Clinton: "Too Much Happy Talk" on Economy [Barfer]
Chicago Tribune/KVET ^ | April 12, 2006

Apr. 12--Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called Tuesday for a new national economic strategy that combines fiscal discipline with broad health-care reforms, a rebuilding of the nation's public works and innovation in such fields as energy research to foster success for the middle class.

Clinton (D-N.Y.), widely regarded as the early front-runner for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, appeared before more than 3,000 people attending the 78th annual dinner meeting of the Economic Club of Chicago. She clearly questioned the Bush administration's tax and budget priorities, although she did not mention the president by name.

"I suggest that we agree on the need for an economic strategy that keeps our economy growing and creating good jobs in the face of new competition, and that we strengthen the middle class--which is, after all, the engine of our growth and the backbone of our democracy," said the former first lady, who was born in Chicago and grew up in Park Ridge.

"The truth is, we can't be secure without a strong economy and we can't sustain our deepest values without an economy that rewards hard work," she said. "Too much that comes out of Washington these days is either defeatist, denials or happy talk."

Clinton aides said her speech was aimed at discussing ideas rather than sounding a purely partisan tone. At the same time, she echoed several themes consistent with past Democratic complaints that while the nation's economy may appear buoyant to some, it has failed to lift low- and middle-class taxpayers.

But she decried an increase in partisanship that she said has served to lessen the importance of public-private partnerships. And she took a shot at Bush's efforts to make permanent the tax cuts he contends are responsible for an improved economy.

"Tax cuts alone cannot secure the middle class.

If she had her way the government would have its little grubby hands in everything and we would be like France with near 13% unemployed.

Clinton: "Too Much Happy Talk" on Economy [Barfer]

well, we know where she gets her material, at least. Ellen Goodman called President Reagan "Mr. Happy Talk" in the mid '80's.

They love to recycle old material, those leftists.

The main problem with the economy is that the government is spending like drunken sailors. Hillary's solution involves tapping more kegs of rum in the ship's cargo hold.

Since it's obvious neither diplomacy or the facts will work with H-Rod.

So, in In Hoc humble opinion, she needs a good Singapore caneing, then deportation to the socialist "paradise" of her choice.

Almost 3 years of economic expansion, tax receipts at an all time high and solid job growth combined with higher average wages and increased home ownership.

I don't get it.

Dems want to roll back the tax cuts which is bad and will only push some of that burden back on to the poor who use a lot of services but don't pay for them... ...wait, maybe that's a good thing. Use what you pay for....nevermind....

Let's socialize medicine which will only drive up costs and create a tiered system where the really rich opt out and get their own care while the middle class and poor are stuck in a system that provides poor services.

Go Hillary!!!!!

PUKE

More empty platitudes from the Senate Screecher .
The only thing she left out was finding a cure for the common cold and eradicating the heartbreak of static cling.

Well Hillary has one point. In her senate campaign she promised to turn around the economy of upstate NY. As a current resident of said, I think she should stop the happy talk and diversion to issues outside her constiuents needs and yes---- deliver. or else stop talking about anything else which she she also is incompentent to address.

Speaking of economic "happy talk" brings this to mind.

The first week of August 2002 the Commerce Department reported the national economy was worse than anticipated. Hidden in the morass of statistics, there was proof that the Clinton administration grossly overestimated the strength of the economy leading up to the 2000 election.

If the true economic condition was reported, that the economy was slowing and headed for recession this would have hampered VP Gore's election chances.

Talk about economic "happy talk"!

Just as when other organizations suffered from corrupt CEO's the real economic condition was reported and numbers amended afterwards.
