F-16 goes down in Great Salt Lake, pilot safe

An F-16 fighter jet piloted out of Hill Air Force Base crashed in Carrington Bay in the Great Salt Lake Thursday afternoon.

Base officials said the jet, from the 388th Fighter Wing's 421st Fighter Squadron, went down at 2:11 p.m., approximately 30 miles west of Hill Air Force Base. The pilot is said to have ejected safely, though was reportedly taken to a local hospital.

Public safety officials reported that the plane came down in Carrington Bay, in the Great Salt Lake.

The aircraft was conducting a close-air support training mission over the northern Utah Test and Training Range.

An emergency response team from Hill Air Force Base will respond to the crash location and a board of officers will investigate the causes of the crash, the Air Force reported.

The crash was at least the second involving a U.S. Air Force Fighting Falcon this month. U.S. Navy divers Wednesday were searching the ocean floor, about 25 miles off South Korea's west coast, in a bid to recover a F-16 that crashed there March 14, according to Stars and Stripes. That pilot also safely ejected.

The F-16, a single-seat fighter aircraft, is capable of flying more than 1550 miles per hour and can make turns withstanding up to nine times the force of gravity.

I'm glad he got out OK and I hope he fully recovers.

"U.S. Navy divers Wednesday were searching the ocean floor, about 25 miles off South Korea's west coast, in a bid to recover a F-16"

They don't want any DPRK divers picking through the comm gear and electronics.

Initial reports indicate an engine problem:

F-16 Fighter Crashes Near Great Salt Lake

March 30th, 2006 @ 5:54pm

(KSL News) -- Hill Air Force Base has confirmed the crash of one of its F-16s.

Jim Post, Vice Commander 388th Fighter Wing says the pilot is now back at Hill, undergoing a thorough physical examination, but he did walk away from the accident.

The jet was part of a four plane training mission. Towards the end of the mission, the pilot reported some sort of engine anomaly before crashing just after 2:00 this afternoon.

The jet went down this afternoon in Tooele County, somewhere between Carrington Island and the western shore of the Great Salt Lake. Commander Post says the plane went down in an area on the edge of water and land, where the tide comes and goes.

The F-16 single seater fighter jet is assigned to Hill's 388th fighter wing's 421st fighter squadron.

Post says pilots are trained to eject a plane if they determine they are unable to maintain an altitude of 2,000 feet. It is unknown at this time if that was the case in this situation.

The military has closed a large area to investigate and Hill Air Force will temporarily stand down as part of the investigation.

The identity of the pilot has not yet been revealed.

I think your picture is upside-down.

You're right, I was in a 4G inverted dive with a Mig-28 at the time.

No, as far as I know, civilians aren't allowed to buy F-16s.

Nah...you really don't do much acrobatics such as upside-down when you're packing heat on the wings...

Of course that salt water is so dense and corrosive, the plane wouldn't sink but before rescuers can reach it it will have corroded into a pile of dust.

The sun is on the wrong side of the plane, or so it appears.

LOL, I questioned the 'my personal' part, but I didn't know if those in the AF have their 'own' jet.

I was assigned to the 388th from 1979 through 1983. We lost 33 aircraft in the first 36 months, kinda brings back memories.
