Putin Vindicated?
In 2004 the Russian president said that Saddam had planned terrorist attacks on America. New Iraqi documents suggest he may have been right.
IN JULY 2004, DURING THE COURSE of a little-publicized event while on a visit to Kazakhstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin made some unusual remarks:
I can confirm that after the events of September 11, 2001, and up to the military operation in Iraq, Russian special services and Russian intelligence several times received . . . information that official organs of Saddam's regime were preparing terrorist acts on the territory of the United States and beyond its borders, at U.S. military and civilian locations.
Putin's remarks were little noticed by the American press, coming as they did so soon after the release of the 9/11 Commission's report. Moreover, despite his strong opposition to the war in Iraq, Putin was unabashedly in favor of Bush's reelection, having earlier criticized Senator Kerry for supporting unilateral action against Serbia while opposing it with regard to Iraq. Putin went so far as to claim in October 2004 that "The goal of international terrorism is to prevent the election of President Bush to a second term."
And one of the newly-released Iraqi documents, BIAP 2003-000654, indicates that Putin may have been on to something. On page 6 of the document it is revealed that:
Written by the commander of Iraq's Ali Bin Abi Taleb Air Base, this document, if authentic, indicates that Iraq was actively recruiting suicide bombers with the intention of targeting U.S. interests at least as far back as early 2001. Nor is this the only document released with the intention of making it clear that Saddam's intentions for carrying out terrorist attacks against other nations--the plans for Blessed July appear to lay out a similar agenda focusing on using the Saddam Fedayeen to carry out a bombing and assassination campaign in London, Iran, and the "self ruled" areas of Iraq, a likely reference to Iraqi Kurdistan. While these documents do not by themselves prove the veracity of Putin's remarks, if they are deemed to be authentic they would appear to indicate that his claims did not occur in a vacuum.
IF EITHER DOCUMENT can be verified as accurate, it would seem to refute a long-standing contention among members of the U.S. intelligence community that Iraq ceased its involvement in international terrorism after its failed 1993 plot to assassinate former President George H.W. Bush. Indeed, the following exchange is reported in former counterterrorism chief Dick Clarke's book Against All Enemies:

Why? The Russians were practically in bed with Saddam. Remember the GPS jaming devices given to Iraq by Russia?

What I'm wondering is why Putin wanted Bush elected. What was in it for him ? Wheels within wheels.

Yes it would be sad but probably not too surprising. The Russians were close to Saddam and we were absent from Iraq for years, other than the short Gulf War.

Money. The Communist Russians are not yet wealthy enough to go back to the Soviet way of life. With Kerry in office, they would have to make their play.
Dan Darling really knows his stuff when it come to terrorists.
But when it comes to Russians knowing more about Iraq/Saddam than our Intelligence guys, I think it's pretty much expected. Not sad.
Weekly Standard should have given jveritas credit for translating the document.
Exactly - Russia was deeply involved in Iraq both before and after 9/11. It is thought that they had a major role in getting Saddam's WMD out of the county just prior to the Iraq war.
It would be a surprise if they didn't know what was going on.
However, it is no surprise that counter-terrorism czar Richard Clarke didn't know what was happening!! He is proof of the adage that intelligence and politics are incompatible.
The fact that the Russians apparently didn't share this intelligence with us directly shows that Putin & Co. are not to be trusted.

Do these guys realize that when they publish something like this without giving credit to the orginal author and site, they may be setting themselves up for Plagiarism charges?
A lot of future journalists in college set around all day using their computers to see who had the original publication and thought on many issues. It might not happen for a few years, but when it does it can be very embarrassing. Only a rat senator like Biden can get by with it without damages to his reputation.
Well that's because of what Biden's reputation already was ... plagarist, if anything, improves people's impression of him.
When it comes the Weekly Standard I have agreed with them to publish my translations with no need to credit me in the article. However I will ask them if they can mention Free Republic.
Even if there was video of Sadamm shaking hands w/ Osama agreeing to help him attack the US this administration and the homo republicans would be silent. Here we have a plethora of crow for the nay sayers on the left to feast on. This should be a piece of cake. Of course we are reduced to reading it on just freerepublic and the Weekly Standard. I love W but come on! Reagan would have addressed the nation 8 times already. Someone please convince me I am wrong."
I too am extremely frustrated with this. Every time I try to make a public post regarding these documents and jveritas' translations (which I commend him for the hard work and dedication on), I get laughed at for two reasons:
1) the government disclaimer that they have not validated the document. (yes, I know they have not NOT validated them either. doesn't matter)
and 2) the argument that there is NO WAY Bush would NOT be speaking up about this information and vindicating himself, IF it were true.
I can make an argument with the first, the second leaves me stumped, and I'm not even buying my own argument on that one.
The "bush lied" crowd is beginning to suffer 1000 cuts as these documents continue to come to light.
It is SWEET indeed.
