CA: McClintock and Morrow protest Kaloogian using photos, quotes

State Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, wants to clear up something: He did not endorse former state Assemblyman Howard Kaloogian of San Marcos for the 50th Congressional District race.

Kaloogian mailers have gone to Republican households containing a picture of McClintock with quotes from the popular conservative saying nice things about Kaloogian. McClintock, who is running for lieutenant governor, protested yesterday that those quotes were from two years ago when he endorsed Kaloogian for U.S. Senate.

McClintock said because of his high regard for state Sen. Bill Morrow – who also is running for the 50th Congressional District seat – he is not making an endorsement in the race.

For his part, Kaloogian points out that the mailer doesn't actually say McClintock is endorsing him for this race. McClintock's picture and quote run under a headline: “Respected by conservative leaders.” Others under that headline, like Steve Forbes, have given their endorsement and it says so. McClintock wasn't the only one irked by Kaloogian's use of other candidates. Morrow also wasn't happy.

“Howard Kaloogian's campaign Web site includes a picture and a quote from me from 2001 that implies that I have endorsed his candidacy for Congress,” Morrow, R-Carlsbad, said in a press release. “Howard knows that I have not endorsed his candidacy, and that I am running for the same congressional seat.”

Morrow called for Kaloogian to take his photo off the site.

Bill Morrow & Eric Roach for starters. Both of their platforms are across-the-board conservative. If Morrow WEREN'T a solid conservative, Kaloogian wouldn't be using him in testimonials to make it look like he's endorsing Kaloogian.

I don't know enough about Bill Boyer, Richard Earnest, Milton Gale, Bill Hauf, Delecia Holt, Jeff Newsome, Scott Orren, Victor Ramirez, Scott Turner, and Alan Uke to form an opinion but that list alone shows there a TON of good Republican candidates to choose from, unlike the Senate race where the list was limited to three. I doubt any of them are Rosario Marin clones. I think even Bilbray is to the right of Marin (although he's obviously NOT a solid conservative)

Are you one of those "ANYONE who doesn't back MY candidate in the primary is a RINO" purists? If so, McClintock must be on your list of "RINOs" now. Just because Howard Kaloogian is a staunch conservative, it doesn't mean every Republican in the state HAS to support him any ANYONE ELSE running with an "R" next to their name is a "RINO"

We'll see who wins and who walks soon enough... and then can wear whatever label you wish to stick on 'em.

You out there working for someone by chance or are these all just remote observations? I see you're from Illini land. Good luck with that mess!

I'm a Minnesota native, here in California nigh 30 years now.

Some folks consider New Majority Republicans conservative too. How about you?

How big a tent do they use to try and build a big tent party in Illinois? It's a flop so far here in California.

You're not just another moderate weinie at FR, are ya? we got enough of them already.

btw.. What's the verdict on George Ryan? jury still out?

Have a good one.
