Stunning facts about the proposed immigration bill
NRO ^ | 4-6-06 | Mark Levin

SENATOR SESSIONS ON SECURING AMERICA'S BORDERS ACT

Mr. President, I thank Senator Leahy, ranking member on the Judiciary Committee.

I have received just this afternoon in my office some disturbing news in the form of correspondence from the Congressional Budget Office. It suggests a number of areas where the amendment we are talking about here today, No. 3424, the immigration so-called compromise, violates our budget and the rules of the Senate.

Let me read from the correspondence we have received. This is something, as you know, Mr. President, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, that we never discussed at all. It is not a matter we spent any time at all discussing as we moved forward with legislation which ultimately cleared that committee and came to the floor — legislation which I thought was not good legislation and which I opposed, and so did the Senator from Texas, who just relinquished the Chair. We didn't discuss the financial impact of the legislation before us.

Stand Up For America !

We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

New "Adopt a Post" and "Affiliate Program" Pages are Here! - April 20, 2006

BorderFenceProject.com now has two new pages - "Adopt a Post" and "Affiliate Program". You can now order your own engraved tag and have us mount it on a post as part of our public border fence, and earn affiliate commissions with the sale of these tags as well as private ranch fencing! All profits go to the public fence project fund. A few examples of prospective tags and how they appear are shown here:

Adopt a Post

For a donation of only $50, you will be part of the hall of fame as we decorate as many fence posts as possible, and 95% of your fee goes to the treasury to fund the building of the public border fence. This gives us about 20 feet of border fence and camera surveillance. For an additional $50, we will photograph tag and e-mail you an attachment JPG file of your tag mounted on its actual fence post, as well as the location of your landmark with city, state, and GPS coordinates.

Thanks for posting your letter to Senator Nelson.

I like your no-uncertain-terms. That is the only way to approach this.

Subject: [TA] We Need Your Help Now!

Help us stop the Senate from destroying the nation!

You and I are on the verge of the most critical week ever in our crusade for immigration reform, border security and the integrity of our national culture.

Beginning next week--on April 24th, the U.S. Senate will resume debate on the dreadful “compromise” immigration bill that was launched just before their Easter recess.

This bill…..supported by the likes of Ted Kennedy, Arlen Specter, John McCain, and George W. Bush….is a complete and total sell-out to the Open Borders and Big Business lobbies. It is blanket amnesty, pure and simple, an insult to law-abiding, hard-working Americans…..and to immigrants who came to this country the right way, the legal way!

The more we learn about the bill the more outraged I become. My friend, the Senate was on the verge of passing a bill that would provide effective amnesty to the 20 million people living here illegally……AND to the members of their families not even in the country yet!

IN ADDITION, it would welcome another 450,000 foreign workers into the country every year, AND their families! That’s 990,000 visas a year for a guest worker program…...and everyone gets in-state tuition and a path to citizenship!

THEN there is the tidal wave of additional illegal immigrants from south of the border. How do I know? The Senate stripped the bill of mandatory employee verification (didn’t want to burden their corporate masters) and they have keep border security measures to a minimum. (Let’s not forget, the cheapest labor is the illegal labor—not guest workers.)

Thanks to your calls Republican Senators were unnerved and a few good Senators, like Sen. Sessions of Alabama, were able to stop the bill from passing before Easter. But the Senate is scheduled to take it up again on April 24th! The Chamber is not taking no for an answer.

Our founding Chairman, Congressman Tom Tancredo, and the many opponents of amnesty in the House of Representatives are ready to fight hard against any amnesty bill the Senate votes out.

But a bad bill from the Senate…..one that calls for amnesty and guest workers ….puts Tom and our side in a tough negotiating position from the start.

That’s why I want to urge you again to pick up the phone and call BOTH your U.S. Senators. Even if one or both of your Senators are declared friends or opponents of amnesty ....please, I beg you, call them both and register your views today!

The mainstream media, religious groups, corporate lobbyists, the White House, and the Hispanic lobby are taking up the rally cry of the illegals marching in our streets. They don’t care that the crowd carries Mexican flags and speaks no English.

We must make our voice even louder! We simply can’t lose this one!

So if you are able this week I urge you to go any town hall meetings or public events of your Congressman or Senators. Track them down in church if you have to. Also visit their offices, and keep calling them. Make certain they know where you stand!

Meanwhile Team America is working to put an American face back onto this issue. The media has really done an amazing job of making illegal immigrants the story and we must not let them succeed!

So we are planning several press conferences next week and I could use your help.

We are looking for Hispanic Americans who are outraged over amnesty, and American workers who have lost jobs or businesses because of illegals workers. We want them to be part of our press conferences, which will be in Washington next week. The more people we can bring together the stronger our message.

If you know of any Hispanic Americans who might like to join us, or any Americans who have lost a job or a business because of illegal immigration who might be willing to be part of this effort please have them contact me. (703-255-1399 or bay2@teamamericapac.org).

Thanks so much for all your help and support. And please, please, please call your Senators and Congressman. We can not let them pass any amnesty!

Yours in the cause of a secure and law-abiding nation,

Bay Buchanan

Lou Dobbs Tonight
Thursday, April 20, 2006

NOTE: CNN must be pressing Lou to do other news!

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff held a press conference today to discuss the national immigration enforcement policy. Is there anything new in this policy, and will it include a crackdown on employers of illegal aliens? We’ll take a look tonight.

The immigration debate has focused on two choices: amnesty or kick out the 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens. Lawmakers say both options are politically and financially costly. But what about a third option? We'll tell you what else can be done as part of a humane, rational and effective solution to our illegal immigration crisis.

And Congressmen Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Peter DeFazio of Oregon co-wrote a letter to President Bush calling for an Emergency Energy Summit to immediately reduce the skyrocketing cost of gas in the United States.

Two Mexican Police Officials Decapitated (4/19/06)

By NATALIA PARRA Associated Press Writer

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) -- The decapitated heads of two police officials were found early Thursday dumped in front of a government building in this Pacific coast resort, authorities said.

The heads of police commander Mario Nunez Magana and officer Jesus Alberto Ibarra were found at the same site where four drug traffickers died during a shootout with law enforcement. The heads of the two - who were involved in the Jan. 27 shootout - were accompanied by sign that warned, "So that you learn to respect."

Acapulco, 180 miles southwest of Mexico City, has been shaken this year by more than a dozen high-profile shooting deaths as well as several grenade attacks on police stations.

Federal investigators link the violence to a turf war between drug gangs in northern Mexico for lucrative smuggling routes into the United States.

Another Grim Report on the Jobs Front
Paul Craig Roberts
Wednesday, April 19, 2006

Is your job safe? Not if it can be done abroad. The only safe jobs are in domestic services that require a "hands-on" presence, such as barbers, hospital orderlies and waitresses.

For a number of years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly payroll jobs reports have been sending U.S. policymakers dire warnings, only to be ignored. The March report repeats the message. Ninety-five percent of the new jobs created are in domestic services. The U.S. economy no longer creates jobs in export or export-competitive sectors.

Wholesale and retail trade, waitresses and bartenders account for 46 percent of the new jobs. Education and health services, administrative and waste services, and financial activities account for another 46 percent.

This has been the profile of U.S. employment growth for a number of years, along with some construction jobs filled by legal and illegal immigrants. It is the job profile of a Third World economy.

From January 2001 to January 2006, the U.S. economy lost 2.9 million manufacturing jobs. The promised replacement jobs - "new economy" high-tech knowledge jobs - have failed to materialize.

High-tech knowledge jobs are also being outsourced abroad. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. employment of engineers and architects declined by 189,940 between November 2000 and November 2004 (latest data available). Economist Alan Blinder estimates that as many as 56 million American jobs are susceptible to offshore outsourcing. That would be about half of the U.S. workforce.

Offshoring has contributed to the explosion of the U.S. trade/current account deficit over the past decade to $800 billion annually and rising. The United States has a trade deficit in manufactured products, including advanced technology products, of more than a half trillion dollars annually, a sum far larger than the oil import bill.

To cover the trade deficit, the United States has to turn over to foreigners ownership of its accumulated wealth. This worsens the current account deficit, as the income streams on the U.S.-based assets now accrue to foreigners.

Many economists pretend that the whopping U.S. trade/current account deficit is evidence that the rest of the world has great confidence in America. They pretend that it is foreign investment in the United States that causes the trade deficit, whereas the simple fact is that it is the U.S. trade deficit that gives foreigners the dollars with which to purchase our existing assets.

Traditionally, a trade deficit might indicate that a country's industries were not competitive against imports from abroad, resulting in a decline in the exchange value of the country's currency. This would make foreign goods more expensive for that country and its goods cheaper for foreigners, thus restoring a balance.

This does not work for the United States for three reasons:

  • The U.S. dollar is the world's reserve currency. The dollar can be used to settle all international accounts. Therefore, there is a world demand for dollars. This demand absorbs what would be an excess supply for any other country running such large deficits.

  • China pegs its currency to the dollar, thus preventing an adjustment in the price of the two countries' goods and services. Other countries, such as Japan, intervene in currency markets by purchasing dollars in order to support the dollar and prevent their currencies from rising in dollar value.

  • Offshoring turns U.S. production into imports. Much of the U.S. trade deficit results from offshoring, not from traditional trade competition. The collapse of world socialism and the advent of the high-speed Internet made cheap foreign labor available to U.S. companies. U.S. firms use foreign labor to produce offshore the goods and services that they market to Americans. For example, more than half of the large U.S. trade deficit with China is comprised of goods and services produced by U.S. companies in China for American markets.

How can the United States reduce its trade deficit when it deprives itself of exports and fills itself with imports by offshoring its production of goods and services, and when the devaluation of the dollar is limited by the dollar's reserve role and by other countries pegging their currency to the dollar or by intervening to support the dollar? Obviously, when balance returns to U.S. trade, it will not come through traditional means.

One way balance can return is by the United States oversupplying the world with dollars to the point at which the dollar is abandoned as the reserve currency.

Another way is through the limit placed on Americans' ability to consume that results from replacing manufacturing and engineering jobs with waitress, bartender and hospital orderly jobs. A country that loses high value-added jobs and gains low value-added jobs is in danger of losing its prosperity. Offshoring raises corporate profits in the short-run at the expense of destroying the domestic consumer market in the long-run.

Most economists are confused about offshoring. They mistakenly think offshoring is an example of free trade bringing mutual benefit through the principle of comparative advantage. It is not. Offshoring is an example of companies obtaining absolute advantage by combining high-tech capital with low-cost labor. The gains from absolute advantage are asymmetrical or one-sided. The cheap-labor country gains, and the expensive-labor country loses.

As Morgan Stanley economist Stephen Roach pointed out on April 7, "average hourly compensation of Chinese manufacturing workers is only 3-4 percent of levels in the United States, 10 percent of the pay rate of Asia's newly industrialized economies, and 25 percent of levels in Mexico and Brazil." Roach also notes that with a rural population of 745 million (about two-and-a-half times the total U.S. population) and headcount reductions of more than 60 million workers from state-owned enterprises, China will not experience a labor shortage anytime soon.

This means that it will be a long time before Chinese wages rise enough to offset the benefits of offshoring. The same can be said about India. Consequently, a large percentage of U.S. jobs is vulnerable to being moved abroad.
