. . . But the facts of this case have given the story legs, and the running is far from finished.
Everyone has a team to root for here, everyone has a dawg in the fight, as they like to say in North Carolina. Without regard for the flimsy evidence that has emerged, everyone can take a side, dig a trench, and shout across the battlefield until there is only muddled, indistinguishable noise.
So what do we have? . . . There will eventually be a trial of some sort, and there should be, because there was a crime committed. It was either the crime of rape or the crime of falsely accusing someone of a felony. One or the other, although this story will never end with a neat, undisputed conclusion.
It will end with a bunch of lawyers making a bunch of money and with the futures of those involved hinging on the two most important words in our judicial system: jury selection.
Best case scenario, the incident will lead schools to take a hard look at the excesses of all students. . . . Best case, it will make students think twice before doing something really stupid, although alcohol and midnight will continue to mix badly. Whether a rape occurred in this case or not, it will raise awareness of the heinous crime itself, maybe prevent some in the future.
That's the best that can be hoped. Nothing else. Because nothing good happened at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd. on the night of March 13. Nothing that anyone on either side can possibly defend.

With the release of the tape in which the policeman at Kroger's says she's passed out drunk, I suppose they had to counteract this to keep the bash the team on track. Totally disgusting how it's open season on these boys but noooooooo, don't bash the accuser. GAG.
At NC Central University, where there was a meeting of the president of Duke, the Durham mayor, and "black leaders" this morning. It's also where the accuser was attending college.
Also, they note the lack of DNA evidence, and the new info about the police officers observations that the woman was likely drunk.
NCCU chancellor: blah blah blah, dialogue, awareness, tensions, working together, tolerance, a "community of one", etc.
Duke Pres: blah blah blah, mutual support, working together, blah.
Durham mayor: City will be a better community, continue dialogue, stronger, thanks to leaders, we will bring a just conclusion, blah blah blah.
Questions:
What did you talk about this morning?
General racial tensions in Durham.
If DA doesn't indict, how will this inflame portions of community calling for "justice".
We'll wait on the DA's report.
cutaway
Essentially, no new information.
We don't give a crap about the boys. We do care about the "lady". We do support the investigation. We are determined to indict the boys. It's in the best interest of the reputations of both Duke and NCC. Therefore, we must hang all this on the boys. And they need to take it like a "man".
Ergo, let's make martyrs of the boys. One day they can say they saved DUKE AND NCC FROM A FATE WORSE THAN DEATH -- lack of donors to the institutions.
"Our jobs are at stake." The boys are "privileged" so they have "options". The "lady" has no options, and plus there might be a race riot if we look into "her". Therefore, occam's razor suggests they are guilty.
"This decision is good FOR THE COMMON CAUSE. We are taking something from you for the common good."
Exactly.
Yes, I'm much more aware of black racism than I was before.
It's about the money. Not right. Not wrong. Not justice.
What a mockery of "edukashion".
What these pointy-headed idiots have just done is shot themselves in the foot. One foot. The other foot isn't necessary. They obviously have no idea what they've "signed" onto. Daniel Webster and the Devil comes to mind. And these folks aren't being Daniel Webster.
What they've just "subliminally" asserted is.. that women are not equals in the court of law nor public opinion. Women are "less" than equal. That males must always be "over" women because women can't stand up on their own two feet.
Idjits.
You named it correctly....it's BLACK racism. I'm sick to death of their using the victim crutch for support. They refuse to consider the facts of anything if it involves a black "sister" or "brother".
You little dickens, you! How are you?
The bottom line here:
When you are going to hire a slutty stripper/whore, have a criminal background check run, get references from the local public health clinic and make sure she signs a waiver, notarized and videotaped in the presence of her attorney.
Does anyone else think that $800 for a 4 minute dance is a bit high priced? I have been reading that the ladies only danced for about 4 minutes, then went into the bathroom together for 27 minutes. Then the accuser passed out, etc. $800 sounds like something else was being delivered.
Silly question: What credentials does she have in the "dancing" part?
Isn't it ironic that the Left is now doing to the "Duke Boys" exactly what they insisted the system did to the "Scottsboro Boys" so many years ago, with the skin colors reversed?
In that case, one of the women came forward and said the other woman had fabricated the rape claim.
Will "Kim" come forward here and testify that the other stripper made the whole thing up?
They probably didn't have DNA evidence methods back then.
The lack of DNA evidence to back up the accusations here, kills the DA's case, other than one for false accustion of a felony, in my mind.
I have my doubts as to whether a Durham jury would necessarily see this case in exactly the same way as you.
THE TRIALS OF "THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS"
Since the 70s have socialists been whinging that now Whites need to sit "at the back of the bus" and feminists, that it was time for men to experience what women through 4,000 years of history have felt.
Bcrap on both. But you are right. The similarities of this Duke/Durham case and the trial of the Scottsboro Boys.. is eerie. Like someone taking the outline script of the Scottsboro boys and attempting to weave surreality into this time and day. Just as then.
If this thing goes to trial, getting a venue change is the first job of the defense attorney. This thing would be a reverse Rodney King in a heartbeat, only it would later get thrown out on appeal, otherwise.
I don't want to sound crude here, but why don't they investigate the other dancer "Kim" who was in the bathroom with the "victim" for 27 minutes? What went on in there? Perhaps she was sexually assaulted by the female...
Why did the Associated Press have to use the Freedom of Information Act to gain access to that recording of the police office telling that the "victim" was "passed out drunk"? Why wasn't this released automatically by the Durham Police? Is this really a coverup by the DA? What the heck is going on here?
