Duke lacrosse case is sure to raise awareness
The Mercury News ^ | Thu, Apr. 13, 2006 | BOB FORD

. . . But the facts of this case have given the story legs, and the running is far from finished.

Everyone has a team to root for here, everyone has a dawg in the fight, as they like to say in North Carolina. Without regard for the flimsy evidence that has emerged, everyone can take a side, dig a trench, and shout across the battlefield until there is only muddled, indistinguishable noise.

So what do we have? . . . There will eventually be a trial of some sort, and there should be, because there was a crime committed. It was either the crime of rape or the crime of falsely accusing someone of a felony. One or the other, although this story will never end with a neat, undisputed conclusion.

It will end with a bunch of lawyers making a bunch of money and with the futures of those involved hinging on the two most important words in our judicial system: jury selection.

Best case scenario, the incident will lead schools to take a hard look at the excesses of all students. . . . Best case, it will make students think twice before doing something really stupid, although alcohol and midnight will continue to mix badly. Whether a rape occurred in this case or not, it will raise awareness of the heinous crime itself, maybe prevent some in the future.

That's the best that can be hoped. Nothing else. Because nothing good happened at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd. on the night of March 13. Nothing that anyone on either side can possibly defend.

I thought this was a reasonably even-handed summary of the case, as even as we're likely to see in the Old Media. Though I will say, from what I've seen, I'd lean towards "the crime of falsely accusing someone of a felony" side of things.

"Whether a rape occurred in this case or not, it will raise awareness of the heinous crime itself, maybe prevent some in the future."

Hopefully it will do the same for the heinous crime of false accusation of rape.

Also, please use the DUKELAX keyword for these stories. That's now the one that seems to capture the most items on this.

And, they canceled the lacrosse season. I get the feeling if this were the Duke basketball team, they'd be playing an entire season.

Perhaps so, but in general, Coach K seems to run a pretty tight ship. I believe his graduation rates are much higher than NCAA averages. And I'm no Duke fan.

Duke lacrosse case is sure to raise awareness

That's the most important thing. Whether or not it's actually true is completely immaterial.

I agree with you about coach K, however with the canceling of a season it all comes down to money. And, Duke basketball brings in MILLIONS.

Now, how much do you think the lacrosse team brings in?

At minimum, I don't think there would have been the rush to judgement, by the Duke president, as there has been in this case.

My big problem with the whole thing is the way this was tried in the media and by the insufferably politically correct Usual Suspects on and off the Duke campus in the first week, with a finding that the team was "guilty" of rape. A "verdict" that was immediately affirmed by the university president.

Biggest non-story of recent vintage! If you don't want to expose yourself to public humiliation, physical manipulation, sexual leering and touching, then don't sign on to strip naked at a college party!

If you don't want to be accused of rape by some mental case stripper, don't invite them to your party.

Ssssshhhhheeeeessssshhhhh!

So many unanwered questions regarding the woman. Last night they played a 911 tape, the officer said she was passed out drunk. Why no blood test to make sure she wasn't given ruffies or any other drugs? If she were that drunk she easily could have broken nails falling in the bathroom. Isn't it possible she had sex either before or after the party? The screamming mimis on tv are out of control, I doubt they will apologize after its all said and done. Instead they will make excuses for this girls lies because shes black and the boys are white. The sad thing is there will be alot of DISAPPOINTED people when it comes out that she WASN'T raped.

Oh, for crying out loud. It's a "get" the boys presser.

"We are not going to judge the profession the lady is in"... BUT judge the boys, hoo-yeah. Crap.

I'm not familiar with Mr. Ford's writing style in general, but gauging from this article, he should find another profession that doesn't involve the use of pencils and paper.
