GREEN BAY, WI (AP) -- A man accused of staging dog fights at his home faces sentencing in June after reaching a plea deal rather than go to trial Friday.
Ngia Vang, 45, of Green Bay entered an Alford plea to one count of instigating animal fights, and a second count was dismissed. In that type of plea, a defendant maintains his innocence but concedes the evidence is sufficient for a conviction.
The charges were filed in November after police and an animal control officer found that Vang's basement had blood-spattered drywall, duct tape, collars and sticks for prying dogs' mouths open.
Animal Control Officer Sharon Hensen had samples of the blood analyzed, and the results showed it came from one of Vang's dogs and half a dozen other dogs.
"For there to be blood on the walls from five to seven dogs could only point to one thing," Hensen said.
As part of the plea bargain, prosecutors recommended a probationary sentence of just over three years and 30 days in jail. They said Vang should be barred from having dogs for five years and also should be required to pay restitution for costs of housing his pit bulls and doing DNA testing on the blood.
Defense lawyer Mark Skvara said he would ask for a two-year term of probation when Vang is sentenced June 2. He said Vang's plea applied only to part of the law that refers to maintaining a place where animals fought.
But Brown County Assistant District Attorney Tom Coaty said any part of dog fighting is reprehensible.
"To use puppies as bait animals, to wager so dogs can fight and inflict pain for the pleasure of the spectators, is barbaric," Coaty said.
Skvara said Vang is not a U.S. citizen, has nine children and could face deportation in addition to the other penalties.
Hensen led the investigation, which started in July 2004, and was glad to see it end with a conviction.
"It was a long time coming," she said.
He needs jail time. Ten years would be about right.
What a homey atmosphere his abode must convey to visitors....
I have a neighbor somewhat behind me. He has an oversized pit bull that jumps the wall to either my yard or the yard two doors from me. I opened my back door, to get some evening air, and my husband asked me when we got the dog? I looked out, called the animal shelter, and they took the dog.
One week later, the dog is back jumped in the other dog and was released again. This dog is mean, spits when it barks has held people at bay and the animal shelter keeps releasing the dog to the owner??? The dog's mannerisms are quite like a fighting dog.
Deport him and his nine children...
Just doing the dogfighting that Americans refuse to do.
What a homey atmosphere his abode must convey to visitors....
Yes, a charming atmosphere indeed.
"To use puppies as bait animals, to wager so dogs can fight and inflict pain for the pleasure of the spectators, is barbaric," Coaty said.
Am I insensitive to wonder if he is the sole support of his nine-children family?
"Just doing the dogfighting that Americans refuse to do."
LOL! :)
They pretty much clean out the animal shelters wherever they settle...
If I were you I'd put an end to the problem. A .22 bullet behind the ear will do the job humanely. If you're concerned about the noise you can either shoot it point blank with the muzzle pressed against the animal or try shooting from about 8' inside a room of the house with the window open about 3" or so. In all likelihood however most of your neighbors will breathe a sigh of relief when they hear the shot.
lol, not here in california...
The whole Fox Valley is turning into a third world country compared to 20 yrs ago...
imo
Good grief!!!
Maybe.
About as insensitive as I am in not giving a rat's ass as to how many children he has.
My concern is who will pay the bill to get the flea and the nits out of this country and back to the sewer from whence they crawled.
And that is a rhetorical question.
I well know the anser.
The clown behind me at one point had 8 pitt bulls. His wife said they were rescued fighting dogs. One of the neighbors called the cops because the dogs started fighting. One dog ended up dead. He was sighted for having too many pets in town. THe limit is 4.
wow. When I called the animal shelter, they told me there was not a dog registered at that address I callled in on. Well, duh, because the dog wasn't licensed either. The neighbor who also had this dog jump into her yard, almost put her grand daughter out to play when she looked up and saw this huge dog standing in her yard.
The dog could have had her grand daughter for lunch.
