If this were happening in NJ, there'd be posters lining up to make snide remarks about my state.

In Republican Texas, no less. Apparently, new car sales aren't enough to sate the government's appetite for revenue.

(I never put my foot in my mouth...I shoot that sucker off long before it gets anywhere near my mouth)
I never understood this.
When the car was purchased first-hand, wasn't a tax paid to the gubmint?
So when the gubmint aims to tax an item for which a tax has already been paid, doesn't this constitute a double-taxation?
I propose the gubmint pay the original owner a present-day-value reimbursement of the tax paid originally, at the time the owner transfers the item to another party, who will be forced to pay a tax for it.

You have to keep on eye on these jerks regardless of party affiliation.

this is one of those things i still haven't figured out how its legal.. if i buy a vehicle for $20,000, and pay my sales tax, then if i sell it to a private individual later, they get the tax AGAIN? then again every time its sold? same goes on houses, death taxes, gift taxes, etc. multiple taxing on the same item just seems wrong.

Well if they can't stop it in Texas then we can't stop it anywhere. These days they are messing with Texas and getting away with it.

Texas needs more revenue?
Just do what they do in Florida. Build more toll roads, promise they'll only collect the tolls until the roads are paid for... Well you get the idea.

This is bad, no doubt, and you should pummel the rat-bastards who thought it up.
Just remember, Virginia insists on taxing cars every year ... We shoved a repeal of that halfway down the buggers throats. Still need to complete the job.

Ct.does the same crap.Got out of the service and bought a 600 dollar t-bird beater to get around.Went to register it,and they said it was worth 1400 dollars'book value'!That is what they wanted to charge me tax on!After some heated squabbling,I convinced the clerk to come out and look at it.She said, that sure doesn't look like a 1400 dollar car.She only charged me on the 600 I paid.I sure hope Tx.doesn't start this crap.A used car is only worth what you can get for it.The people who register your vehicle become an appraiser also?I smell fish!

And the state of Texas is supposed to run by Republicans. Good fricking grief!!
This is kind of like the notice I got from my local Tax Assessor Collector the other day for Tax Renumeration . They wanted to know what I had in the way of equipment, inventory and vehicles for my office. Never received this notice till recently.

an independent appraisal from a car dealershipNow THERE'S an honest bunch to be in charge of appraisals that determine how much tax you are going to pay!
