If I had to make a bet i would say it probably wasnt acid but Lye. Its a pretty common thing in the ghetto where I used to work in DC to keep a pot of Lye hot on the stove for intruders. One lady there always had her bucket of Lye and a baseball bat whith a nail in it for protection.
Hot Lye is pretty nasty stuff.
