Afghanistan Calls for Crackdown at Border
(Full Story)

Pakistan needs to do more to crack down on terrorism along the Pakistani-Afghan border, a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday.

Rahim Karimi said in the news conference that Afghanistan need greater "cooperation" from both its eastern neighbor and the international community in its battle against Islamic militants.

Coalition and Afghan forces have in recent days been fighting fierce battles against Taliban fighters near the Afghan-Pakistan border.

"Now Saudi Arabia Wants Seat on UN Rights Body"
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com International Editor
April 25, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CNSNews.com) - Saudi Arabia has become the latest undemocratic state with a poor human rights record to seek a seat on the United Nation's new Human Rights Council.

With elections for the body just two weeks away, the number of controversial would-be members is slowly climbing, even as human rights campaigners step up efforts to ensure the best membership possible.

The HRC was established in a bid to restore the U.N.'s standing in the human rights field, after its flagship institution, the Commission for Human Rights, was discredited when rights-abusing governments became members and then blocked criticism of themselves and their allies.

Proponents of the U.N. resolution that set up the council argued that it would be more effective than its predecessor, because the document asks the U.N.'s 191 member states to take into account candidates' human rights records before voting.

Also, each member will be subject to a "periodic review," although it will still require a two-thirds majority vote to remove one of them.

Despite these touted improvements, however, among the 65 nations that have so far announced their candidacies for the HRC's 47 seats are a number whose respect for human rights is frequently questioned.

They include Iran, Cuba, China, Tunisia, Cameroon, Algeria, Pakistan, Russia, Azerbaijan -- and now Saudi Arabia, a newcomer to the list of candidates."

Egyptian bomb outrage is linked with al-Qaida network

THE al-Qaida terror network was today linked to the bombing of an Egyptian beach resort which killed at least 23 people and wounded dozens more, including two Britons.

Police in Egypt said the blasts at the budget Dahab resort may be connected with the latest announcement by Osama bin Laden.

The al-Qaida leader called for attacks on Western targets in an audio tape released at the weekend.

Last night's attack is the third strike against tourist resorts along Egypt's Red Sea coast in the past two years. World leaders today condemned the bombings , which followed blasts in Taba and Sharm al-Sheikh.

Three devices exploded simultaneously at a market and restaurant area popular with western tourists. Security officials have said the bombs were probably triggered by timers rather than suicide bombers.

The 23 people killed include a young German boy and at least two other foreigners. One of those killed is reportedly a Russian tourist. A further 62 people were wounded in the blasts.

The two injured Britons were airlifted to Cairo with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Other Britons spoke of the chaos in the wake of the blasts.

Paul McBeath, who works in the resort, said there had been "no warning whatsoever".

"There were just three loud bangs and people rushing around. Everybody is shaken," he said

Joseph Nazir, who owns a safari company in Dahab, added: "Everybody is panicking, a lot of people are crying. We will be affected by this for a long, long time."

There were a number of foreigners among those wounded, including five Danes, two Italians, two Germans, two French people, a South Korean, an American and a Lebanese.

Witnesses said the blasts occurred close to each other in the centre of the resort at around 7.15pm, when the area was crowded, and a lot of people were eating or shopping.

Egyptian television footage showed body parts scattered on the streets, bloodstained pavement and destroyed shops littered with broken glass.

Many foreign holidaymakers were in the area along with Egyptians celebrating an ancient holiday marking the first day of spring.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw condemned the "callous" terrorists and said a team from the British Embassy in Cairo was en route to Dahab to offer assistance.

"I utterly condemn these appalling bombings in Dahab, which have been targeted at a popular holiday resort and on an Egyptian public holiday. Once again, terrorists have demonstrated their callous disregard for human life."

The European Union also condemned the "despicable" bombings.

In a statement issued in Vienna by Austria, the current holder of the rotating EU presidency, the 25-nation bloc said it "strongly condemns the despicable terrorist attacks in the Egyptian resort town of Dahab which caused death and injuries to numerous people" and offered condolences to families of the victims.

President Jacques Chirac of France condemned what he called an "odious terrorist act."

Italy's President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi expressed "deep indignation" and solidarity.

Zarqawi appears in rare Web video

Apr 25, 2006 — DUBAI (Reuters) - The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, said mujahideen were fighting on despite a three-year "crusader" war, according to a rare video of him posted on the Internet on Tuesday.

"Your mujahideen sons were able to confront the most ferocious of crusader campaigns on a Muslim state. They have stood in the face of this onslaught for three years," Zarqawi said on the video.

In first videotape: Zarqawi slams US for waging ”crusader” war

An Islamic Web site on Tuesday posted a rare video showing al-Qaeda leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who accused the West and the United States of waging a "crusader" war. In the video, the first of the Jordan-born militant, he said that Islamic Jihad warriors were standing firm in the war. "Your mujahideen sons were able to confront the most ferocious of crusader campaigns on an Islamic state. They have stood in the face of this onslaught for three years," Zarqawi said on the video.

"When the crusader enemy entered Iraq, he intended to control the Islamic nation and supported the Zionist state," said Zarqawi.

In the past, al-Zarqawi has made statements only through audiotapes posted on the Web.

Zarqawi Releases Video Tape

By Bill Roggio

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, al-Qaeda's commander in Iraq, has released "the first [videotape] to contain a 'message'... U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News." This is his first video without a mask and directly posted on internet, not released through Al Jazeera. Zarqawi "needed" to be seen.

The full transcript is not yet available, but MSNBC provides an excerpt:

"Your mujahideen sons were able to confront the most ferocious of crusader campaigns on a Muslim state. They have stood in the face of this onslaught for three years."

Walid Phares comments at MSNBC on Zarqawi's videotape - The decision on Iraq's new PM is obviously not what Zarqawi wanted... this is the third event in 3 days and linked strategically if not logistically.

Zarqawi's tape follows yesterday's multiple bombings of a scubadiving resort in Dahab, Egypt, and this weekend's release "State of Jihad" audiotape from Osama bin Laden.

Zarqawi Releases Video Tape

This is interesting. Z has been basically shelved by the Iraqi resistance because of the Jordan attack as well as mishandling the terrorism in Iraq. Now all of a sudden he shows up on the radar screen big time. Hmmmm, must ponder more.
