NEW ORLEANS - At first glance, the mayoral debate seemed like any other -- a forum in which the challengers focused most of their attacks on the incumbent, who spent much of his allotted time defending his record and trying to turn the problems that have plagued his administration into a positive in the name of experience.
But Monday night's New Orleans mayoral debate also reflected the unprecedented circumstances of this election, first and foremost by being broadcast on national television, on MSNBC.
Viewers outside New Orleans may not have recognized any of the seven candidates who took part except for Democratic Mayor Ray Nagin, but they knew the images shown on the screen of the African-American crowds chanting "Help" outside the city's convention center, the broken levees, and neighborhoods flooded to the rooftops.

Among the seven candidates who took part were the three leading contenders for the job: Nagin, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu (D), and businessman Ron Forman (D), head of the city's popular zoo and aquarium.

Being a local, both would be a disaster; Forman is a crony of Morial and Landrieu is... well typical leftist who hasn't seen a tax he didn't love. I saw the debate and only Peggy Wilson was impressive. She tried to emphasize private initiative (via tax cuts, etc) The other two are statists. Forman's slick commercials aside, the guy has no belief in free enterprise. Most of his so called success is intimately tied to government contracts and contacts.
Peggy Wilson was not impressive. I really don't know why she has a cult following on FR. Couhig is the best and most conservative candidate. He also won the debate hands down.
If only competence was a factor...
If a Republican makes the runoff and actually wins, that will be very bad news not only for Nagin, but Blanco and Mary Landrieu as well. Neither of them can win statewide without a heavy turnout in New Orleans.
from your previous posts, you are biased towards Couhig and that is fine; he would make an excellent choice. I admit I am biased towards Peggy because I have seen her stand up to Morial and other hacks. She is a believer in reduced taxes, and that is good. I would be happy to have her or Couhig. However, I just don't know if he will make the runoff. I don't think there is a "cult" following for Peggy. I think she would make a fine mayor and would be much better choice than any Democrat running.
His record isn't complicated. It clearly shows that he's incompetent. The only viable qualification that he can trot out is that he's chocolate. Sadly, that's all he'll need.
Forman's on Morial's crew? That seals the deal for me. I'd rather re-elect Nagin than give Morial a toehold in the office again.
RACE IS ALWAYS A HOT TOPIC IN POLITICS. IF YOU CANNOT WIN ON MERIT, IF YOU CANNOT GET THE JOB ON MERIT, IF YOU GET FIRED BECAUSE YOU ARE A BUM, IF YOU ARE LAZY, WHATEVER, JUST PLACE THE JESSIE RACE CARD. ALL WILL BE WELL AS THEY FALL ALL OVER THEMSELVES TO GIVE YOU FREE MONEY TO MAKE YOU HAPPY.
