WASHINGTON - Setting aside political differences, the United States offered Iran temporary shelter to house up to 100,000 earthquake victims, the State Department said Friday.
The offer came after President Bush said in Cancun, Mexico, that the administration was willing to send assistance despite the differences with Iran's Islamic government on its nuclear program and other issues.
Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns telephoned Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said.
In addition to shelter, the offer includes blankets, plastic sheeting, hygienic goods and water units, Ereli said. As part of the package, $150,000 in cash assistance would be sent, to be distributed through private voluntary groups, Ereli said.

Thousands of people lost their homes So what. If there own gov't was less concerned about building weapons that they can use to destroy us, maybe they could take care of them.

Mr. President, Give me a break. We THOUGHT we elected a Republican in the mold of Reagan. Obviously not. Thanks for nothing.

The attitude of the priest and the Levite are well represented on this thread.

The Iranians are going to get us embroiled in a nuclear war if they can. Feeling sorry for the average citizen does not mean we spend our resources to support a country that quite clearly has called for our destruction.
Or perhaps we should have sent aid to Germany and Japan during WWII?

If their government won't rebuild them, why should we?

In the case of Japan we did indeed send them scrap iron before the war started.
It came back in the form of bombs.
Amazing how history repeats itself and we never learn.

Unless the Iranians are planning on recruiting MacGyver to build their weapons, I don't think we're gonna have to worry much about history reapeating itself in the form of bombs made out of blankets, plastic sheeting, hygienic goods and water units.

I understand your point but:
Iran is an enemy of ours.
Sending anything to them seems to me to be aiding and comforting our enemy.
No telling how much money Jorge is going to spend on this but betcha it would buy more than a few miles of border fencing.

Point taken.
Iran is a very rich oil rich country.
I wonder how much help they sent us to aid in hurricane recovery?

I personally will match Osama bin Laden's contribution to the emergency relief of his Muslim brothers. I only have $50, but that's $50 more than I will need.

The Iranian government is our enemy. The Iranian people are not. What makes you think the vast majority of the people don't support their gov'r?

The aid won't get to the average citizen.
