AUGUSTA, Maine - Two registered sex offenders were fatally shot in their homes Sunday morning, prompting the state to take down the Maine Sex Offender Registry Web site.

State police said the site, which contains the photos, names and addresses of more than 2,200 registered sex offenders, was taken off-line as a precaution.

Investigators said a 19-year-old Canadian man described as "a person of interest" in the case shot himself in a Boston bus station after he was cornered by police later Sunday.

Stephen A. Marshall was in critical condition at Boston Medical Center, a spokesman said.

The pickup truck Marshall was driving was spotted leaving one of the victim's homes after the shooting, Maine state police said. They alerted authorities in Boston after discovering the vehicle abandoned and bullets linked to Marshall in the bathroom of a bus station, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The shooting victims were identified as Joseph L. Gray, 57, of Milo, and William Elliott, 24, of Corinth.

Back to protecting the predators instead of the citizens.

I don't think we should have the sex offender list, but only because they ought to still be in jail as long as the state considers them a threat to society.

That's unusual. Why'd he come down here to kill? There must be more to the story like maybe he'd been looking for them for a long time.

Give me a minute to work up some kind of sympathy for the 'murder victims'.

Sorry...can't seem to do it.

So, because something is used in the commission of a crime, we ban it? What's next?

You never know with the MSM. While there are many of the classic middle-aged men who prey on 10 year old types, there are also people on these lists who were 18 years old with 16 year old girlfriends (and no, not me), who are then convicted for statutory rape (or something like that). Often the distinction is lost with a one-size-fits-all type list.

But in this case, it will interesting to find out what the real story is.

I guess law enforcement figures that the perp didn't know how to save a web page on his hard drive.

Ahhh...brilliant plan. Park your truck in the driveway...pop a cap...drive away. Probably left the motor running too.

The other story linked here says that Marshall's family lives in Maine, although he moved to Canada. I'm wondering if he may have been a victim of these predators, possibly.

I'm afraid to even think about it.
We don't have the death penalty up here except for the weapon. If a gun is used for a homicide the weapon is destroyed. Family members of the murder victim can attend the execution of the weapon.

2200 sex offenders in Maine, I mean, that state has a relatively low population I would think, looked it up, about 1.25 million.

It seems like a high figure.

You are right about "one sized fits all list".

In NY sex offenders are classified by the severity of the crime. Only those at level 3 are put on the publicly available website. A kid who was convicted on the technicality of having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend wouldn't make that list.

(I can't believe I just found something the State of New York does RIGHT)

"...as the state considers them a threat to society."

therein lies the problem. We rely on Gov't. Good old fashioned common sense justice is what we need these days.

Reading this link will give you a clue as to why:

I propose a compromise:

Any sex offender who doesn't want his (or her, I suppose) name on a Meagan's Law data base can opt to stay in prison...
