President Bush will land in a hotbed of the illegal-immigration debate Monday when he flies into Orange County, and he's likely to find a tough sell for his approach.

Bush's call for a guest-worker program has riled many who say that the international borders must be secured before normalizing the status of any of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

When Bush stands up at the Hyatt Regency Irvine to pitch his views on immigration to the Orange County Business Council, some will applaud his decision to talk here - if not what he's pushing.

"I'd rather he come here and listen to us than somewhere everybody supports him," said Rep. Gary Miller, R-Diamond Bar, who opposes Bush's approach but will be on hand. "It offers us an opportunity to talk to him."

Actually illegals should never be "normalized", or whatever new code word they've come up with. After securing the borders a policy of attrition to get the population under control is most people want to see. Only then can they talk about a guest worker program.

I support a comprehensive approach as well: build a border barrier, rescind the anchor baby laws, cut off the taxpayer freebies, and heavily fine illegal-hiring employers.

Bush's business position:

"Some immigration is good, and so unlimited, illegal immigration must be really good."

My only comment is that Mr. Bush went to Harvard Business school.

If anyone bothers to read the opinion of the Heritage Foundation, they are now saying that unlimited illegal immigration is a significant economic burden on the taxpayer.

In other words, businesses shift most of their private costs of hiring illegals to the public as an unreimbursed social cost: This is called a negative externality.

The Heritage Foundation is now also saying that educating the offspring of illegals is an extremely expensive and unproductive use of this country's scarce resources.

This is a complete about-face from a year ago when the Heritage Foundation was leading the charge for abolishing the public school system and instituting vouchers.

Illegal immigration has changed the face of California for the worse. Mr. Bush will get a full dose of that in OC.

I can hardly wait to see the look on his face.

We really need a strong Constitutionalist party to vote for. I think I will reserve my future votes for that parties candidates exclusively.

Bush's plan gets bad press. If you look at the plan the NUMBER ONE item on it is Border Enforcement. It is and always has been.

That gets ignored by the media in order to talk about what is well down the list, the guest worker program.

So Bush's plan is really not all that bad, if you just put a 6-10 year delay in implementation between step 1, shutting off the influx and letting those here self deport for funerals, etc, and then 10 yrs later let them apply to pay their fines and make a trip to the border for proper processing.

I have a definite problem with taking a guy who has been in the country for 20 yrs and working and not committing crimes, has 4 US citizen kids, 1 of whom is a West Point graduate . . . and tossing him. He owes back taxes, he owes a fine, but he has been a contributing member of society. He is also the one who is going to be on TV if you try to toss them all en masse.

There has to be case by case evaluation, but ONLY after the border is closed and many years pass.

Imagine the difference in America today if Bush had come to Office, issued an Executive Order for a fence to be built across our entire Southern border.

He didn't do that, instead he fought to keep the Border Patrol so under funded that they can barely train new officers coming on board to replace the ones who are retiring.

It's good that the silly assertion being made by the globalists that "...it is impossible to round up 11 million illegals" is being over-run by the rebuttal that the genuine threat of jail for employers will dry up the labor market for illegals and force them to leave on their own. A genuine threat will require more than the token action taken this week against IFCO.

What happens to "genuine threat of jail for employers" when juries routinely acquit those employers?

It's what turned the 1986 amnesty into a fiasco--US Attorneys brought cases, the cases were tried, and the accused employers were acquitted.

The law makes knowingly employing an illegal alien a felony. But proving beyond reasonable doubt that the employer knowingly employed an illegal alien is damn near impossible.
