A 26-year-old man with connections to a prison gang was arrested early Tuesday morning after Lubbock police found a live bomb in his vehicle.
Patrol officers observed Jeremy Lynn Womack of Lubbock acting suspiciously and pulled him over near the 7300 block of University Avenue about 12:30 a.m., Sgt. John Gomez said.
Felix Garcia, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives resident agent in charge, said intelligence information and tattoos visible on Womack's body indicate he is a member of the Aryan Brotherhood, a white supremacist prison gang.
A narcotics-sniffing dog indicated to police there were drugs in the silver 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse that Womack was driving, Gomez said.
As officers continued to search the automobile, they found an explosive device in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, Garcia said.
Officers then called the regional bomb squad. Technicians secured the area and disarmed the bomb.
"It was an improvised explosive device," Garcia said. "These things are extremely dangerous - they are very, very unstable."
Garcia said the bomb Womack possessed was considered live because it was comprised of a container, powder and a firing device. Explosives such as these are easily detonated by shock, friction or heat.
It is unknown why Womack was carrying explosives, Garcia said.
"There is no legitimate reason to carry such a device," he said. "They rarely have no legitimate purpose except to maim and hurt people.
"Any time you see one, the best thing to do is call your local police department," he said.
Garcia said a federal complaint will be filed against Womack for possession of an unregistered improvised explosive device.
If convicted, Womack could face up to 10 years in federal prison and up to $250,000 in fines, Garcia said.
Womack was being held Tuesday at the Lubbock County Jail on state explosives charges and charges of narcotics possession in lieu of a $25,000 bond, according to a jail representative.
He was scheduled to have an additional hearing for charges of possession of a prohibited weapon Tuesday night, said a jail representative.

That guy's going to have a major "appearance issue" the next time he goes job shopping.
Maybe he was gonna blow a stump out of a field. Yeah, that must be it.
Those streets are the edges of campus and almost dead center is the 1000 block of University, I just looked and a business almost at the corner of 19th street is the 1600 block.... so South is my answer.
LOL!! Lubbock is close to Midland only in West Texas terms.
With a steel trap mind like this, Garcia needs to be moved over to head up the Investigative Detective Unit!
OK, Womack was gong to blow up a tree stump in his back yard - sorry for my overly suspicious nature.
It takes one hour, 35 minutes --- slow down in Lamesa, as their only apparent source of revenue is speeding tickets --- people in Houston and Dallas commute longer.
I was born in Lubbock, and grew up in Matador.
LOL... I can visualize this on TV... with an endless, line of illegals marching across the screen behind him.
Ah, the route to take when it floods.
The direct road has improved.
I believe now all the water is directed to the parking lot of the mall in Lubbock.
In Lubbock? We Texans sometimes call Lubbock "'The Center of Texas Bass Fishing' -- 200 miles in any direction to fishable water..." '-)
In the "opinion" of the officers there was suspicious activity. They said the dog, in their "opinion", indicated the presence of drugs. Were there drugs found or was this simply a pretext to search the car?
Does this mean that police officers can search anyone's car if in their "opinion" there is reason to?
Where are the the defenders of the fourth ammendment?
So Now the lot at the mall floods? I used to live on 57th, close to the mall.
Ping!
Nah, they have several nice new lakes nearby --- to control the fact that the area is completely flat and any local depression --- such as the mall parking lot --- turns into a lake at the slightest rain.
"So Now the lot at the mall floods?"
They may have gotten it under control. I defer to the Lubbock native to tell you the status.
There are no tree stumps in Lubbock, because there are so few trees, people wouldn't dare cut one down.
It's way south, basically at S. Loop 289 & University.
In such flat terrain -- where a dip that won't hide a car is called "the big valley" -- water simply can't decide where to go... '-)
It's at 73rd here.
