Gingrich warns Republicans Americans want change
Reuters ^ | Sun Apr 16, 2006 11:36am ET10 | Newt Gingrich

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Republican Party is in serious danger of losing political ground in November elections if it does not enact reforms that eliminate waste and hold the federal bureaucracy to higher standards, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on Sunday.

"I think they're in very serious danger of having a very bad election this fall," Gingrich said on Fox News Sunday.

"You have to respect the right of the American people to say they want change," he said, criticizing the federal government's bungled efforts to cope with Hurricane Katrina and the Republican-led Congress' failure to enact immigration reforms.

"Are they going to learn some lessons and get their act together?" Gingrich asked.

Republicans currently outnumber Democrats 231-201 in the House and have a 55-44 advantage in the Senate.

The former representative from Georgia said the "debacle" over measures to strengthen U.S. borders and create a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants "was one more piece of the puzzle" for many voters who have lost faith in Republican leadership.

"The country absolutely wants control of the borders," Gingrich said. "The country absolutely wants us to insist that becoming an American citizen requires that you passed a test in English."

A well-designed guest worker program would have the support of 75 percent to 80 percent of the American people, he said.

With the federal budget deficit at record levels, Gingrich said Americans are losing patience with "pork," the discretionary spending earmarked to benefit local political constituencies.

"We were sent here to reform Washington, not to be co-opted by Washington," he said.

I not only agree with him but will probably be one of those horrible Republicans that do not have the energy to vote for those currently in office. What can I say...facts of life...

Although I don't agree with that, we are a free country and most will have to make the choice on what to do. Hopefully, you will change your mind in the next six months or so.

"Seems most of you are missing the big picture!"

As per my post #18, if you let just the males in and made the families stay behind I think they would be temporary workers only.

This has nothing to do with Guest Workers, penalties, etc. This is about preserving America and its culture/values. All immigration is good if controlled to at least preserve the language and culture. Quit arguing about the trivia that is brought up by the MSM. Our future is at stake...

If the current trend continues, we will become much like the Canadians...dual language, dual traffic signs, etc.

That is the least of my worries. I don't mind the dual stuff to me it is the socialism that is slowly taking over. In fact, I don't see it stopping and within twenty to thirty years well will be more like Europe and may be even part of the North American Union. Seeing Spanish and English is not that big a deal, it is everything else that comes with it.

"IMHO, a guest worker program should include male workers only and no families."

Oh, I agree with you. But the ACLU would come screaming at that like a skunk-bitten banchee.

No...it has nothing to do with temporary workers or NOT! That is the problem... You are looking at a micro-version of the problem and not seeing the macro-Problem... None of our current politicians are looking at anything except short-term solutions rather than the overall picture 50 years from now. Newt is one of the few with some foresight...

The Dems have no viable solutions to anything (apart from blaming Bush), and the only way we can lose is by warming our lazychairs come election day.

On the domestic front, we are losing right now and have been for 5 years. The moderate-at-best Republican congress fully cooperates with the moderate-at-best Republican in the White House, and between them they have been and are looting the trough like no one since LBJ.

Re-electing these thieves is continuing to lose. If we can't put in real conservatives, partisan gridlock when the Dems take the senate might be the next best thing.

Sorry, but with the dual culture problem comes the socialist values of the immigrants (no like the old days).... That is another part of the problem...

Newt is dead right. The Dems will probably win because the conservatives are pissed at the Republicans. I have to admit I am pretty disappointed myself. However, I will support my local Representative John Linder.

If you like Newt Gingrich I suggest you study closely how he literally squandered his House Leadership years by unconstrained megalomania and ego-centric behavior.

And, kind sir, is just for openers. We won't even begin to address his totally irresponsible (and flagrant) immorality in office...not to mention the gross shi*-canning of his previous wife.

The guy is a 14 caret fraud -- and just another self-serving political hack -- just a bit smarter than some -- but a bum, nevertheless.

Well, if the Democrats don't win, it will be a minor miracle! The current crop of Republicans have just about killed off their base with excess spending, no border controls, no port controls, etc. I for one - a very conservative Republican - am not just a bit angry!

Newt has grand ideas that if put to practical use would be great for America. This disregards his mortal/human problems.

[ Yes we do. And I like Newt. But Newt needs to suggest positive changes rather than focusing on what he thinks President Bush did wrong. ]

You mean like pushing(hard) for the importation of multi millions of proto democrats..
How did he get THAT idea?... BAD Newt, bad Newt..
Oh! and not vetoing or even threatening to veto a single bill..

"No...it has nothing to do with temporary workers or NOT! That is the problem..."

We may have gotten ourselves in to a situation where, after murdering 40 million kids over the last 3 1/2 decades, that we don't have the population to sustain growth. I don't know...

IF we need guest workers, then they should be exactly that. Not immigrants.

Well, you have a very good point there... We have been shooting ourselves in the foot for some time now (Liberals abound). That does not mean that we should immediate France and allow all immigrants to come to the US expecting amnesty. I'm starting to believe that maybe the Corporations do control (Congress) the US more than I want to admit.

Perhaps I'm biased but I remember a (almost) balanced budget and making the house follow the same laws as everybody else counting against his flaws. And honestly, Georgians knew he was ego-centric when we elected him.

I've also had the chance to interact with him a bit at town hall meetings and such before and after he left congress. I like him personally.

But your key point of squandering his house leadership years pretty much undeniable.

No, I was talking about Newt's speech last week where he said we should have kept far less troops in Iraq.

As an aside, has the President really failed to even threaten a veto? That's amazing.

Cooperations on the moderate side, and the moonbats for the far left. Somehow they made a temporary alliance.
