So The New York Times has found six generals who want Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to resign. The peace party often makes a show of embracing the martial virtues, though they should be careful what they ask for. People often suspect a ruse, and the uniformed front men that come forward are not necessarily top quality.
In 1864, at the climax of the Civil War, the Democrats tried to unseat Abraham Lincoln with the young Napoleon, Gen. George B. McClellan. McClellan had commanded the Unions armies, but chafed at the civilians under whom he served: He called Lincoln a well-meaning baboon. But what should McClellan have been called? This is what the historian John Keegan calls him: vain, vainglorious, opinionated, worldly, self-satisfied, ostentatiously busy . [H]e resembled [Douglas] MacArthur in his arrogance and George C. Marshall in his hauteur, [while lacking] the formers dynamism and the latters strength of character . Young Napoleon managed to carry only three states for the peace party. If the insurgents of the Confederacy had been able to vote, no doubt he would have done better.
Let us assume that Mr. Rumsfelds critics, and Mr. Rumsfeld himself, are all, all honorable men. Real philosophical issues divide them, which makes their dispute more than a catfight, and something other than the obvious protest of outraged experts against the bumbling of outsiders.
In the soft days before 9/11, Mr. Rumsfeld came to the Pentagon intent on transformationmaking the military more high-tech, breaking down the barriers to inter-service cooperation. This is an old fight, for the Pentagon, like any corporation, must evolve to live; if it doesnt, it becomes General Motors. Tail-kickers like Mr. Rumsfeld naturally acquire enemies,

The Left's poster boys LBJ, JFK and FDR would have given their right arms for successes like these.

For all the failings of those three, they still believed in the righteousness of American power, so I doubt they would be on the side of the moonbats were they alive today.
Fortunately, in this country, unlike most places in the world, we don't allow a majority of Generals the right to select our civilian leaders. Tonight I'm seeing my nephew whom I love. He was born in Peru and grew up in Venezuela. His wife is Mexican. But he's Kansan to the core. Point? Of those four countries, this is the only one that even comes close to a true civilian government.
Since the other generals are part of a POWELL FOR PRESIDENT movement, I'd say their motives are clear as well.
Too bad these generals forgot DUTY HONOR COUNTRY and put political aspirations first.
Seems to me that's how the VN war was lost.
Plan? Plan? We don't need no steenking plan!
"Critics Assail Rumsfeld, But What Is Their Plan?"
Just the usual leftist, "liberal" hate anything Bush. Hate anything American, realistic or pragmatic. Anything military.
Easy, they are just setting things up for a Wesley Clark candidacy, with all of these generals supporting Herr Clark.
At the start of the war my wife asked me what will happen to Bush's then very strong poll numbers. I told her the longer we are in Iraq, (and I thought five years would be the minimum), the more his numbers will decline. I knew this war would not be like any other conventional war, and I knew that the backstabbing left would turn into traitors at the first opportunity. I have never lost faith in the mission, and the recent revelations concerning Hussein's documents have proved Bush more right than ever.
I think that most of us would follow DR up any hill.
well Saddam Hussein was a "bad actor" who needed to be taken out and the only regrets I have is that we didn't finish the job in 1991 and we let the S.O.B. live when we finally did capture him.
And as far as I'm concerned, the day we captured Saddam Hussein was the day we found the WMD!
