Policy, security & illegals By Salena Zito TRIBUNE-REVIEW Sunday, April 2, 2006
Brace yourselves, folks.
The single most defining domestic issue for the midterm elections and beyond -- immigration reform -- is up for political debate and it won't be pretty.
Left in the cold is the average American, who just wants to know the doors to his country are locked when he goes to bed.

I know. I was being facetious.
Just pay what the jobs are actually worth. Americans will do anything (and I do mean anything) if the price is right.
I believe that, but if some people have their way cheap labor will continue to be imported.
Please call them INVADERS and don't compare them to people who are legal aliens!
IF you aid and abet CRIMINALS, you are a criminal!
President Bush has been great on most things except for our border.
He has been great on the war on terrorists.
But on the border he is a gross failure.
He acted fast and correct on the 3,000+ people murdered at the world trade center.
He ignores the many rapes, murders and robberies which might be larger than the murders and money loss at the world trade center.
More Americans are abducted on the border of Mexico than in Iraq!
Start building the fence.
It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas and Invaders.
I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.
Enjoy 4-8 years of Hitlery, and know that YOU helped make it happen.
Cheers.
LOL! You trolls are so transparent.
hey ! Dane's back !
On one side my Grandparents came over on the boat in the early 1900's, on the other side I think it goes back to the 1600's.
Give your strawman arguments a rest.
Give your strawman arguments a rest.
Have no idea, but it probably is less than the # of katrina evacuaees who refuse to go back and rebuild their city, even though the jobs are good paying.
I think you're leaving out the part that most folks object to. Immigration is not what so many are against as your post connotes.
The politicians in DC have put the cart before the horse so many times, they forgot which horse is pulling the wagon.
Care to make a wager?
No, the majority of Katrian evacuaees aren't going all the way back to New Oreleans to try a rebuild what they had there. And who can possibly blame them..??? I wouldn't either, and even an idiot could see why.
The environmental issues alone make the prospect of returning to re-establish residency there a high risk proposition. Most of the disaster area remains toxic cesspool, with the EPA struggling to do what it can to make some sort of headway. All sorts of environmental clean-up regulations have been waived just so they clean out part of the garbage and debris. This will be biggest, most difficult and costliest undertaking in the EPA's history.
Tell me, if you were a parent that had lived in the city prior to the disaster, would you actually move back there just so your kids could grow up in an area as contaminated as it is now...? I sure as hell wouldn't risk the health of my kids.
Once more there is probably at least a one in three chance of a comparable storm hitting the area again within the next ten to fifteen years. What's the point of trying to move back to try and rebuild if another Katrian-style disaster is going to strike again?
Here's one more financial incentive not to move back: can you imagine what the new flood/disaster insurance premiums are going to be like for homes and businesses(in the post-Katrina era) that try to rebuild in N.O. ??
These former residents have obviously exercised prudent judgement in trying to establish their new live elsewhere and don't need anyone, including you, second guessing their decisions. Personally I think they have suffered enough without some imbecile trying to accuse them of "laziness".
On what, that you are a troll or that hillary will win in 08?
I'll take both, since hillary may not even get the nomination in 08.
Fine they don't have to move back, but why should the taxpayers have to pay for their staying on welfare and or new house somewhere else.
I see...welfare is only for immigrants....
So you are ok with Katrina evacuees living off the govt. teet.
Me, I'm for trying to make sure nobody(immigrants and native born alike) makes a "living" off welfare.
It has been SOP for the government to help residents who lost everything in anatural disaster. It would be foolish to suddenly stope now with regards to worst natural disaster of our generation. If the public levees had actually been built correctly in the first place (able to withstand above a Category 3 hurricane) it would have been a different story. So in one respect, the "State" let the public down. Or so one could say. Not necessarily my opinion...but I think that argument can be made.
