Chennai, April 1: A 22-foot-high bronze statue of Pope John Paul II will be unveiled in Chennai tomorrow. The statue, costing Rs 400,000, has been sculpted by Shihan Hussaini, eminent sculptor and karate expert.
The statue would be unveiled on the premises of the Sculpture Mission at Besant Nagar, Chennai, to coincide with the first death anniversary of St John Paul II, tomorrow.
Shihan said this would be an event of historical significance as this was the world's first statue of the Pope sculpted soon after his death. The statue was completed and mounted on a pedestal six days after his death, making it the world's first statue of the "people's Pope".
Sculptor Shihan, a post-graduate student of the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, who shot into fame with his theme statues of Kalpana Chawla, brigand Veerappan's capture and the jailed Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, says the statue is a personal tribute to the "miraculous powers of the Pope which saved his life on three occasions".
The composition, made with bronze, metal reinforced fibre and concrete, depicts the Pontiff standing on top of three large steps blessing the sculptor and the world with his right hand. In his left hand, he holds a large cross, carrying the globe on it. A dove is seen taking off from the globe.
There is another row of 26 small steps in between the three steps. The sculptor explains that the Pontiff had gone through two stages in his lifetime. In the first, he was Karol Wojteyela...in the second he was the Pope and now he stands at the third step, awaiting beatification as a saint, says Shihan.
The 26 steps stand for the number of years of his papacy and the dove on top of a globe represents the efforts he took to spread the concept of peace in the world through Christianity.
The statue will be on public display on the premises of the Sculpture Mission till a suitable place is allotted by the state government.
Shihan says he has made a representation to the state government to allot a place for the statue. (R Rangaraj)
Ping-a-ling!
The link is busy. Presumably, no pic of the statue until its unveiling tomorrow?
So, Shihan's a Shihan, huh?
Link is fine. I tried searching for pics, but no luck yet.
Bronze statue of Pope John Paul II to be unveiled on Sunday
Chennai: A 22-feet high bronze statue of Pope John Paul II, created by sculptor Shihan Hussaini, will be unveiled here on April two on the first death anniversary of the Pope.
Bearing the inscription 'The Third Step-St John Paul II', the statue, costing Rs four lakh, was completed and mounted on a pedestal six days after the Pope's death, a press release from the sculptor, who is also karate exponent, said here today.
http://www.newkerala.com/news2.php?action=fullnews&id=34914
Hussaini claimed that the statue was a personal tribute to the miraculous powers of the Pope, which saved his life on three occassions.
Stating that a representation would be made to the Tamil Nadu government to allot a suitable place for installing the statue, made of bronze, metal reinforced fibre and concrete, the press release said it would remain at the Sculpture Mission in the city till then.
I'm anxious to see a pic of it.
A fine tribute to him to mark the first anniversay of his death.
How much are you willing to bet that the "Religion of Pieces" will want this Muslim dead to making this statue?
A Muslim made a graven image of a Pope?
This cat is gonna get the Salman Rushdie treatment fo sho.
This shouldn't surprise anyone. Among his many public apostasies, JP2 is famous for kissing a Koran:
He also kissed the ground whenever he flew to a visit a country, not because he worshipped the dirt, but to show respect for the country.
The document Dominus Iesus, principally authored by then-Cardinal Ratzinger but authorized by the Pope and certainly expressing Pope John Paul's views, started that religions other than Christianity are "gravely deficient" and their rituals can constitute "an obstacle to salvation" for their followers.
Pope John Paul II has been criticized for the way in which he showed love and respect for all, but to accuse him of apostasy is a despicable distortion.
Looks that way!
Rob
There were no public apostasies by a man whose entire life was marked by a deep devotion to Christ and His Mother.
