(AP) A woman whose three pit bulls fatally mauled an 82-year-old neighbor as she walked a small dog was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison.

Deanna Large, 37, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in December for the death of Dorothy Sullivan, who was attacked by the roaming dogs last March.

Sullivan had been walking her Shih Tzu, Buttons, in her front yard in Partlow when the dogs attacked and killed both.

This is so sad, and the deaths could so easily have been prevented. Ever since I've learned about Cesar Millan (the Dog Whisperer), I've become convinced that any dog can be trained to behave well. The problem is always with the owner.

No, I don't think 3 years is enough, myself.

No, given that she was a chronic offender who had had pits taken away before. 10 yrs would be better and chip her so that if she is ever caught owning/breeding pits she goes right back to jail.

"Sullivan's death sparked outrage in her rural community, where residents said they had long been terrorized by aggressive, roaming dogs."

Rural VA, and people were long terrorized by roaming dogs? Someone should have just shot them. I'm surprized they weren't.

She should have gotten way more than three years.

She had at one time 13 Pit Bulls in her trailer.

Three years was not long enough. She should have gotten 20 years. Imagine the fear, pain and suffering that 82 year old woman went thru. It is and outrage.

Roaming dogs are shot here, we have enough problems with coyotes, we sure don't need uncontrolled domestic dogs.

That's amazing. A young woman in Florida just received 30 days jail for running over and killing two little girls in a crosswalk, after running a red light.

Are you smokin' something? These dogs have been bred for centuries to cause mayhem. It's in their damned genes. I know three people who have been attacked by pityless bulls. One by his own dog, a real sweetheart until for no reason, she snapped! Luckily Doug was on the phone when it happened, and his friend called the police. He managed to kill the animal with a softball bat, and pry it off his thigh. He lost so much blood, that, if his friend hadn't summoned help, he would have died. 82 stitches. They're a bred menace.

Easy Doc...These Pit Bull owners are dog lovers. Dog lovers who happened to buy a dog designed for killing other dogs.

Oh my God. Were there ANY extenuating circumstances??? Like maybe the driver was having an epileptic attack? Otherwise, I hope Bill O'Reilly picks up on it. Was it a jury verdict? Surely not--I suspect a liberal judge. Red meat for O'Reilly.

On my daily walk, I met up with a nice man who had a dalmatian pitbull cross. I asked if she was friendly? Oh, yes! Does she bite? Oh, no! I leaned over to scratch the ears and was treated to the dog's wide-mouthed, pitbull teeth. Luckily, the nice man pulled the dog back before she could latch on. "She's never done that before." Yeah, right! I have no sympathy for any excuse any dog owner gives. You can bet that nice man had seen his sweet dog's snarl before. Major denial.

Are you smokin' something? No, but if you're offering... ;)

All I can say is watch "The Dog Whisperer". It's on the National Geographic Channel on Friday nights. I used to think owning pit bulls (and rottweilers) should just be illegal, but now I know any dog can be made docile and obedient. It's all about the owner and proper training.

I may sound crazy to you, but would you give the show a try and then tell me what you think? By the way, I'm not a dog apologist. I don't even like dogs. I wouldn't have thought anyone could convince me that those dogs aren't a menance. But Cesar did. I'm a sucker for proof!

And since I know it's all about the owner, I think the owner of the dogs who killed that poor lady should get a lot more than 3 years.
