It's a new chapter in the Promised Land. We are becoming The Land That Better Keep Its Promises - or Else. Even promises that never were made.
A half-million illegal aliens and friends and sympathizers have taken to the streets of late, demanding unhampered residency and employment. Their anger is being whipped up against an America that would fence its borders against more coming over, and require proper payroll-keeping and taxpaying from employers who hire them outside the law.
Why? In part because a new myth is gaining currency. It is that illegal immigrants, mostly of Mexican or other Hispanic origin, "built this country." Without them the economy would collapse.
"We are the motor of this nation!" a speaker harangued the 500,000 who marched in Los Angeles on Saturday. "We construct your schools! We cook your food!" Other thousands marched to this beat of indispensability in Phoenix, Denver and Milwaukee.
That people who entered the United States by stealth feel entitled to tie up U.S. downtowns with their grievances is nervy in the first place. But their slant on U.S. history is off the wall. No better clue might be needed that kids should be taught in English, fast!
It was religious freedom-seekers from England who began building this country, followed by natives of every part of Europe, Asia and Africa. And their descendants keep right on building it as e pluribus unum Americans -- "out of the many, one." Don't expect them to honor some dubious economic necessity to let everybody in.

Marking.
When did you Todd become APFel, per reply #157?
The simple fact of the matter is, due to the physical nature of thee work, these types of jobs have at most a 5 year cycle. That's why in the 'olden' days (pre-illegals), people between 18-25 were to be found toiling away outside in the hot sun. (Also why you could suck down a six-pack at the end of the day without gaining any weight.)
Illegals are not supermen - they also get burnt out and can no longer work the same jobs as they age. They themselves are trapped because younger illegals coming over the border displace them in the next cycle. But since they have no other marketable skills, don't know the language, etc, they can't move up the value chain. Instead, they become a drag on the economy as they consume increased social services.
What we have no is very similar to Dickensian England, where absent child labor laws, business owners just cycled through each generation of youngsters. Take a look at the political rationale behind banning child labor - business owners were foisting their broken employees on the backs of society, just as they are doing today with illegals.
It depends on the work. In my state illegals working in construction make between $12 and $20 per hour--a competitive wage. Their employers come off fat because they can shove the external costs of the labor onto taxpayers.
The illegals put their kids into the public schools at no cost to them, and they use the hospitals and clinics for free or heavily subsidized medical care. They may live in cramped conditions, but are still far better off than they would be in Mexico. Compared to how they were living in the corrupt socialist hellhole they came from, they are in living in paradise here.
Still, when their position is finally secure (amnesty) you can expect them to demand with a vengeance that they be paid what fully legal residents would get paid, complete with benefits. Employers will just hire new undocumented illegal aliens to perform the work that the "legal" amnestos are demanding to be paid higher wages for. Then we'll not only be stuck with the amnestos, but with a new subculture of Mexican workers. Meanwhile all the children of the amnestos will remain to become a permanent part of the socialist left.
That was a time now called BO(Before Oprah).
And you know this how?
You don't run a real business do you, but pretend you do on FR, IMO.
Speaking of reality, let's talk about your free energy 30 million illegal alien vegetable picking machine. How does that work again?
I did not. I entered the thread late and wonder what teachers unions and lawyers had to do with illegals. I guess nothing.
Uh you still haven't acknowledged the reality of unions or trial lawyers.
They do, but given these threads, it's almost true tin foil with the rhetoric that gets thrown around.
That is what IW was saying earlier in this thread.
Sheesh can't you just admit that teacher unions and trial lawyers exist.
Just watch the commercials during the jerry springer show.
Good one!! I wonder if the reason why Willie and his posse are so grumpy is that they're constipated? They can't eat American produce (picked by foreigners) or foreign produce (picked by foreigners, giving foreigners profits).
Why do you never rant about the evils of Mexico that force your beloved little peons to risk their precious lives coming to the land of gringos in needs of cheap lettuce and lawn care.
I have many times on FR, but some loudmouths would rather focus on people named Jose doing such "evil" things such as mowing lawns, building buildings, or pick vegeatbles as their focus on what is wrong.
They were talking rickshaws, and he responds "Potato salad!"
Here we're talking about your great free energy 30 million illegal alien vegetable picking machine and you respond "Trial attorneys!"
Why you don't drag out your old standby argument, the racist strawman and kick it around the room for awhile? It at least has the virtue of being based on flawed logic rather than no logic.
