Senators Give First OK To In-State Tuition For Children Of Illegal Aliens March 30, 2006
The children of illegal aliens would be allowed to pay in-state tuition at public colleges and universities under a bill given first-round approval Wednesday night by the Legislature.
Governor Dave Heineman previously indicated he was likely to veto the bill if it reached his desk. His veto would be brushed aside, however, if 30 lawmakers voted for an override. The bill passed with exactly 30 votes.
Senator Adrian Smith of Gering, a candidate for the GOP congressional nomination in the 3rd District, said the bill âencourages illegal immigration and undermines federal immigration policy.â
Proponents of the measure said it would encourage young immigrants to obtain citizenship, and to stay in Nebraska and contribute to the economy.
Nebraska would be the tenth state to adopt such a law.
To qualify for in-state tuition the students would have to live in Nebraska for at least three years, graduate from a Nebraska high school or obtain a GED, and sign affidavits swearing they would apply to be permanent legal residents of the U.S.
Senator DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln said one year of tuition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln costs residents some $4,530. For non-resident students, the bill is $13,440. Schimek is chief sponsor of the bill.
Meanwhile, some 150 high school students rallied in Omaha to protest changes in immigration policy being considered by Congress.
They marched from Omaha Central High School to Omahaâs old Federal building, bearing a petition for congressmen and senators.
So if I want my kid to go to college in another state...but want to pay in-state tuition...can I tell the kid to say she's illegal and has no papers? Sounds fair.
I bet they really feel good about this. They're oh so compassionate with other peoples money.
Next they will get preference over citizens tax payers better qualified children...
Maybe this is why old Ernie didn't filibuster the CCW bill; he knew this redistribution of wealth bill was on the agenda.... That's what I get for focusing on the one at the expense of the others. :(
IDIOTS!!
I suppose that the next thing that these nutless wonders will do is print out the United States Constitution on rolls of TOILET PAPER to hand out to these ANTI - AMERICA SCUM.
I believe federal law says they can't do this unless they offer the same lower tuition to all students. Of course, the law means nothing any more as several states have done this.
The scumbag politicians don't give a damn about what the American people want.I can't even begin to describe how pissed off I am at these traitors.
I'm in complete agreement with you on this.
Perhaps it's time that "We, The People" take back OUR Goverment.
The staus quo isn't getting it.
bump
This world is upside-down. Republicans care more about helping illegal aliens than they do about their own voters. Illegal aliens have more representation in state legislatures than conservatives do.
This is already being done in Kansas.
I can't believe this is happening!
So we know they are illegally here... they have to have lived here illegally for 3 years... they apply for admission...you know where they are ....send in the INS and deport their illegal behinds !!! Then build that stinking wall, shark-filled moat or whatever it takes and tighten the border.
Is it any wonder we have this problem, we offer endless services to illegals that our own citizens can't get and we can't figure out why they keep coming? Beam me up, Scotty (sorry I had to quote a convicted democratic congressman!)
It says right in the constitution that illegal immigrants do not have to pay for medical care or school tuition...get with it...at least that is what is interpreted to mean in light of its status as a living, breathing and malleable document, as interpreted by the law of other countries.

Traitors.
I guess I'm way behind the times ain't I?
If I was a student getten screwed like this I'd file a lawsuit.
