A roiling sea of immigrants - many of them in the country illegally - and their supporters poured across the Brooklyn Bridge and into Manhattan yesterday to protest what they call "oppressive" reform measures currently under consideration in Congress.
Marchers, waving flags from Mexico, Colombia, Honduras and El Salvador, chanted and carried signs recalling America's roots during the demonstration, organized by state Sen. Ruben Diaz, a Bronx Democrat and native of Puerto Rico.
"That flag on top of the Brooklyn Bridge is symbolic because all these other flags, all these other nations, are covered by the USA," declared Ismael Claudio, 35, also a native Puerto Rican and therefore a U.S. citizen.
In the House, legislation already has passed that would set penalties for anyone who knowingly assists or encourages an illegal immigrant to remain in the country.
The Senate may adopt a broader bill that would be less punitive, create a guest-worker program and open a path to citizenship for the estimated 11M immigrants now in the country without proper papers.
As they trekked over the bridge, demonstrators carried signs proclaiming, "Did the pilgrims need green cards?"
Patricia Urgules, 35, of Ecuador, said......"I came here in search of the American Dream - the dream to be free, to be treated equally," she said. "We only ask for those basic principles this country was founded on."
Construction worker Eduardo Segundo, 40, of Harlem, scoffs at the notion, mentioned by Mayor Bloomberg last week, of a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border.
He recalled sneaking across the border 12 years ago - and said 20 of his and his wife's relatives now live in the United States. ".....The wall that they build will not work. People will just figure out a way to cross."

Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act in 1996; (Deportation and exclusion procedures were consolidated, effective April 1, 1997.)
-The president can deport any alien who was deemed dangerous.
OMG! I think America is in deep trouble here. I don't like anything that I have been seeing. Not good. Not good at all.
sounds like a declaration of war to me!!
Send in ICE and the National Guard!
Congress provided in the Civil Rights Act of 1866 declaring persons born in the US who are subject to a foreign power are deemed to be non-citizens of the United States. That means children of immigrants--anchor babies--and any other individuals born here---who are running around carrying Mexican flags, and following the orders of the Mexican government, are not considered US citizens under the 1866 US Civil Rights law.
Here's the deal: The protestors--carrying Mexican flags---and the Mexican government share the same goals: legalize Mexican illegal aliens and keep the borders open. The Mexican government sees this as a way to relieve economic pressure on their government to reform the economy.
Mexico's leaders also work to retain the loyalty of the immigrant mobs so that, even if our laws allow them to become American citizens, they retain their loyalty to Mexico, and are subjects of the Mexican government.
In the Mexican Congress, it was recently announced that a document would be drafted, to show support for the protest marches in our country. The Mexican government published advertisements in leading American newspapers calling for the legalization of illegal immigrants (those in the United States, not in Mexico) and "a far-reaching guest workers scheme." Not only that, said the ads, but "in order for a US guest workers program to be viable, Mexico should participate in its design, management, supervision and evaluation."
In other words, the Mexican government wants veto power over U.S. immigration policy. Outrageously, many in our own government are assuming the Hyphenate-Fellate position and are only too happy to oblige, as long as there's votes and campaign contributions to be had.
Ruben Aguilar, spokesman for President Vicente Fox, made this statement to support the marches: "The recent protests carried out in different places in the United States are indicative of the imminent necessity of a migratory accord that corresponds to the interests of both countries, and that especially to the defense of the rights of migrants. The government of the (Mexican) Republic ratifies its commitment to the Mexicans who live in the United States and its intention to work in the defense of their rights ..."
It remains to be done that Congress act to deny citizenship to any individual on American soil who is subject to, and who is following the orders of, a foreign government.
These fools better hope a wall works because the next countermeasure will be bullets.
Reconquista Armando Navarro 'Ethnic Studies' Professor at the University of California, Riverside Anti-American, Fifth-Column Menace. "Ladies and Gentlemen, what this means (the immigration bill) is a transfer of power, it means control, and it is the young people, the people who are now moving to develop an agenda for the twenty first century they are going to be in a position to really make the promise of what the Chicano movement was all about in terms of self-determination, in terms of empowerment, even in the terms of an Aztlan...."
I saw this march on TV, there couldn't have been more than 1000 people participating.
I work in a public high school and many of the students who 'walked' last week are p-i-s-s-e-d at us, full of venom and hatred.
Ya know the more I see this kind of thing the more it scared I become...this is not just some illegals wanting to come here to move into better circustances it's an all out uprising...
In all my life I haven't felt my country has been so immediately threatened...
I can't stand most of our lawmakers today! They promise us the moon to get our votes, and once in office all they hand us is the outhouse. I'm sick of the lying thieves! Our government is getting us into such deep doo-doo and I can't see anyway out, at this point.
It remains to be done that Congress act to deny citizenship to any individual on American soil who is subject to, and who is following the orders of, a foreign government.
Yes, but will they?!
And our government is lying to us when they say our obese and our smokers are costing higher health care. This is a cover up! It's the ILLEGAL ALIENS WE ARE TREATING that is driving up our health care cost. The lawmakers are just trying to take the easy way out and blame Americans. I'm sick of it!
......"I came here in search of the American Dream - the dream to be free, to be treated equally," she said. "We only ask for those basic principles this country was founded on."
The rule of law was one of the biggest 'principles' America was founded on? No law, no America. No America, no American dream. You follow, hon?
It is my opinion that we are already in WWIV ( WWIII being the Cold War ) and there are two, somewhat interlocking elements to it:
Islam, a Religion of Peace®? ( links, blogs, quips, quotes, aggravating pictures ) is located here- click the Pic, and scroll backwards:
"Thunder on the Border," click the picture:
( PS- my personal prediction? That picture will become one of the most widely distributed, and most hated, pictures on the internet. The Illegal lobby could not have done more damage to themselves with that "Mexican Flag Superior, America in Distress" photograph if they had tried... )
Now, here's some of the "why" behind part of it:
My wife- the "former Democrat"-- finally "got" why unrestricted, illegal immigration is bad- when she saw what it did in our neighborhood, to the value of our house. Try to sell your home when 2 doors down the duplex has a yard full of cars ( and trucks, the newest & gaudiest ), three satellite dishes, and 15 or so people living in a space meant for four?
Good luck.
This is an "Issue" that cuts across party lines, demographics, and everything else.
In addition, whatever the arguable social costs are ( and there are many, despite what apologists for Illegal Aliens claim )-- you simply cannot ignore the vast breech it causes in National Security when we are engaged in the fourth world war.
Months ago, Roger Hedgecock reported that besides the usual Arabic detritus being found along our borders by Homeland Security, they were finding Chinese trash as well.
WTH is coming over our borders?
( besides [see my links] mumps, antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis, and God-knows what else )
Just forking wonderful! They want to overthrow our government and the Muslims want to do the same. I see no win in sight. Does anyone else????
The following map is outdated. More Mosque's have moved in across the United States since this map was published. A lot of aliens coming across the borders are Islam and they head right for a Mosque for cover.
This scares me and I'm not afraid of 'nuthin!'
Your government will not defend you and will not defend the borders. The message to the invaders is that each individual American citizen is on their own to defend themselves and their property.
Lock and load - because that's the only way you're keeping your stuff.
