Georgia takes a stand

By Dimitri Vassilaros

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Friday, March 31, 2006

God bless Georgia.

Its state government is ready, willing and able to do about illegal immigration what the federal government is not ready, not willing and probably not capable of doing -- defending America and rejecting an unconditional surrender to Mexico.

Both chambers of Georgia's General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a bill that attacks illegal immigration and hopefully inspires 49 other states to do likewise. It needs only the governor's signature to make it official, no doubt before the inevitable court challenges that, for all we know, might be paid for by the Mexican government.

The illegals in Georgia -- maybe there are 250,000 or maybe 800,000 or maybe more, maybe much more, whatever -- will be prohibited from using many taxpayer-funded services.

Those wanting to feed at the public trough will have to prove they are Americans or in this country legally. But illegals still will have access to emergency health care, prenatal care and K-12 and higher education. That's too generous by half. But at least it's a step in the right direction. (That would be southwest to Mexico.)

Companies hoping for government contracts will be forced to verify the legal status of everyone on the payroll.

Business owners who hire illegals will not get income tax write-offs for illegal workers who are paid more than $600 annually.

The bill also increases penalties for human trafficking, requires law enforcement to verify the legal status of arrested suspects and makes life more challenging for people claiming to be lawyers who supposedly can get the proper documents for illegals so they can be hired legally.

And it demands that businesses withhold a 6 percent income tax from contract workers who do not have a taxpayer identification number or Social..

I included Viet Nam Era Vets for our Brothers and Sisters
who served during war time but were no assigned to combat zones.

Fact is many of them were under just as much danger as those who were in theater.

Many, not assigned, actually make it a point to refer to themselves as
Viet Nam Era Vets because they don't want to be like so many phonies out there.

In my book they are the same as anyone who was there.

That song always makes me cry. I always have Georgia on my mind because my two beautiful granddaughters ( My Georgia Peaches) live there. I try and visit as much as possible.

Of course it doesn't mention that the first stages of this bill won't go into effect for a year or that the huge hispanic contingent is planning suits that will undoubtedly tie this up in the courts for years."

In other words, they've really done nothing but posture.

You make my point, it's the term that is lousy.

It makes more sense to just say either "I'm a veteran" or "I'm a Viet Nam veteran".

Both are equally deserving of respect.

Ask any Veteran
what they think of the "plan" to reward
illegal "guest workers"
with a "path" to citizenship.

I'll change it to this.

Either way the Vets are about 97 % against
from what I've seen on FR

Alabama has a real zinger working it's way through the legislative branches, it includes felony charges for employers and for the illegals who lie for several different categories.

Good news. I grew up in the South, and whenever I need a shot of sanity, I always head that way.

Ho ray for Georgia.

I think we should round up all the illegal aliens and put them to work building a massive stone wall across our southern border.

When its finished, we can put them to work digging an immense moat on the southern side of that border. Then we will have solved two problems at once.

And I think we should send a bunch of good ole boy sheriff's officers from states that are still American - like Georgia - down there to supervise them.

Practically every single poll I've seen runs about 90% against, 10% for on a variety of topics regarding guest workers, amnesty, etc. The people have spoken, and with a unified voice and clarity that is rarely found in politics. President Bush, John McCain, and Ted Kennedy are on the wrong side of those numbers.

Wouldn't it be a bit of historic irony if the lands of the confederacy end up being the last stand of the union?

It's a great start. Round 2 will be the inevitable court battles, though.

Either of you willing to trade us for Kucinich and Cleveland?

I'll see your Kucinich and Cleveland, and raise you, one Pelosi and San Francisco (I'm ashamed to admit I live here)

This will spread over the country. It will paint a bright red line around the rat controlled states that will undoubtedly do nothing of this sort. It will go to the Supreme Court as a 10th Amendment issue and we will win.

This will hurt the rat in November. He will find out that Hispanics are NOT monolithic voters and illegal aliens can vote because of HAVA. ( yes some will vote but in NOwhere near the numbers the rat will need ).

They also voted to attach a 5% surcharge on all wired money out of the country unless you can prove to be a legal resident or citizen. The surcharge is to help reimburse the state for services used by illegals.

By this law, Georgia will encourage illegal aliens to go to Massachusetts!

The Bishops in Georgia are urging the Catholics to oppose this legislation but the Catholics in Georgia are responding to the Bishops with the same under the chin gesture that Justice Antonin Scalia gave the press in Boston! The parishioners in my parish are sending a subtle message to the Archbishop and have been reducing their weekly collections which were down over 10% this week. The reduction in money to the Bishops is the only way that Bishops will ever listen to the flock!

Pretty good but room for improvement. A 6% with holding tax? I think the legal citizens here pay a minimum of 10%.
