2008 presidential hopeful George Allen urged his Senate colleagues on Sunday to "put the pedal to the metal" on immigration reform and "first and foremost, secure the borders."
"[For] the people out there in the real world . . . this is a hot issue," Sen. Allen told CBS's "Face the Nation." "I think the Senate needs to put the pedal to the metal, get moving, make decisions and first and foremost, secure the borders."
On some of the amnesty bills currently before Congress, Allen said: "We should not reward illegal behavior because all you'll get is more illegal behavior."
Asked if Republican-controlled Congress would "be hurt" by further inaction on illegal immigration, Allen said: "I think Republicans need to stand up for the rule of law. I think Republicans need to stand up for securing our borders. And I think Republicans - and all people - ought to look at history."
The Virginia GOP'er noted that in 1986, amnesty was provided to the 3 million illegals then in the country.
"Now we have approximately 11 million in the country illegally," he added. "Twenty years from now we're going to have 20 million.
"We need to do this right, do it properly and learn from history."
Hopefully, the senate will follow through.
It pays to keep track of what politicians say and do, doesn't it?
I think its over 20 million, since the methodlogy being used to measure is so flawed.
A Big part of the problem is that guys like Tom Tancredo and the Minuiteman project also continue to cite the false figure of 11 million, if Tancredo and the rest of them would stop using the wrong number they have been mislead to believe and start using better numbers, it would make our case easier.
To show you how screwed up this is, the 11 million number is supposed to be 1/3 of all immigrants, the estimate for legal immigrants is 23 million.
Tell me, in this country of almost 300 million, do you really believe there are only 23 million LEGAL immigrants total?

George Allen is just tickling our ears with this latest rhetoric. He can't be serious.
Oops. No, pro-life. He can also claim to be a cowboy. Did I hear he chews tobacco?
He says no.
As a senator and also has a governor he had perfect pro-life records.
However, back in 92 when he was in the house, he had a single pro-abortion vote.
As of August last year, he came out against stem cell research, but his rhetoric doesn't sound pro-life even if his record is solid pro-life.
Allen supports abortion in the earliest stages of the first trimester. After brainwaves and a heartbeat, then apparently the right to life kicks in.
Diddo. The Hildabeast will go down BIG TIME with this scenerio.
George Allen has moved to the right on border defense. He was wishy washy before. I can only hope he got an earful from constituents and saw these illegal alien marches for what they are. A DAMN DISGRACE and illegal alien ARROGANCE PUSHINESS at it's worst
I don't think a pro-choice Republican can win in the primaries. I hope a pro-choice Republican can't win in the primaries.
As for securing the border, he's got a to do a whole lot more than make a speech about it.
He was for it, before he was against it.
Or in the least has been wishy-washy on the issue.
Allen will say anything to get elected--John Kerry-esque.
And nationally, Allen's name ID is barely a blip on the radar.
Just ask the man on the street. Most folks I've talked to never heard of him.
I miswrote on the first point. But as for that, it is called traking a position. But, as you say, he now has to do something. In the senatteit is hard to do anything.
I agree, Securing the border must be the first step.
Allen is not going to do anything until next year. A lot depends on what happens in November. Remember it took Reagan twelve years to build a faction in the Republican Party. But Allen has to be bold enough to offer a consistent;y conservative program. It will help him even in the Senate.

Bear Stearns estimates over 20 million.
