US President George W. Bush and his wife Laura launched the annual White House Easter egg party today while managing to avoid any awkward moments with dozens of gay couples and their children who attended the outdoor event.
The Easter Egg Roll is a traditional all-American event held on the White House lawn each year since 1878, where kids push an egg with a giant wooden spoon, often with the proud president and his wife looking on.
But gay groups joined the queue for tickets - which were given out to families on a first-come, first served basis at the White House on Sunday.
Despite the opposition of conservative religious groups, Mr Bush and his wife Laura chose not to prevent the gay parents from attending.
The gay groups said their gesture was meant to make their presence felt in American society even though Mr Bush opposes legalising gay marriage.
There were no confrontations or tense moments as the opening of the event was closed to the public, with the president and his wife meeting invited guests, including families of White House staff and volunteers.
The gay parents also chose a discreet approach without any explicit protest, identifying themselves with rainbow-coloured flowers.
"Like other parents in this country, we want to give our children the best opportunities, to shower them with love, to teach them respect and a love for the rich and diverse traditions America has to offer them," said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director for the Family Pride Coalition.
Family Pride has been behind the calls for gay groups to crash the White House party which conservatives have condemned as an attempt to politicise a family event.
In damp, chilly weather, First Lady Laura Bush issued an official welcome before the Easter eggs were rolled across soggy grass outside the White House.
"In Washington, we know that spring has arrived when the White House lawn is filled with children for the Easter Egg Hunt," she said. "I want to thank all of the children here today who brought their parents with them."
The First Lady avoided commenting on the gay couples and before the event her office noted the rules: children of all ages are welcome but there must be at least one aged under seven in each group and no more than two adults in each group.
Go away.
You are very right. Some homosexuals choose that lifestyle with a partner of the same sex after they have had children from a heterosexual relationship. At least the child will have one normal parent, and learns more about the broader and less desirable aspects of society from having a gay parent. Not much can be done about that.
However, the artificial situation of sexually unproductive couples having their brooding selfishly fulfilled at the expence of the children is outrageous.
Being a homo may not be a choice for many, but homosexual couples having children is pure selfishness and unnatural.
Isn't it a bit ironic that gays want to participate in rites that originated in worshiping sexual reproduction?

It's a symptom of homosexuals wanting to be accepted as being normal. By immitate heterosexual norms, homos strive to be accepted as equal to normal men and women.
It's also worth noting that if they thought that their own sexuality and lifestyle was worthy of acceptance as equals, they would put their own 'ways' forward for acceptance, without having to have the trappings of marriage and children which are only natural for heterosexuals.
It's very telling that homosexuals try to 'deceive' normal people into accepting them as equal to them by copying them.
When a wolf wears a sheepskin, it doesn't turn the wolf into a sheep!
They need to indentify them selves don't they??
...That's because you actually love your child. These gay parents "own" a child (like a piece of furniture) to improve their political image.
If possible, could you post some links to some? Thanks.
This is bunk. There aren't any orphanages in the US, and straight families with good references have a hard time adopting, I know a family great in every respect (a Harvard man, no less) that did an international adoption, because they couldn't find an American baby.
Almostt all the foster care kids are older, abandoned after some years by their parents or removed because of abuse. And that is a big problem.
I had different experiences and nothing like the rabid activists that sounds like what your experiences have been.
Where should I go? Can't answer my question because as a freeper, I bring a different perspective and leaning and that's not exactly left, per se.
Two men gave birth to a baby? Wow! How does that work?
Not true. It's a ticketed event every year, open on a first come first served basis. There are no "special invitation, box seats" for this event.
It's a horrible form of child abuse.
Our neighbors in CA, both RNs - one of their girls was tomboy and the other only liked dresses. One liked softball, one liked gymnastics. The other family I know had at least 8 foster/adopted kids with disabilities including hearing loss - which is how I met them. The kids all spoke English/signed and also spoke Spanish. They left California for the midwest to find better educational opportunities. So yes, I spent quite a few hours with these people.
actually there are alot of studies that show children of homosexuals are more likely to be seuxally abused, use drugs, and even commit suicide.
It is NOT a good environment to raise a child.
I agree with you. And vehemently disagree with Sean Hannity on this one. But, you will see you need to watch your opinions on this one on FR!
I have a friend who has a PhD in Developmental Psychology. She said that her community has redefined homosexuality at a 'variation of normal'. I pointed out to her that if homosexuality ever became the norm, we would die out as a species. I asked her 'How does that even have a passing acquaintance with normal?'. No answer. The people in charge of these 'definitions' have sold out in the name of making everybody feel good about themselves, no matter how they act. Did you notice that Moussoaui's (sp) lawyers are now pleading a bad childhood for him???? No conscience.
