Excerpts -

Later [Hu] said to Gates: "I admire what you have achieved at Microsoft," Hu said. "Because you, Mr. Bill Gates, are a friend of China, I'm a friend of Microsoft," he said. "Also, I am dealing with the operating system produced by Microsoft every day," he added, amid laughter.

"I certainly look forward to the extension of your cooperation with China," Hu said. Hu also said he would certainly welcome a further increase in Microsoft's investment in China.

"I'd also like to take this opportunity to assure you, Bill Gates, that we will certainly our words in protecting intellectual property rights," Hu said. Gates responded: "Thank you, it's a fantastic relationship. And if you ever need advice on how to use Wkindows, I'll be glad to help."

Why else would you be hounding Bill Gates now?

I personally don't care. I know the realities of the Chinese market. However, it was a fun thing to shove in your face due to your constant Linux/China paranoia.

I suspect that was the reason this article even got posted. :)

I'm against this, freetraitors should know.

Yea surreee we know your against it but hmm what could there excuse be..

Probably the same billion they got from IBM.

Oh yea there it is! I knew you would not forget to call IBM treasonous for dealing with China and calling MS a vitcim for doing the same. When you refuse a straight out condemnation of MS with out qualifying it is (a) not as bad as or (b) forced by IBM you're showing you'll excuse anything from MS..

Hell next thing ya know it will be OK for gates to give money to planned parenthood..

Too bad our traditional Unix companies like Sun, SCO, Silicon Graphics and Cray got crushed in the process.

SCO started as a poorly managed Linux company, and subsequently poorly managed the UNIX business they purchased. The rest you can blame on Intel and AMD, as their commodity processors got so fast that they filled much of the market previously held by Sun, SGI and Cray.

Yeah we know, everything's based on a free copy of Red Hat,

Except for the multitude of Linux distros out there that aren't.

I know the realities of the Chinese market.

And 80% of the government there runs Linux, right? So what's better, us giving them free software, or us selling it to them?

GIVE the Chicomms their software for free,

They can refuse to sell and make them use the lower quality Finnish software.

Linux is lower quality, right?

The question is, do you want a US dominant industry, with an American like Gates making a fortune, or do you want free software, and the U.N. making sure everyone shares properly?

What I was is for our captains of industry to show some spine, salute the flag and make those Chicoms use slackware!!!

IBM is the biggest US IT vendor in China, and has been forever.

Not true. There was a long period during the Cold War where IBM had no presence in China at all.

I received my training in employee management from the IBM executive who opened their first modern office in Beijing the 1970s. He would never kowtow to the Chicoms the way Bill Gates does.

Well I'd like to know who was bigger in China at the time. One thing's for sure, he wouldn't be working for IBM in China now. Those two are as close as two can get.

No, that you have to suck up to the leadership in order to do business there.

So what's better, us giving them free software, or us selling it to them?

As has been pointed out, we know you prefer a whore to a slut.

It is current copyright law that makes people share properly.

How many jobs do you think have been created as a result of the software innovation of Microsoft? A great deal of the productivity gains in the last two decades are becuase of Microsoft. Im not saying they should be cozying up with the chinese, but Bill Gates is an American icon.

If you think that M$ is the only tech company kissing China's ass, you're smoking crack. Apple, Intel, IBM, etc are all in their puckering up for Hu's booty.

Well, in my opinion, Linux is far worse for American industry than anything MS does. Linux undermines America's software industry and shores up foreign competitors like China, India, Pakistan, and other developing nations. It provides them with the IT infrastructure that really should be provided by American software makers. China can instead focus its resources on missiles and military technology. Now THAT sucks.

If you think that M$ is the only tech company kissing China's ass, you're smoking crack. Apple, Intel, IBM, etc are all in their puckering up for Hu's booty.

Here are some quotes from Bill Gates, enthusiastically praising China's Communist dictatorship -

"They're smart. They have this mericratic way of picking people for these government posts where you rotate into the university and really think about state allocation of resources and the welfare of the country and then you rotate back into some bureaucratic position."

"This generation of leaders is so smart, so capable, from the top down, particularly from the top down."

"It is a brand-new form of capitalism, and as a consumer its the best thing that ever happened."

"Scale economies that are just phenomenal."

"Well I could say that every time I go to China I am amazed by the level of energy and activity there. And you know its like super charged capitalism where they're creating new jobs and they are being very efficient. And you know that's daunting. It's a challenge to the rest of the world that we got this great opportunity that they're going to build good products, but we all have to become more efficient to work at that level as well."

"As their people are more college educated and creating inexpensive products. That's just a great thing for our consumers. It does mean that the companies here need to think about selling to China. About how they work with partners there. And measuring their efficiency against the best in the world which in my business will be the leaders in China."

Can you provide any quotes from Samuel Palmisano, Paul Otellini or Steve Jobs to backup your assertions?
