[ No, I was talking about Newt's speech last week where he said we should have kept far less troops in Iraq. ]

Its true.. Iraq SHOULD be being groomed as a Republic Not a Democracy.. Iraq is suited to be a republic.. A democracy being Mob Rule anyway, little difference between democracy and Sharia Law.. Both are very primitive tribal forms of government.. At least three States(Kurd, Sunni, Shia) would be better for Iraq.. forming a republic..

Newt is correct.. Iraq has become a diversion from the Mexican Border which is Americas REAL THREAT.. A threat to the American Republic not the American Democracy <<-which we are become more daily.. The threat OF DEMOCRACY BOTH in Iraq AND America is the real threat..

Is Bush a democrat for democracy OR a republican for a republic?.. -or- a republican for a democracy like other RINOs?.. You know the answer as well as I do.. as most/many on free republic do.. Iraq WAS and IS a diversion from the Mexican Border.. probably Afganistan too.. Brilliant diversion actually.. Not only did it take all/most eyes OFF the Mexican Border it removed anybody in America left with any balls to the middeast.. Removing any threat of revolution.. Quite smart really..

Do you really have a problem with a guest worker program that is carefully regulated and where the border is secure?

Yes, I do. They have babies. The babies are citizens. But mom and dad are second-class residents, not good enough to be citizens and not here long enough to learn the language or become part of the culture. So you have a whole bunch of Americans growing up ghettoized and resentful. No country has EVER had success with a guest worker program. They always end up with a resentful, sullen underclass. This is un-American and is a breeding ground for future democrats.

In actuality, our currrent system is a de-facto guest worker program and you should not expect a guest worker program to look a lot different in results.

If we need the workers, bring them here as candidate citizens, not guest workers. Have them learn English and Civics. Make them citizens. But do not create an underclass, which is what a guest-worker program is. America was built on immigrants doing scut work--and they turn out to be great Americans when you give them a stake in the social contract. We should not turn our back on that history.

The Democrats have no solutions, so it is going to be the Republican voter who stays at home that will doom the election for us.

Or, perhaps, the Republican leadership. Put the real blame where it belongs.

Perhaps, but the majority of people I have met and worked with have at least some college education, and frequently have a degree. I realize they may not be typical 'guest workers', but this is a specialized field.

IMHO, the sycophants are much worse. They've allowed the Republican Party to drift, trot, now GALLOP to the left.

The fearmonger still works with the sycophants. It stopped working with me, and some other independent minded Republicans a couple of years ago. The line in the sand has been drawn, and if the spineless, gonad-less Republicans cross it, then they lose my vote...period...end of statement.

I suggest that the Republicans may indeed lose control of the House and the Senate...but if that is what it takes to smack them silly, then so be it.

All I have to say is Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Leader Harry Reid, Charlie Rangel over Ways and Means, John Conyers over the Judicial Committe in the House, Sheila Jackson Lee over immigration in the House. As bad as some of the Republicans are, all of the dems are worse...

But Newt needs to suggest positive changes rather than focusing on what he thinks President Bush did wrong.

A person (Bush) has to acknowledge doing something wrong before they will consider doing something else.

However the Bush guest worker program leads to citizen which is just an amnesty, and isn't a GUEST workers program.

This is one thing I'm somewhat adamant about. No citizenship for illegals. What would be the treatment of someone here illegally and deported. They would never be eligible for a green card. Only if you happen to already be here can you be illegal and still get a green card. This completely undermines the law. Also, I don't believe anyone here illegally has any reasonable expectation of citizenship anyway. A 'path to citizenship' is unnecessary and irrelevant to the whole topic of any kind of legalization.

Citizenship should be valued...

Exactly. Citizenship should be valued. Our glorious leaders want to give it out like candy to people who have already rejected following the rules required to attain it.

If only the GOP would pass substantial border sealing legislation (a 10-year plan to fence/wall the southern border) along with a proposal to extend the tax cuts, they might be able to skate thru the '06 elections without much loss.

Save the hard stuff, like plans to stop the automatic "anchor baby's" and cuts (big reductions) in growing entitlements, for after the Nov. elections.

Yeah, it might be a wussy way out, but it makes sense to let the candidates for '08Prez and 08 Congress to fight it out since they will be the ones who live or die by such proposals.

As for the current illegal alien flood, the GOP should at least pass a law this year which allows (or mandates)states to incarcerate all illegal aliens who commit a crime, or otherwise violate US laws.

Congress must also immediately mandate severe penalties for any businessman, homeowner, or school which knowingly hires or codifies an illegal alien.

ALSO, make yearly increasing penalties for illegal aliens from 06 thru 2012. For example, if caught in the US in 06, the penalty is immediate deportation plus a $5,000 fine if they ever want to apply for legal entry or status.

If they are caught in 07, immediate deportation plus a $10,000 fine for future legal papers PLUS they must wait 10 years before applying.

For 08, deportation plus 15 year wait before applying for legal US entry PLUS a $25,000 fine.

Of course, some might see these penalties as too severe, or the fines too much, but the idea to INCREASE penalties each coming year makes a lot of sense to me.

But Newt needs to suggest positive changes

Newt has that 'I wanna be President' gleam in his eye, and subsequently is trying to appear "reasonably moderate' to the lamestream press by making all these wussy suggestions.

The only thing he's doing, however, is making himself look weak and compromising, EXACTLY the opposite of what he must do in order to be a successful candidate.

Do you really have a problem with a guest worker program that is carefully regulated ...?

I certainly do, and I presume most Freepers do also, DEPENDING on the definition of "guest worker".

For example, I have NO problem with a future guest worker plan, as long as the guest workers ARE NOT the illegals who are currently living in the US.

As far as I'm concerned, I will never support any legislation which does not mandate that illegals RETURN to their native country in order to apply for entry.

The problem with saying you "agree" with a guest worker program lies in the fact that everyone has a different definition as to who would be eligible for that program.

MEMO TO NEWT:

Newt, I loved ya for your Congressional leadership as House GOP Leader...

But you blew your cred when you recently appeared with the witch (aka Hillary Clinton regarding your "Health Care Reform" tour.)

Smart and tough...

By pandering to Illegal Immigrants, Antiwar Protesters, and governments that hate us. That is the Democratic strategy.
