Cardinals and the Law (Cardinal Mahony)
International Herald Tribune ^ | 4/19/2006 | The New York Times

After years of stonewalling, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles has run out of excuses for blocking the prosecution of rogue priests accused in the Catholic Church's pedophilia scandal. While other bishops and cardinals cooperated with the authorities, Mahony became a study in arrogance who only compounded the church's embarrassment. His lawyers concocted elaborate hypotheses that church leaders and priests - under the confidentiality of "the sanctification process" - somehow enjoyed shelter from their basic duty to cooperate with criminal law enforcement. The Supreme Court put an end to the evasions on Monday in refusing to hear the cardinal's final appeal

Is Cardinal Mahony being consistent when he demonstrates his desire to be above the law with regard to illegal aliens and also in protecting his pedophile priest?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that allowing the church to dodge criminal investigations is an Establishment Clause violation.

No man is above the law. Regardless of the issue. Period. Although we have alot of Washington pols that think they can work a double-standard, especially when it comes to illegal immigration...

Yes. Revoke the Los Angeles Archdiocese tax exempt status. He is in charge. I am Catholic and am angrily fed up. I go to a Mission for mass anymore.

I'd bet that Mahoney has thanked many of the perverts for their fine performance in carrying out their priestly duties. Scum ball Cardinal Law had done exactly that.

How often do you see FReepers delighted over the comments of the NY Times.

When your opposition is broad enough to reach from the NY Times to FR, you are in a sh!tload of trouble. Someone, please sentence this guy to share a cell with some of the homosexual rapists whose sexuality/consciences were destroyed by sexual abuse.

What makes you think Mahony would be disturbed being in a cell with his pervert priests. What was Cardinal mahony before he made the rank of Cardinal.? Did you ever think there may be a reason he is so protective?

Somehow? He's in bed (perhaps literally) with the Democrat party and liberal LA Republicans.

What I don't understand is why doesn't the pope remove him? He does have the power to do that does he not and if not he why not his minions in the states-archbishops, cardinals etc? I really want to go back to the Catholic church here in L.A., but with this bozo 'in charge' forget it-I might as well join up with Sharpton's church or go straight to hell for some liturgy. Evil is as evil does and this man reeks of it.

In the meantime I will stay at my church with the new temporary gay Pastor (shaking head in disgust) that changes the words of the bible to PC versions of the text-oh joy-we in the church are in for a long, long haul.
