Supporters of President Hugo Chavez threw eggs, fruit and vegetables at the U.S. ambassador's car Friday, and a group of motorcyclists chased his convoy for miles, at times pounding on the vehicles, a U.S. Embassy official said. No one was hurt.
Embassy spokesman Brian Penn said Venezuelan police escorts did not intervene as the car carrying Ambassador William Brownfield was pounded and pelted.
"We're being attacked by groups of motorcyclists while we're traveling in an embassy car," Penn told The Associated Press by cell phone shortly before the motorcycles stopped chasing the four-car convoy.
"It's a very violent demonstration by a small group of people who appear to be organized by the mayor's office," Penn said.

Wouldn't it be a hoot to find out how *they* would react to the same treatment?
Let's park a couple Battleships off the coast and throw things back.
Ozzie Guillen is a big Chavez fan. Wonder if he'll sing that piece of crap communist's praises now?
Same thing happened to VP Nixon 50 years ago.
Ping
I don't think we have any battleships left on active duty, but an aircraft carrier battle group will be conducting maneuvers in and around the Caribbean sea in short order.
Venezuela is a very high crime country and anything against us is just a diversion from their own problems.
Chavez is an ass!
bump
Good thing I wasn't the driver of the car, there would be motorcycles bumped off of the road and laying in ditches for miles.
I'm a motorcyclist, so no flames. This situation was a little 'different' than some idiot in a cage.
Thanks for the ping. Looks like it might be time for President Bush to have Secretary Rice have a heart to heart with Hughie and tell him what the reaction would be should another event occur. I'm sure she could convince him that our sitting President is not another Jimmy Carter.
"Wouldn't it be a hoot to find out how *they* would react to the same treatment?"
True enough. I believe a few deft steering wheel movements would take care of bikers banging on a car.
The U.S. embassy should send a polite diplomatic note to Chavez, thanking him for the gift of the salad and say nothing else about it.
It appears the Hate America crowd is growing like a malignant cancer. I hope we're ready.
I think her strategy has been to ignore him or even to offer reassuring words to other Chavez-influenced new Marxist governments down there in hopes of moderating them. Basically, this is an extension of the Carter "strategy," which left most of LatAm as prey of the wolves. It's not quite as bad as the Clinton "strategy," which actually encouraged the left down there by giving away large parts of Colombia, but it's bad enough, and the next Administration is going to have to face the results of this.
Sadly, I don't things have improved under Rice. I thought we had bottomed out with Colin Powell and his weak response, but Rice seems to be going him one better. Someday maybe we will learn that to a dictator (like Chavez), silence equals consent. And weakness.
Venezuela has one source of wealth, oil, that they sell to the U.S. marketed through CITCO stations. Venezuela is another reason why the U.S. should become energy independent.
If it were not for oil Venezuela would be of interest only to National Geographic.
Venezuela, a 5th rate, Third World disaster.
I'm in for redirecting all welfare money to new hardware and
manpower to deliver hugo and all like him a one two punch that
shuts their uppity nonsense down.
I'll fly, ride or sail the first salvo.
I'm sure there will be a tremendous international outcry about this. (sarcasm)
