Stunning facts about the proposed immigration bill

SENATOR SESSIONS ON SECURING AMERICA'S BORDERS ACT

Mr. President, I thank Senator Leahy, ranking member on the Judiciary Committee.

I have received just this afternoon in my office some disturbing news in the form of correspondence from the Congressional Budget Office. It suggests a number of areas where the amendment we are talking about here today, No. 3424, the immigration so-called compromise, violates our budget and the rules of the Senate.

Let me read from the correspondence we have received. This is something, as you know, Mr. President, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, that we never discussed at all. It is not a matter we spent any time at all discussing as we moved forward with legislation which ultimately cleared that committee and came to the floor — legislation which I thought was not good legislation and which I opposed, and so did the Senator from Texas, who just relinquished the Chair. We didn't discuss the financial impact of the legislation before us.

Stand Up For America !

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag...
We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

A Pictorial from the past week

Photo of the Day!

Sue King displays an anti-immigration sticker at a rally in Atlanta, 17 April 2006. The US state of Georgia has enacted one of the toughest laws targeting illegal migrants in the United States, requiring employers to verify the immigration status of workers before hiring them and penalizing those who hire undocumented workers

Daisey Lomeli looks on while draped in a Mexican Flag during an immigration rally held by area high school students at the State Capitol in Denver, Wednesday, April 19, 2006

Johnnie Bracamontes (2nd R) waves a flag while standing with Lawrence Sandoval (R) outside the Los Angeles City Hall during a student demonstration against HR4437, a proposed legislation that cracks down against illegal immigrants, April 15, 2006.

Jorge Maljas runs to the front steps of the State Capitol carrying a Mexican flag during a rally in Denver, Wednesday, April 19, 2006. Waving U.S. and Mexican flags and clogging busy streets, about 1,000 high school students and adults descended on the state Capitol for therally to support immigrant rights, police said. Marchers jammed inbound lanes of Speer Boulevard, a major route to downtown, and temporarily blocked other intersections as they crossed, but no problems were reported, police spokeswoman Virginia Quinones said.

Pedro Ortega poses for a photo in Schiller Woods Forest Preserve, Thursday, April 13, 2006, in Schiller Park, Ill. Ortega, 30, was fired along with nine co-workers from an automotive parts factory in a suburb south of Chicago after attending a March 10 immigration march that drew more than 100,000 people. A workers-rights organization got involved and negotiated with Cobra Metal Works Corp., which rehired the employees about a month later, he said. The company said in a statement it supports immigration reform and will allow workers to speak out as long as they follow company procedures for taking time off.

From Malkin:

I speak regularly with dedicated men and women who work for the Department of Homeland Security, and especially agents from across the country who work for the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

I can tell you based on my reporting over the last five years that the Bush administration's belated efforts to look tough on immigration enforcement at worksites amount to a cynical, politically timed effort to salvage the White House's guest worker program dreams and schemes. I'm referring to this story linked prominently today on Drudge and spread elsewhere:

Well, this is all sounds good and tough...until you look at the Bush administration's record for the last several years. Don't be fooled.

For those covering DHS Secretary Chertoff's press conference today, ask him to explain this:

They must think we're idiots!

I just sent this to my Federal reps thru RightMarch:

April 20, 2006

The Honorable Bill Nelson
United States Senate
716 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510-0905

Re: Illegal Immigration

Dear Senator Nelson:

Tell Congress To Say NO to Amnesty for Illegals!

As your constituent, I'm writing to ask you to please oppose ANY "immigration bill" that includes ANY "guest worker" amnesty provisions, and to STAND STRONG and "hold the line" on the Sensenbrenner immigration bill that has already passed the House of Representatives.

Until the federal government is willing to enforce the immigration laws that are already on the books, Americans will be highly skeptical of any additional promises to enforce a new and deeply flawed approach.

If recent history is an accurate guide, this so-called guest worker notion would only encourage a new wave of illegal aliens and make America's uncontrolled and unacceptable immigration debacle even worse than it is now.

Such legislation is a bad idea not only because it creates a transparent path to amnesty, but also because it would reduce work opportunities, depress wages, and lower worker protection for Americans. Further, it would be impossible to administer and even more unlikely to be enforced.

The most important job you have to do right now is to SECURE OUR BORDER against illegal immigration. Like millions of Americans, I'm sick and tired of the "inside the beltway" politics on this issue; I will listen to NO MORE weasel words or slick excuses.

This issue is BLACK OR WHITE - there are NO "shades of gray." We need you to pass TRUE border security legislation, such as the Sensenbrenner bill already passed by the House. Please, oppose ANY "immigration bill" that includes ANY "guest worker" amnesty provisions, and "hold the line" on the Sensenbrenner immigration bill. I will be watching your vote on this issue very closely.

One easy and cost effective way to secure our borders is to recruit landowners on the border and train them in the use of government radios and reporting format. Whenever they spot illegals crossing the border they can simply radio for help. Ideally this would result in national guard troops responding with Apache Helicopters or Bradley vehicles in case the Mexican Army decides to perform the 210th armed border crossing in the last ten years! That's short term.

Long term is build a FENCE or better yet a Berlin style WALL! If you'll recall your history, once erected the Berlin Wall worked so well that any successful attempt to cross over by even ONE person was international news! Build it and they will NOT come.

Sincerely,

I immediately had my suspicions when I read about the "bust" yesterday ... playing us for fools is right.

Besides, I didn't see it reported anywhere as to what exactly they would do with the "hundreds" of illegals rounded up.

Some activists fear migrants' boycott, strike may backfire

April 20, 2006, 11:29AM
In Houston, organizers say they are neither for nor against joining the May 1 plans

By SAMANTHA LEVINE
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - A nationwide boycott and general strike planned for May 1 to push for immigrant rights is falling out of favor with many advocacy groups because they fear a public opinion backlash.

"We would be throwing the atomic bomb ... the last weapon in our arsenal," Jaime Contreras, chairman of the National Capital Immigration Coalition, said Thursday at a briefing for the news media.

Contreras, who helped organize a march in Washington as part of the pro-immigration rallies around the country April 10, said a boycott was premature because immigration legislation is pending in Congress. ...

For instance, he said, a strike and a boycott on purchases by immigrants could lead to losses for some of the business that are backing legalization for illegal immigrants. Also, demonstrators could lose their jobs if they skip work.

Fearing Backlash, Some Immigration Activists Aren't Backing Boycott

By Darryl Fears
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, April 20, 2006; A13

The boycott idea emerged in early April from activists of Latino Movement USA, and the anti-war ANSWER Coalition. Immigration leaders at Thursday's briefing and elsewhere said those organizations were no longer part of the national immigration reform movement. ANSWER spokesman Carlos Alvarez said no group or coalition owns the issue of immigration reform.

That's a rather strange metaphor...

Obviously, they are playing things by ear and are in full radar mode.
