A Darwinian View of Immigration
By Lowell Ponte
FrontPageMagazine.com | April 12, 2006

"All these immigration bills are essentially the same,” the wise man told me. “None are intended to stop illegal immigration. Our restrictions are designed merely to be filters to weed out the weak, lazy and stupid from getting into the U.S. Those who get through will be the fittest, and they will bring America the best genetic stock as new citizens.”

This columnist was first to identify the paradox that today’s liberals demand that Darwinian evolution be taught in our public school classrooms but insist that real Darwinian competition – dodge ball, score keeping, the very idea of winners and losers – be banished from the playgrounds of those same schools. Do they believe that Charles Darwin, the founder of evolutionary theory, was right or not?

I occasionally interview a deep but cynical thinker. Because he prefers to remain anonymous, I call him “The Darwinian.” Quoted above and hereafter, this is his take on current events. His opinions are his own, not necessarily those of this columnist nor of Front Page Magazine, but they provide food for thought concerning today’s most widely discussed issue, immigration.

“At America’s southern border we, in effect, have invisible signs like those at the rides at Disneyland that say ‘You must be this tall to go on this ride,’” he told me. “Those who are strong, smart, tough and determined enough to climb the fence, cross the desert or river, or pay the best Coyote human smugglers and are able to evade the Migras [immigration officers] will survive until the next amnesty and be given citizenship. And this survival of the fittest will, in the long run, benefit the United States.”

But aren’t such illegals a drain on our welfare and other social services?

“Of course, but only in the short run,” The Darwinian replied. “Most come with a strong work ethic, devout faith, and stronger family values than most liberal Americans. They bring a transfusion of values, ethics and passion that have been hemorrhaging away in America. And without this influx the United States would be in the same demographic decline, unable to reproduce itself, as Europe and Japan are. We need fresh blood and these vigorous genes to renew America, as has happened many times in the past.”

But wouldn’t legal immigration be better?

“No,” replied the Darwinian. “The gauntlet we have now, and that will continue with its bar raised in the bills now before Congress, provides a better test of fitness than arbitrary bureaucratic standards of who should get in. Bureaucrats approve those who are docile and obedient. Natural selection rewards those who are the toughest, which often means those willing to bend and break the rules.

“True enough,” he continued, “today’s barriers let lawbreakers slip through – indeed, turn the undocumented immigrants into law breakers. But the law they’re breaking is largely a product of racial and economic discrimination designed to protect the status and jobs of those already here, to protect the lazy and comfortable from Darwinian competition. To the degree that competition has been reduced by our politicized immigration laws, the United States has violated its own ideal as a capitalist nation.

“Free market competition,” he continued, “is just Darwinian evolution operating economically. It’s rightly been called Bio-nomics, natural economics. This is why the so-called conservationists who support socialism and the Democratic Party are dishonest. Socialism is phony, unnatural economics that leads to the extinction of species.

“Those who hide behind laws, including immigration laws, to avoid such competition are committing slow suicide, growing too fat and lazy to survive,” said The Darwinian. “In the long run you can no more outlaw the law of supply and demand than you can outlaw the law of gravity. And there’s a big supply of cheaper labor just across the border.

“Organized labor is a monopolist attempt to outlaw free market competition,” he continued. “Look at how General Motors, controlled and bled white by its labor unions, is now dying because it has become too weak to stand against competitors. Such unions have also tried to stop immigration, knowing it would undercut the wages unions extort. But if they win, the whole United States will eventually be weakened as General Motors now is. And unions hurt us all as consumers who must pay unnaturally higher prices.”

So, I asked, should we allow an unregulated flood of immigrants to drive American wages down to Third World levels?

“We do regulate the flow,” laughed The Darwinian. “We just do it by raising or lowering the amount of enforcement at the border. The cream of the immigrants floats to the top of this tide, so we keep the barrier high enough that it’s mostly the cream that gets in. Do you think it’s an accident that President Bill Clinton’s administration virtually ordered the Border Patrol to ease its enforcement so he could register a million newly-legalized – and in 10,000 cases felonious – voters for the 1996 election? Or that even the toughest proposed immigration law before Congress right now would build only 698 miles of fence on a 2,000 mile border?

“It’s obvious that powerful interest groups, left and right, want this flow of illegal immigrants. Businesses want more labor competition to hold down wages. Democratic leaders expect that these illegals will disproportionately become Democrat voters and restore power to the Left. The Roman Catholic Bishops see these immigrants as increasing the power of the Catholic Church. Would Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony really be so encouraging to illegals if America were a predominately Catholic country being flooded with illegal Protestant immigrants? I don’t think so.”

So you would not build a Wall of China on America’s southern border to stop this human flood?

“I don’t want to stop Hispanic workers – but we also face the threat of terrorists with suitcase nuclear weapons, nerve gas and other horrific arms. We already allow vast amounts of chemical weaponry to cross the border in the form of illicit drugs from the narco-democracy of Mexico that take a monstrous toll on our citizens.

“But I recognize,” he continued, “that terrorist megaweapons would arrive with the backing of wealthy entities such as Al Qaeda or Iran who could get them over or around any barrier on the southern border. If you have tens of millions of dollars, as Osama bin Laden or Iran do, it’s not that hard to find a bribable dock worker or Border Patrolman or other security personnel. You can imagine the sales pitch to an INS official: ‘You can take this half-million dollar bribe, or you can wind up mysteriously dead.’

“And the U.S. also has three huge seacoasts, an even longer and thinly-controlled border with Canada, and many more paths through which wealthy terrorists could enter,” The Darwinist said. “As you quoted one expert on the ports issue recently, Lowell, if the U.S. can’t stop tons of drugs, why do we think we could stop a few pounds of Plutonium? Sadly, a 50-foot high border wall would not protect us from such terrorism. We have thousands more miles of border, and far less reliable agents guarding us, than Israel does.”

“By the way,” he added, “have you noticed how crazy Iran is? They just threatened us with their network of international terrorists if we took steps to dismantle their nuclear weapons program. But their ability to use terrorists as a nuclear delivery system is precisely why we are justified in de-fanging their nuclear program no matter what the risk or cost. We cannot risk the next 9-11 attack in Manhattan coming from terrorists with nuclear weapons. The Iranian Islamofascist rulers themselves, in other words, have given the perfect rationale for attacking them immediately.”

But isn’t Mexico hurting itself by suffering a brain drain through all this immigration? Aren’t they destroying their own future by driving out their best and brightest?

“In the long run, yes,” replied The Darwinist. “We’re almost literally sucking Mexico’s brains out, leaving mostly the dregs. But by encouraging a mass exodus to the United States, Mexico in the short run gains a river of revenue – as much as $20 billion each year in remittances sent back home by those who went to work in the U.S. This makes exporting its workers one of Mexico’s most lucrative enterprises, right up there with its exports of oil and illicit drugs.

“Mexico also sells oil and drugs in a quasi-colonial symbiosis with the United States, depending on us to buy their products and workers,” he said. “The Mexicans who remain tend to be those without the gumption or brains to make their way north into the U.S. Those who stay provide Mexico’s ruling elite with a docile, servile class of peons.

“Mexico’s tiny ruling class is happy with the current feudal system that keeps them wealthy and on top,” he said. “It’s very much like Communist Fidel Castro’s Cuba, which also keeps its small ruling elite wealthy by being the coercive pimp exploiting its prostituted, oppressed people.

“Those who come illegally to the U.S. are mostly poor rural people, but they also tend to be the citizens most dissatisfied with Mexico – and hence its most potentially troublesome citizens,” he continued. “Prodding them to trek north provides a safety valve by removing them both as a burden on Mexican government services and as potential political revolutionaries who might try to change the government. Incidentally, in Mexico it is a crime for any non-citizen to participate in political activities such as flag-waving protests.”

“Americans widely believe that, like the brown beret activists of MEChA, Mexico wants to reclaim the Southwest United States as Mexican territory,” said The Darwinian. “But if you were part of Mexico’s feudal ruling elite, would you risk bringing these tough Mexican-Americans and all the Yanquis in these territories back inside your borders?

“This would precipitate a successful violent revolution against today’s Mexican rulers almost overnight,” he laughed. “These illegals came north to escape the failed society of Mexico, and no sane person among them wants to re-create or re-impose Mexico and its primitive society here.

“MEChA might fantasize about restoring their mythical ‘Aztlan’ that never was,” The Darwin said. “The Aztecs almost never raided as far north as today’s U.S. border. But I’d guess that nothing is more frightening to Mexico’s current rulers. Anyway, why foment revolution in the U.S. when the wealth of the United States is already pouring into Mexico via remittances and oil money?”

So, I asked, you don’t believe in Mexican nationalism? What about all the Mexican flags at recent protests in Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix and elsewhere?

“The Spanish conquistadors and English fought it out for the New World, more than half of which is Spanish-speaking (or Portuguese-speaking) today,” The Darwinian said. “That battle for cultural control of the New World continues. Christian Spaniards were descended from the Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Vandals (namesake of Andalusia), and 85 percent of Mexicans are Mestizos whose conquistador ancestry is mixed with tribes such as the warlike Aztecs. Mexicans are a macho people with a grievance, having lost half of their nation’s territory to us more than 160 years ago in the Mexican-American War and war of Texas liberation. If you were in their place, how would you feel?

“We, of course, had our troops in the ‘Halls of Montezuma,’ as the Marine song recalls,” he continued. “We militarily occupied Mexico City, and it might have been better for Mexico’s oppressed peons if we’d liberated the country from its feudal lords and incorporated it into the United States. We could have done this in the 1840s, but we made the political decision not to, in part because our cultures were then so different.

“The good news,” he said, “is that today our cultures are not poles apart, as they are in the Muslim immigrant takeover of Europe. Hispanics come from the Western European tradition, speak a European language rooted in Latin akin to our English, and share America’s Judeo-Christian faith. These Hispanic immigrants are not a flood of Muslims or Martians, but of fellow citizens of Western culture. They can and will be assimilated.

“And, frankly,” he said, “if these immigrants were not strong people with the genes of pioneers, explorers, warriors and conquerors, would they be worthy to join the rest of us Americans? This is our shared heritage, too. We want and need these newcomers to be like us – so why should it frighten us that they are? Would you prefer our new blood to come from weaklings?”

If you’re so optimistic, I asked The Darwinian, where do you see the immigration issue heading?

“Our politicians will play their usual games,” he replied. “The government will make paper concessions that sound like a halfway solution to the current public anger. And the day after the 2006 congressional and 2008 presidential elections, the tougher enforcement at the border will be eased and the immigrant flood will resume.

“These concessions will make today’s illegal immigrants in America feel better, more included. They also show that we are not like feudal Mexico, where those born on the bottom are doomed to stay there. The key to America’s success and worldwide attraction is that we have social mobility. That’s what brought our ancestors, too – the fact that by moving here, you have the freedom and opportunity to move up society’s ladder and fulfill your dreams.

“But the bigger purpose of what the politicians are proposing,” he added, “is to get these immigrants onto the tax rolls. Too many have made good money -- $10 to $20 per hour or more – without paying their tribute to the politicians. So now they will be taxed, but their protests and complaints will ease. Remember, the powers that be don’t just want Mexican ‘guest workers.’ They also want millions more Mexican-American citizens.

“And then, to the surprise of each new generation of Mexican-American and other Latino citizens, the politicians will let in the next wave of illegals to drive down the wages of the Hispanics we’ve granted the path to citizenship. But these former illegals will now have a higher social status than the new illegals, so they will accept this. And like most other Americans they’ll grouse about the new illegals, who in their turn will be given amnesty in some different disguise. Each generation’s children will keep learning English and assimilating. We’ll muddle through.”

And how, I asked, will this play out politically?

“The liberal media is denouncing Republicans as nativists and racists” The Darwinist replied. “But the smarter Hispanics see things the national media tries hard to hide. They see that it’s been Democrats in Congress, not Republicans, who voted to make the illegal aliens felons, and that it’s always been the Democrats, the party of the slave owners and the Klan, who exploit racial differences to gain political power.

“The smarter Latinos also see something else that the Democratic Party has been doing,” he said. “Two of the most loyal Democratic voting blocs have for many decades been organized labor and African-Americans. And who have the Democrats shafted in their frantic rush to win Hispanic votes?

“The Democrats, happy to drive down wages, have stabbed organized labor in the back,” The Darwinist continued. “And knowing that a flood of poor Mexican workers will hurt poor people and African-Americans worse than any other groups, the Democrats in Congress have stabbed the poor and their African-Americans voters in the back, too.

“Smart Hispanics see this,” he said. “They know the Democrats can never be trusted. And they already understand that the way to have political power is by vote switching. By voting overwhelmingly for Democrats, African-Americans and union workers got taken for granted by the Democratic Party and ignored as unwinnable by the Republican Party. These groups who tied their fate to the Democrats have been betrayed by the party they trusted.

“Smart Latinos won’t make that mistake,” The Darwinian continued. “They won’t be a pawn for either party, even though their cultural values of hard work, family and faith are far closer to the Republicans. Intelligent Hispanics certainly won’t become voter puppets of the Democratic Party. They will become a vibrant bipartisan part of American democracy, like the Irish immigrants from whom came Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.”

And where do you see history headed in the New World?

“Latin America never fully experienced the European Enlightenment, which is why its feudal societies keep going through spasms of leftist infection as is now happening in several countries,” said The Darwinian. “But in the long run, we will have a New World common market from Alaska to Argentina. The never-ending waves of Mexican immigration will learn English, but most American school kids will soon be required to take years of mandatory Spanish classes.

“Along the border itself,” he said, “we have migrant workers on both sides. El Paso recruited its own semi-pro ice hockey team in the desert because so many American managers have moved from Michigan to this Texas border city to oversee auto manufacturing facilities just across the Rio Grande in Juarez, where American union, environmental and other rules don’t rule the day.

“You probably noticed,” The Darwinian added, “that the 471-page ‘immigration-restricting’ bill authored by Senators John McCain of Arizona, a Republican presidential aspirant for 2008, and Democrat Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts includes all sorts of incentives to attract illegal immigrants, including in-state tuition at state universities. This means that an illegal alien could get much cheaper taxpayer-subsidized university tuition in, say, California than could native born American citizens from bordering Arizona, Nevada or Oregon whose federal taxes help pay for the University of California.

“I see Latin American and American cultures continuing to intertwine and blend their best qualities,” he continued. If this intertwining process gets thwarted, then the modern adage may prove true – that to help your descendants survive you should teach your children Spanish and your grandchildren Chinese.

“A better model for our future has been set by the Bush family,” The Darwinian concluded. “President George W. Bush speaks Spanish. His brother Jeb, the Florida Governor, converted to Roman Catholicism to wed a lovely Mexican girl, and their son Jorge P. Bush may someday be elected the first Mexican-American President of the United States. The Captain of the Starship Enterprise might be named Diego Gonzalez instead of James Kirk. James was the patron saint of Spain, not England, and his name is that of California’s second largest city, San Diego. In the long run, I’m optimistic.”

An interesting take on illegal immigration and its possibilities. I'm on record as opposing immigration by stealth, but, to me, the most important thing is that English be spoken in the public square by all current and prospective citizens of the United States.

And, BTW, Carlos Mencia is one funny dude...

I said all along the mexican illegals are imported by and for and will remain:
Catholic, Liberals, and will bring in socialism.

The Conservative, Evangelical, movement has just been sidetracked!

IF you all are wondering why, suddenly, our (R) Senators have appeared to lost their collective minds and should have passed HR4437, and why suddenly the undocumented worker is unionizing (a liberal idea) it is because there is an OBVIOUS battle in House and Senate, between good and evil!!

What is that battle? Plain and simple, Conservativism and liberalism, commonly referred to as RINO's, Republican, Liberal.

This might explain what is happening and why:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_conservatism
Edmund Burke know who he is?

Are all Republicans conservative? Is being a Republican Conservative a state of mind, a philosophy?

We FReepers have stated again and again that we will never accept or even allow liberals, socialists to take over this country, that our politicians who represent the Republican party had better stick to Republican values, conservative ideals. Than suddenly we are hit with the illegal undocumented worker MOVEMENT!

And suddenly, except for a few Republicans they are passing or desiring to pass legislation that is in agreement with everything we are against, LIBERAL SOCIALISM.

I don't know about you but personally it shocked me! I felt we were all betrayed.

The illegals are not only getting welfare, medicaid and all the freebies we have to offer we taxpayers are footing the bill. They are organizing and the ones who pick fruit have a UNION!! Unions=liberal socialist movement.

Unless you all are prepared to accept a life of liberal socialist movement and have to set aside every ideal you have been taught and believe in than you must find the true conservative republicans and tell them to not allow the takeover of the liberal socialists. Pass HR4437 is the ONLY saving grace for us our beliefs and life as we know it!

It is interesting and may actually have some merit, but the one point he has missed is these "immigrants" also are rebellious and they ignore the law.

This nation does not need anymore bright, rebellious, persistent criminal, genes,

“Of course, but only in the short run,” The Darwinian replied. “Most come with a strong work ethic, devout faith, and stronger family values than most liberal Americans.

So now "devout faith" is a Darwinian advantage? Gee, I thought that was an indicator of flaccid, weakminded gullibility.

As an aside, it's funny how the Catholic church is in favor of breaking the law to justify the influx of millions of Catholics. I guess old fashioned evangelism is out of style- they can just import parishioners now.

There, now I've got the atheists AND the Catholics mad at me. haha

Actually, this is an interesting article. A bit long, but the author understands more about economics and evolution than a lot of people around here (note the connection he makes between Darwin and free-markets). Think I should ping the list? The only problem is that this thread combines two of FR's "third rail" issues.

The Roman and Greek societies were destroyed from within by, people who migrated there to be closer to the wealth and prosperity these societies had created. Obviously, the powers that be, have been listening to 'The Darwanian', hoping for his 'Orwellian Utopia' to come to pass. I personally, have serious doubts that this system will work as planned.

The problem with many of the illegals, particularly Mexican, is that most are Indians from Southern Mexico. Their culture is very collectivist. There is little or not tradition of private property and individualism. This culture could change our American individualism and of course, turn it more Democratic (as in the Party).

“We’re almost literally sucking Mexico’s brains out, leaving mostly the dregs”

More likely we are achieving the exact opposite, taking the least educated and least skilled. While it is hard not to admire the guts and determination of illegal border crossers, in an information-age economy it is mental prowess not physical strength that determines a nation's fitness.

“'Free market competition' ...”

Allowing the labor market to be flooded with unskilled labor is a protectionist measure; it benefits certain industries and groups at the expense of others. In effect it alters free-market conditions that would exist within our borders (assuming you believe in borders).

This columnist was first to identify the paradox that today’s liberals demand that Darwinian evolution be taught in our public school classrooms but insist that real Darwinian competition – dodge ball, score keeping, the very idea of winners and losers – be banished from the playgrounds of those same schools.

Interesting read.
