DURHAM, N.C. -- A small group of boosters and others close to the Duke University lacrosse team has hired President Clinton's former lawyer as part of an aggressive public relations effort to argue that the players did not sexually assault a woman at an off-campus party.

Bob Bennett, a former federal prosecutor and Washington attorney who represented Clinton in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case, is serving as a spokesman for a group calling itself the Committee for Fairness to Duke Families.

They attend Duke. They can AFFORD HIM.

The point is, only guilty people, like Clinton, hire him.

Can you explain how retaining competent legal counsel is an admission of guilt?

How much more guilty does that make you look?

I am having a hard time hearing the whole rationale that "just because there's no DNA doesn't mean a rape didn't happen." If that's the case....why are men accused of rape getting out of prison SOLELY because DNA results come back negative? Shouldn't those prisoners, based on this DA's rationale, still be incarcerated despite the fact that DNA evidence doesn't match?

His claim to fame is representing the Guilty "Clinton". Enough said.

Duke has a reputation to maintain and they will not let this two-bits DA drag their university's good name through the mud as he has done.

Unfortunately, the Duke administration, faculty and students have been hammering the athletes as well. Duke is a very small school yet I've seen tons of students marching against the athletes.

After this pitiful display, I don't know why any non-basketball male athlete would ever even think of attending Duke. If they school and the students hate their athletes that much then why do they even field the teams?

And you are correct!!!!

If you were accused of killing your ex-wife and didn't do it, if you hired Johnny Cokring then everyone is going to think you did!

I would wait until the prosecutor filed charges before hiring an attorney, especially since the DNA tests came back negative.

These parents are wasting their time and money at this point. The prosecutor isn't going to get an indictment on the evidence he currntly has. Bennett is cetainly not motivated to resolve this case quickly.

Just tell the cops to leave you alone unless they have an arrest warrant or search warrant.

This is the exact reason you do not talk to the cops or volunteer any information. If you didn't do anything wrong or didn't see a crime committed, there is no reason for them to question you.

You talk to them and the next thing that might happen is you get put into the same position as Scooter Libby. They'll try to hang some sort of 'false statement' charge on you; then your troubles will be just be beginning when you did nothing wrong.

If I was one of those players, I would have simply told the cops, "I don't have any helpful informatin because I didn't see anything going on related to the allegations. That being the case, this conversation is over. Goodbye."

Cops will lie to you about what others might have said in order to get you to keep talking. When they do that, just tell them you don't know anything about what others may or may not have said.

Some people will say that this approach to dealing with the cops may make you look guilty. No it won't. It will just save you a lot of problems and a ton of money in legal bills.

If this isn't an admission of guilt I don't know what it.

Your apparently don't know what is.....this is a high profile case where if you don't have a sharp lawyer...you can be hung out to dry.. I suspect the boys hired a stripper who agreed to do a few tricks for X dollars....they being drunk, as well as at the age everytime they blink their eyes get an erection....were highly upset that she showed up drunk....and then they knew that suing for "specific performance" probably wouldn't do much good. I am amazed by the folks on this forum who suggest suing the women for defamation of character or like charges.....wake up...what the hell good would that do...she wouldn't be doing what she was doing if she had any money. All that said....she may be a good girl and I hope she comes clean and admits what anyone with half a brain has figured out is the truth..

Maybe not all.

If some get charged and can't make bail he might bargain...let's just say someone else, like this support group, will pay that person's bail.

The DA has signaled he's ready to go to the mattresses over this case...

The DA is bluffing. Which three of the 40 something players is he going to charge? She ID's one over a week later from a picture. You think any jury is going to believe that? She should have b een ablt to ID the guy the very next day.

Sorry, you need legal advice right from the start, if you are in any way suspected of a crime, or if you are involved with knowledge of a crime being committed. You need someone on your side immediately, telling you what to do and what not to do, what to say, and what not to say. You need someone who will stand up for your rights, someone to fight for you. You cannot afford to wait, before hiring an attorney. The longer you wait, the harder it is to excruciate yourself from anything incriminating.

"She ID's one over a week later from a picture. You think any jury is going to believe that?"

If it is the one who made the e-mail, a tough decision. The e-mail paints him odious, but his picture was on the web too, so maybe he'd be the obvious fake pick.

LOL!!!!....just when most of us were sure of their "innocence" they go ahead and get a Clinton CYA lawyer......

but realistically, a show of force needs to be evident....it worked in the Bryant case......

If Bennett can get all those Dookies from jumping up and down at the BB games, I'll back him all the way.

felt wealthy if I could afford a $1.50 pizza - I remember writing a $10 check for cash and feeling rich.

What years are we talking about and how much is that in current dollars?
