Crazy Ol' Al and The Goofy Orange Traitor came as close as they did to winning.
How can someone think they deserve to be president when they can't even tell the truth about whether they spruced up with a little botox or not?
Another Kerry anecdote was when he went to The Frozen Tundra and called Lambeau Field, Lambert Field. Or when he said if he was elected President, his first 100 days would be flying around apologizing for the War on Terror. Still another was the competing Ohio rallies, where Bush's rally blocked roads, gave up on collecting tickets, and had 60,000+ Bush voters waving flags, while Kerry's rally had bussed in union thugs looking dejected and mind numblingly bored at the cadaver on stage droning on. The segment on the news that contrasted the two rallies was priceless. I think it was a Gibson piece..
Thanks for the memory. President Bush came to to our city just prior to the last election. We had tickets but still stood in line 4 hours, in the rain, in August, in Florida just to be close enough to see. I stood on the bleachers and looked back down the streets, at 1000s of shoulder to shoulder people waving flags and cheering for W. It was awesome. My mother in her 70s stood out there with me the whole time and said "it's like he's a rock star" LOL What a great day.
"Did you say gallows?"
For WAAAYYY LESS that the lies the NY TIMES and WaPo have written Lincoln shut the papers down and jailed the editors.
I just wish we weren't acting like panty waists and were as serious about winning this war as Lincoln was about winning his. To wit:
During the Civil War, the Union Army conducted at least 4,271 trials by military commission, which reflected the disorder of the time. Lincoln answered his critics with a reasoned, constitutional argument. A national crisis existed, and in the interest of self-preservation he had to act. At the same time, he realized Congress had the ultimate responsibility to pass judgment on the measures he had taken.
He found the right of self-preservation in Article II, section 1 of the Constitution, whereby the chief executive is required "to preserve, protect and defend" it, and in section 3, that he "take care that the laws be faithfully executed." All of the laws which were required to be "faithfully executed" were being resisted and "failed of execution" in nearly one-third of the states.
Clement Laird Vallandigham, the best-known anti-war Copperhead18 of the Civil War, was perhaps President Lincoln's sharpest critic. He charged Lincoln with the "wicked and hazardous experiment" of calling the people to arms without counsel and authority of Congress, with suspending the writ of habeas corpus, and with "coolly" coming before the Congress and pleading that he was only "preserving and protecting" the Constitution and demanding and expecting the thanks of Congress and the country for his "usurpations of power."
Vallandigham was speaking at a Democratic mass meeting at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, when he was arrested by Major General Ambrose E. Burnside. He was escorted to Kemper Barracks, the military prison in Cincinnati, and tried by a military commission. He was found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment for the duration of the war.
After being denied a writ of habeas corpus, he applied for a writ of certiorari to bring the proceedings of the military commission for review before the Supreme Court of the United States. In the opinion Ex parte Vallandigham,21 his application was denied on the grounds that the Supreme Court had no jurisdiction over a military tribunal.
