In DC, especially downtown near Capitol Hill where I used to live, the low income housing is being bought up by the affluent and is pushing the old "ghetto" (so to speak) further and further out of town...NE in particular. The middle and upper class neighborhoods are already full to capacity.

Tony, Britt, and Neil? I don't think so.. look at their resumes.. If Couric and Lauer are like bubblegum pop, Tony, Britt, and Neil are like the Rolling Stones. (no age insults implied.)

I've been thinking about some of the things in the Senate bill and don't understand some things. Anyone have any ideas on these - to name a few:

I think it's going to be difficult to determin if an illegal has been here 2 yrs, 5 yrs or 11 yrs. If I knew I was going to get amnesty, wouldn't I say I've been here 5 yrs?
Also, how about how much they owe in back taxes??? Wouldn't I say I've been working for $3 per hour rather than $8 or $10?
They're not tracking overstays now - how are they going to do it w more?
How are they going to round folks up and make sure they return to their home country and apply?

Tony, if these politicians wanted to really do the right thing, they would postpone doing anything on immigration until after the election. [The border can be secured this week by deploying the National Guard liberally long it.]

Instead of enacting bad law that will haunt us for years, they could outline their proposals and then run on them in the Fall. Let the American voters decide if they want any form of amnesty offered to illegals.

But, that would require statesmanship, and that is in very short supply in Washington.

*[Have to take Mrs. FOX downtown. Will see everyone Monday.]

Then the increased housing costs in DC aren't a result of illegal immigration. By your own accusation (true accusation) that they eat up our social services, they aren't in the position to be purchasing houses in affluent neighborhoods. The increased demand causing increased housing prices is not a factor in the illegal immigration debate with the variables you described.

Let me clarify my remarks. Border security must include both physical security and eliminating the magnet that draws illegals here.

Concentrate on enforcing existing laws and/or increase penalties for hiring illegals. The person that hires day laborers, the housing contractor, the landscape company, the motel operator and yes the home owner who employs a maid must make sure that those that work are here legally.

Put in a reward system for those that report illegals. Distasteful? Yeah, but the worker who loses his job to an illegal would be glad to get $500 or $1,000 for reporting. Snitch on your neigbor and be able to take a weekend trip.

Remove the magnet and physically strengthen the border to slow and reverse the flow.

Thank you. I met with Kris Wednesday night, and knew this was coming. Actually the bill is far worse than what we are hearing.

Put in a reward system for those that report illegals. Distasteful? Yeah...

I know we do it for tax cheats and I don't like it there, and I really am uncomfortable with the Soviet style reporting on your neighbors philosophy. That's not the America I know.

All good points.. I'll give my opinion on a few..

I think it's going to be difficult to determin if an illegal has been here 2 yrs, 5 yrs or 11 yrs. If I knew I was going to get amnesty, wouldn't I say I've been here 5 yrs? I believe we could used documentation such as receipts or housing records. We would only give them the benefit based on the oldest documented proof. If no documentation, then they are assumed to be a new illegal immigrant.
Also, how about how much they owe in back taxes??? Wouldn't I say I've been working for $3 per hour rather than $8 or $10? Back to documentation, but this is a challenge.
They're not tracking overstays now - how are they going to do it w more? With the 'carrot' of legal work documentation, we'll have a lot of registration information of who and where these people are.
How are they going to round folks up and make sure they return to their home country and apply? Another question this spurs is what if their home countries won't take them back?

Tony, great show.

Maybe some people feel you support amnesties after reading your piece on Town Hall.

You start off saying the whole immigration debate is overrated, then you quote different percentages of people who support different solutions, giving the appearance that the whole question is unclear.

That might come off as equivocating to many people, which in turn will be tagged as amnesty support.

Perhaps I can list some commonly held feelings vis-a-vis some of your points in the Town Hall piece:

Tony Snow states: The business-creation rate among Hispanic Americans has reached three times the national average, and is growing.

What kind of businesses are they starting? Just restaurants and small grocery stores? If so that won't help the economy a lot. Many businesses are started with affirmative action money anyway, so much of this is probably being paid for by us, and I don't believe they're starting any new Intels. I'd say the Hispanic new business rate is meaningless to Americans. The shops are small and are meant only to employ other Mexicans (like family members).

While remittances to Mexico hit an estimated $20 billion last year (making American cash the second-largest source of Mexican income, behind oil), tax payments by illegal immigrants from Mexico to local, state and federal governments exceeded the $20 billion mark.

What in the world is this? The illegals sat down and filled out 1040's? I just don't believe this Tony, their presence here is illegal, I don't believe the claim they pay taxes.

Since the immigration "reforms" of 1986, the number of jobs in the United States has risen a net total of 44 million. The standard of living in the nation has grown to the point that the average welfare recipient has more creature comforts (homes, computers, televisions, cars, air conditioners, etc.) than the average citizen of France.

This sounds like you're just supporting a negative. "There's no reason not to let them break in", is not an acceptable argument to many people. It puts the onus on Americans to argue why illegals can't have what they want, and that's the reverse onus.

The crime-wave argument doesn't fly, either: Nationwide crime rates have been trending downward for a decade. (Unfortunately, there are no good data to indicate whether illegal-immigrant crime has risen more rapidly than the average, but there is some sketchy evidence that overall crime rates are lower because illegals don't want to be discovered and thus risk deportation.)

This is highly unsavory, it's well known that 30% of the prisoners in California are Mexicans, as in citizens of Mexico. This point gets dangerously close to dismissing a "few" rapes and murders, I know you aren't saying that, but I believe most people will not dismiss the crime element out of hand, or at all.

As for the burden on federal resources, the issue poses a weird quandary. The most cogent fiscal argument against legalizing "undocumented" workers is that it would put an end to a scam that helps most Americans. Illegal immigrants contribute billions each year to Social Security and Medicare. If they were to become legal (and hence eligible for benefits), both programs would tumble into catastrophic bankruptcy far earlier than government accountants project.

There's the tax claim again, Tony I just don't believe they are paying money in. And you conclude that legalized illegals would just destroy the entitlement programs, so it's pretty clear that your impression of the economic benefits (small shops and, as you claim, tax payments) simply pale in comparison to the cost of the illegals.

I think anyone reading your piece might think you are wishy washy on this and want to cover all possibilities in your writing. I personally think you're just mistaken on the economics and social realities of this.
