Walter Durranty of the NYT won a Pulitzer Prize for parroting Joesph Stalin's propaganda. He ignored the tens of millions of people Uncle Joe sent to the gulags to die in misery to tell the world that the Soviet Union was a peaceful worker's paradise.
To this day, the NYT won't admit that Durranty's "reporting" was all lies, and they proudly display Durranty's Pulitzer.
It seems to me that it's too early to say with any confidence that Mary McCarthy was trapped by a false story fed to her about the East European prisons.
What we have, so far, is a statement from the Euros that they can't confirm the existence of such prisons. But, let's face it, what else can they say without completely blowing up the Atlantic alliance? They vented their anti-Americanism by whining and screaming in the European media. The entire left has been fed the propaganda line, and they all know about it. But do European governments and intelligence agencies really want to risk a formal break with the United States by taking official notice?
In other words, it's still possible that they "couldn't confirm it" because, much as they may personally hate the U.S., they didn't WANT to confirm it officially and take the consequences. It would be incredibly damaging, and more so to Europe than to us.

Doesn't matter. Elements of the story may of been true but the story itself about "Secret CIA prisions in Europe" is a lie. The EU announced there is ZERO evidence to back up this story. That this line or that line in the story is accurate does not excuse the incredibly sloppy "Journalism" that was put into this "Pulitzer Price winning story". The message in the story is a LIE, that some facts were correct does NOT excuse the sloppy journalism nor the hype and spin put on the story by the Junk Media.

Good point. I would hope that we wouldn't concoct a story that would give so much more ammunition to our enemies (though I have no problem with secret prisons or torturing terrorists). The Europeans would love to flay us with just such a charge.

I mean the major papers are carrying it. And if they're carrying it, then it's been "OK'd" to talk about.
This is a story that could be construed to vindicate the administration of all the absurd allegations of leaks the left has been stuffing down the world's throat. Further, it exposes a leftwing operative - one of their own - as a blatant traitor. Why would they push it? They never confess to anything; they would try to bury this story unless they saw a way discredit the administration somehow.
Sounds like a *sting op* going on, C. McCarthy will probably get a wrist-slap, and a nice, fat CIA/ US Taxpayer retirement with lot of bennies. She deserves prison and no retirement etc.
